Agree or Disagree: The More You Learn The More You Earn

I thought of a quote the other day

"The More You Learn The More You Earn" - Ryan McLean
I want to know if you guys think this is true or not

Sometimes. I learn through doing and that means more money. Sitting around learning all day doesn't do much.

    The quote should read:

"The more you take action on what you learn, the more you earn"

You can learn all day long and not do anything with the knowledge.

      very true!!

Note that "learning" does not equal "make money".

For me as a software developer this is a BIG trap, not only in regards to "learning", but also in a more general sense.

The trap is that there is a danger to spend TOO MUCH being involved in projects, learning, improving...while the actual MARKETING part is falling behind.

In other words: I could spend the next two months now "learning" more in regards to programming (which PER SE is not such a bad thing)...but not realizing that the time spent is actually not making any money.

There were many SUPER SIMPLE efforts made by people who made insane amount of money with VERY simple things, without being involved in a complex "learning phase".

      Example:
Instead of spending 5 months learning to design web-pages or learning HTML you could just GO right now and make squidoo lenses with overall the same result.

It is true that MANY things in marketing require "learning", but the experience should come automatically and NEVER at the expense of postponing all ACTION.

You can spend a lot of time on studying IM courses and lessons, buy this and that "marketing program" and learn this or that method...and you spend 5 months "learning" and did not make ONE penny.

Similar to reading a book about "How to move and live in Hawaii".....but if you seriously want to move and live there it requires a bit more than just reading the book.

Taking the wrong action usually doesnt lead to making money.

'learning' has to be tempered with action. You can read a book about flying a plane, but if all you ever do is read book after book, you still dont know how to fly a plane, just read a book.

Its like swimming, i can tell you how to swim, you can see movies how to swim, you can spend months studdying swimming techniques. But until you get your butt wet, you wont know how to swim.

I like how you said you have to get your butt wet to learn. That is so true.
You need to learn the techniques first then give them a try so you can master then yourself.

Learning takes time and trial and error and should not be rushed

I think it depedns on how you learn. If you are just told how to do something, you may learn it but never put it to the test. If you are working at something and learn new tricks or better ways to do things because of what your doing then it will make you more money.

Not only do you learn it that way but you remember much better that way. That show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" proves that just because you learn something, doesn't mean its going to stick with you.

There is an obvious association but no cause and effect. Knowing more stuff means nothing unless you take action. Too often I spend a lot of time reading and learning new stuff when I should be taking action on things I already know. At least that's what I plan to do this year. If you're talking about how to defuse a bomb, then I agree with you...
But we're talking about making money, so I disagree:

In know people who stumbled into creating successful Internet business without knowing much, a lot of it was luck. (Ignorant Action)

But "Lazy Knowledge" is guaranteed to get you nowhere, because without taking action it's not possible, so for making money, I believe Ignorant Action wins if those are the only two options.

I think you need to have a balance. Neither the lazy genius or the hardworking retard would be effective.

I think if a person is learning too much, he suffers from analysis paralysis.

Compare that to a person who knows just one thing and keeps doing it and keeps earning more and more. On the other hand, if this same person was doing the wrong thing, then he would have lost money.

So,we could just say that know what works and keep doing it.

I totally agree that "action" is the most important piece of the pie. I, for one, have spent entirely too much time "learning" and not "doing". That changed when I came here to the WF.

There is another piece of the pie that we sometimes forget:

"If its worth doing, its worth doing poorly". - Keith Cunningham, one of the super rich.

I know, that sounds strange, but think back to when you rode a bicycle for the first time. Your "actions" were not enough to succeed. You also needed to learn from failure to ride that bike.

In fact, I'd take that another step further - if you don't fail on your first attempt, you haven't really learned it. Dumb luck can be more brutal than an early failure.

    I believe in this...

If you learn more and have enough focus then take the right action, you will earn more.

But if you learn more but do not take action, you will always pay more.

Don't forget to "FOCUS" <- For me, this is more important than learn more.
    F = Follow
    O = One
    C = Course
    U = Until
    S = Success

After you've succeeded with current course, then just learn more on another course to earn more.

