Can you build a list for any niche?

Hi Warriors,

Next year in April it will be my third year in IM. Only in the last 8 months have I started to see my monthly income rise from what was an almost regular $100/month to around $500/month.

Not great after two and half years I know but I have persisted.

Anyway, I know that "the money is in the list" and I feel that it's probably time I got one started in order to build my business to the next level.

My biggest earning website is the one I want to focus on for list building but I'm not sure it is a niche anyone would want to sign up for.

My niche is just an Amazon review site that features a variety of product models. It sells the same type of products but in different models and styles etc....that's it.

--------------------------------

Let's say my site was Amazon reviews of all variety of bookshelves...or...refrigerators...or whatever......why would anyone want to sign up to any of these email lists?

Ok, I know I could send out an email pointing out any product discounts available but is that enough?

I mean, if the product has been bought why would they want to stay on your list?.......they already have the product.....they don't want another.....right?

Thanks,

Andy

By the way....my site brings in around 300 unique visits a day. Is that enough for trying to build a list?

Id sa yes you can, and yes you should try and build a list in any niche.

Yours is more difficult.. sort of I think, jsut as it is different to most here who will be giving away an ebook.. but still possible... If I was you I would possibly even make something generic like a "daily deal of the day - save up to 90% off the biggest name brands"... and just send them offers... you could / should segment it based on what sites they signed up through actually and send them relevant offers...

But yes, the money IS in the list, and you definitely should build a list, any of my big affiliates are big because they have lists... it will pay you over and over and over if you can get people signed up, and making $500 a month off amazon you must have some significant traffic going through your sites so you definitely should be capturing them!

Reviews and discount codes may be affective but when people realize you're trying to get money from them your open rate will fall.

I send every email in two parts: one part with high value to the reader and one that converts well into profit. People will first find the value one and think "hey that guy is awesome" and will more likely buy from you.

Yes, this is very true, I do this too - free gift / value post , then an offer email to follow..

Again, this might be harder, can you really write an interesting, value post about fridges... not sure... maybe this could be in the form of a "buyers guide - 3 ESSENTIAL elements to look for in any fridge"... then you follow it with 3 recommendations...

Yes. you can of course you can . Whether they are buying physical products or digital products . It doesn't really matter . Find out what they really desire . What are they moving towards or far away from . If you understand the emotional drive leading them to part with cash , then you can make even money money because you understand and you know how best to serve them .

My suggestion ? You can do a guide for your specific niche e.g layman guide to techie stuff and ask fro them to opt-i n to receive .

300 visitors a day is good . If you have 10% conversion , 30 leads a day, in amonth you would have a 1000 subscribers you can build a relationship with

You can't start using any niche, maybe some have 0 traffic, so all the hard work you make is for nothing. You have to analyze first to check for global/local searches first, to see if it's worth working. Also if competition is too hard to take down, what you'll do if you'll be in page 1000 ?

So I need to look at the niche and try to see things from the customer's / reader's perspective to figure out what else could interest them.

      Thanks,

It is, in fact, possible to market SOMETHING to any niche at all. Let's say you have someone who buys a bookshelf from you.

Do you suppose that person might have, I don't know, lots of books?

I wonder if Amazon sells books. Someone should check that.

Your list probably doesn't want to buy the same thing over and over, but what they bought from you might give you a clue what they want to buy next.

Yes, this makes a lot of sense.
I guess the trick is in the way that the emails are created and sent. I know there is a technique to it so as not to seem as though all you want is their cash.

      Thanks,

Ha! I even heard they sell ebooks, too. Man! How about selling virtual bookshelves!?!

That's what I forget sometimes, as I tend to think like the OP that what we market to a list has to be something like the very thing they bought in the first place. Maybe it's a right brain, creative thinking thing and I'm using the other half.

It's that forward thinking, thinking outside the box that gets marketers a unique place in the internet space.

It's not enough to want it... you have to want it enough.

    Thanks for the input guys.
It does seem a little trickier to create an email list when your website is a product review site.

I mean, you can offer value with your reviews but other than that what else can you offer them in your emails? Doesn't look like much else. Customer goes to your site, reads the product review, buys it......and goodbye. They don't need any emails sent to them as they just bought the product.

Most email marketing I see seem to be connected to a niche where information or advice is offered such as IM or fitness or wieght loss etc... With these you have plenty to write about and lots of advice and products to offer over time.

Is there anyone out there who has a specific product review site, (like an Amazon review site), and who has an opt in for collecting emails?
I would be interested to know if it works.

Because by signing up to your list they get sent your special free report - available nowhere else - called "The 4 Classic Mistakes of Buying Refrigerators And How To Avoid Them".

Because you also have coming up, soon, "The 4 Classic Mistakes of Buying Dishwashers/Ovens/Tumble-Drying Machines" and so on ... and many of the people who just bought a new refrigerator will be wanting one of those (or whatever) some time over the next year.

Yes, this is what I was thinking of doing but my niche is....well....pretty boring so I figured why would anyone want to know more...lol.

I think this is probably the way to go. My niche is in a way connected to security so maybe I could delve into that area for advice and informational emails.

      Thanks

Andy, two words -- GO BROAD.

I don't know what you're promoting, and it doesn't matter, really.

Think from the point of view of the buyers of your promotions.

What do people who buy a refrigerator have in common?

They have a home for one thing. And people who have a home need other stuff, lots of stuff.

Tip: your list members aren't on your list to buy stuff. They can buy stuff anywhere. They're on your list to be informed, and entertained.

For example, I'm on AppSumo's list because it's entertaining: All your software in one nice little burrito | AppSumo.com

Ditto for another favorite list, Hungry Girl -- Hungry Girl

Go broad... then think fun, and entertainment, and go ahead and create your list.

Another tip: if your first list is a dud, try again. And again... :-)

Angela is spot on there Broad is certainly the way to go. I'm sure that you can find related relevant news to collate to your list even using google to get told of when news/blog posts of your niche>

Also as Angela says don't make the mistake of just selling to your list. Be there as a buddy and informer, you'll do a lot better that way
