What happens to my Add-on Domains if I sell off my Main Domain?

Hi,

I have been considering selling one of my websites, but it happens to be the main domain on my hosting account. (I use Hostgator.)

I have added all my other websites as Add-on domains, using the Baby Plan. So I have just been wondering if it is possible to sell the main domain, and what would happen to all the add-on domains?

Thanks for your help -
Ruth

  • You can make one of your add-on domains your main domain.

Agreed - very easy to do. Just get in touch with HG support and ask them to switch your main domain.

I've done this before (wasn't selling off the main domain - just realized I didn't want it as the main one) with zero issues.

HostGator is very patient and helpful. I think you have good advice above.

Nothing. Your add-on domains will still be there.

I once had a main domain name for a web hosting account expire. I can no longer FTP transfer the files through the main domain, but FTPing through any of the add-on domains still works.

Does Hostgator charge a fee for changing the main domain name?

They didn't charge me for it.

You would need to contact Hostgator and get one of the add on domains assigned as your main domain. Then you would need to transfer that domain to the new owner along with the site. Transferring the domain is not as straightforward when it's with the hosting company, so use support to get that done.

As for the site, I've got a guide here