Not much I can add but my spin on it is this: Many newcomers spend way too much time trying to learn and absorb all the information they can find related to Internet Marketing. That of course results in information overload and confusion. Many people are then too intimidated to take action and so they continue to learn even more.

IMHO it is probably best to learn the basic steps to any method or model and then put them into action. Mistakes create valuable learning experiences. As time goes on learning will continue - learning while taking action is key to earning.

Most of what you learn, you easily forget. So it's important to use what you've learned (or at least re-read them many times) so they get stuck in your memory for later use... even if it means cutting down on all the stuffs you're learning.

I like what you said about learning being a means to an end. Learning is the means to take action. Without learning you cannot take correct action.
So learn and take action and you will be successful.

I like this point a lot. Learning from people who are already successful increases your chances of success. Learning from someone who knows head knowledge, but not action knowledge is not as good.

You learn more by taking action and doing things then you do by studying in a classroom (or on your computer)

      Rachel has this right.

It doesn't take a heap of learning to make a heap of earning. You just need a winning system and the determination to apply it.

However, if you're a lifelong learner, you already know that knowledge is its own reward.

No this simply isn't true and it's really obvious that it's not true if you just look around at the people who are earning the most.

Now I'm not saying knowledge isn't valuable...it is in fact incredibly valuable.

And I'm certainly not saying that you shouldn't continue to gather more knowledge that can help you in your pursuits.

But the reality is THE MORE YOU TAKE ACTION ON THE KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE THE MORE YOU EARN.

Learning or the knowledge in itself can't and won't make you money.

You must put your knowledge into action if you want results.

There are many people on this forum and in life who have plenty of very useful knowledge but they never take serious action on anything.

Look at the number of university graduates who earn little or nothing.

And yet look at the number of high school dropouts who are millionaires.

Taking action on the right knowledge is the key to earning.

Or to put it another way...if you want to make a certain amount of money you need to take action that can conceivably get you that amount of money.

Anything else is just kidding yourself.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

And I did actually say that, and I thought it was implicit in the OP since he didn't specify action. Of course action has to be taken, but all other things being equal, someone with a better education is more likely to make a better income.

There are heaps of studies that correlate level of education with income, not just individually, but socially. Social units (nations, towns, and families) with a high average education also tend to have higher average incomes and/or standards of living.

I'm not sure I understand what this means exactly... Could you clarify a bit please? Thanks

Learning is the easy part. In this country we have a lot of smart educated people, but all of them don't earn large sums of money. So, the correct statement is the more you learn to relax while you work, the more you will earn.

It has been my experience to stay calm in this business is the best way to move forward. Everything else will cause stress.

            Jimmy.

Not convinced. Heard of "paralysis of analysis"? I soeasily fall into the trap of "the grass (and the dollars) are greener on the other side of the fence aka new coursem ebook, product, whatever."

Maybe it's a case of the more you acknowledge what you've learned, the more you earn?

    It's absolutely true.

It's been proven that the better someones education, the more likely they are to earn a higher income.

While actioning what you've learned is important, it's only a factor (and not actually the question. Action is assumed.) Of two people taking action, the one with more learning is more likely to earn more.

I agree that the more you learn the more you could earn if you put some action to what you have learned. Many people seem to learn and then learn some more and never do anything with it. As I am learning this business I have to make myself do something with what I have learned and not wait until I learn even more.

      I would say not necessarily.

Sometimes it is better not to know too much because when you do you tend not to focus on one thing at a time and so you find that your profits also decline in the process.

On the other hand it you are focus and put what you learn to use then I would say yes and you learn more you earn more.

Hey this is an awesome idea. It is so true. The more you take action and earn money the more you learn

But I don't think winning the lotto will teach you a lot. This quote is flawed, but the idea behind it is awesome.

This is so very true. You learn from your mistakes and when you learn from it you don't make the same mistake so you earn more money. Because in learning you understood your work then it is easy for you to earn money more.

Through observation I have often seen the opposite to be true. I know of some very knowledgeable people that are addicted to learning and they never take action. On the flip side, I do believe that you should apply yourself to learning prior to setting out but there seems to be a healthy balance.

It's always good to learn but if you just learn something and do absolutely nothing with it, what good is it? As many have said above...take action on what you learn and you'll do fine!

Another thing is don't try to take action on everything at once, stay focused on one thing at a time then go to the next when you are successful at the one thing you have focused on.

Staying focused on one thing at a time is a great way to do it. Learn one way and then outwork it so you really know how to put it into action, then move onto the next. I wrote a thread about this early this year

Because the best way to learn is from personal experience and because we're talking about learning how to build a business the quotation "The More You Learn The More You Earn" is correct.

I wouldn't trade all the things I've learned both intellectually and from experience (because one influences the other) for all the tea in China. For me taking action is equally important as gathering sufficient knowledge and educating myself. There's no point taking massive steps if your ladder is learning against the wrong wall.

    Howdy Ryanmacca,

I agree if the following is added... If what you learn is something others are willing to pay for, you take action and apply your knowledge, and you have an effective means of delivery.

You should learn things that others are willing to pay for. Then charge them to teach them about it.

Learn, do, learn from mistakes, do again, learn what works, do more of it!

So yes it does help, but taking action is the ultimate learning tool.

Well you have to learn before you can earn, but you can learn all day and as a result get nothing done so earn little to nothing.

Yet you could learn the basics things that work, then work at them all day long, and earn a lot.

Although the statement could be said to be true, not as true as "The more you work, the more you earn".

In the case of say, an anesthesiologist, I'd agree. But it's more contingent on action than knowledge.

Getting "lucky" means you were in a lot of places to be in the "right place at the right time". That takes work.

"He who loves practice without theory is like the sailor who boards ship without a rudder and compass and never knows where he may cast."
      "Leonardo Da Vinci"

Much on my day is invested in 'learning', though my focus on learning is in the 'understanding' part and that involves practice.

What I do personally is first I read all I can about a subject, creating associations inside my head, making sense of it all, the big picture.

I continuously examine what are the key factors for success in the chosen area and according to my Definite Chief Aim I focus on the ones that make a natural fit with me, the one's that 'feel' fine.

Then it all falls into place, without wondering 'Am I missing something' and I get to a point where I can make congruent, massive action. Then the process gets repeated again, based on feedback.

I will make a translation of a quote of a spanish philosopher and writer that is my northern star in my personal philosophy of action:

"There are three types of men: The ones who first think and then act, these are the prudent; the ones who act before thinking, these are the impulsive; the ones who act and think at the same time they are doing what they're thinking, These are the strong."

learn while you earn ... by taking action you'll learn what works and what doesn't ... you can't expect to get rich by copying everyone else, you need to find what works for you, what YOU are great at, and exploit that to the maximum

I'd say the more you earn, the more you learn.

Meaning as you earn more, you learn what's important and what's not which allows you to cut through the BS much more easily.

For me it has always been "The More you learn the less you have to do to earn"

Take SEO and SEM for example, 80% of what your read is completley uneccessary to achieve the results you require. Its the old 80/20 rule again. Once you get to the point of knowing the 20%, life becomes a little easier.

    Hi Ryan,

I think that's a bogus statement. It's not knowledge that gets you sales or ahead, but the action combined with the knowledge.

For instance, I know a guy who has been in college for over 20 years. He never held down a job, but continues to insist that he hasn't learned enough yet. Now this guy isn't getting anywhere but in deeper debt. He takes out all kinds of loans so ...

He asked me not that long ago why I am making the money I make, and why he can't. I told him that's because I took action, and he didn't. He could do the very same thing if he wanted to, but he's afraid to step out and take action.

Here's another example: How many times have you seen new people claim information overload? Learning is good, but if you are just seeking knowledge, you are not moving. And moving or taking action will allow you to grow so you can take a step forward.

    Tricky.

Learning is sometimes a block to earning. There are people that will read 20,000 ebooks and not do 1 thing. Then, there's the guy who does 1 thing, and gets rich.

Knowledge, contrary to popular belief, is not power. It is potential power. But, the potential must be realized.

So, in the hands of the right person, yes, the more you learn, the more you earn. In the hands of the wrong person, no amount of knowledge will help.
