My first month Internet marketing - my results and what i have learned.

Well I have been internet marketing now for one month, I read someone else's one month post and really liked the idea behind it and in ways it helped me reading other peoples experiences. So I would like to do something similar and share my experiences of online work and attempting to make money.

Now before I started internet marketing one month ago I didn't really know what it was let alone making a living online from selling other peoples products, it caught my attention because it suits me just right - working from home, my own boss and work the hours I choose (im a big advocate of living life how you want).

So onto the juicy information your all here for:

When I started learning about internet marketing I thought of a fantastic idea, well maybe 4-5 "fantastic ideas" to me, but on paper they weren't and I learned the hard way after buying the domains.

My first website was to plaster as many affiliate links on a website as I could and post a short description about them, the idea was to be an online shop listing the cheapest products from 3 affiliates online (one being Amazon)... I shortly found out it wasn't going to work. Reason being I wasn't targeting a niche - or a market, I was spread over to thin with the website and in the end I had to drop the original idea - the domain is now on ebay for sale.

- Lesson learned from this experience: Dont try do everything, focus on one thing. Focusing on 4-5 + products or slapping affiliate links on a website with a short description will make you no money.

My second idea was to buy and sell domains for profit, I brought 5 domains I thought to be awesome names, turns out they went and selling all of them are on ebay because I cant shift them any other way. (selling lower than I brought them for).

- Dont jump into buying a domain because it looks good, looking good and actually being marketable and profitable are separate, really think about it.

My 3rd idea was to target a niche market with 1,000 searches per month, I figured if I make £1 per sale and 1,000 people visit my site and sell to 100 people then id make £100 in affiliate sales, the product on this website was more focused and overall easier to write about and made content much easier. However what I later learned that just because 1,000 people search this term a month doesn't mean ill be getting all 1,000 people... Probably 400 people a month on rank 1 google spot and selling low value items isn't really worth my time investment - this websites still up on page 2 of google, with no backlinks.

Built using: HTML

- Lesson learned: Just because a program tells you thousands of people search for a term doesn't mean they will be flocking to your website, also there are big names dominating keywords so check if you can compete with them before you create the website.

My current idea im working on is a website built on wordpress, im publishing articles daily, all 100% unique and from my knowledge on the topic to ensure its different from everyone else's; I read the articles 2 times over to ensure there the best quality I can produce, I monetize the website with adsence and Amazon products for items related to my articles. I have also started writing articles for other article directories to start driving traffic to my website - none of the articles are "spun" there all written from scratch for quality.
This has been up for 10 days as of today and writing this post - it currently has 0 traffic but I am going to keep posting articles daily on this website.

So break down on how much I have made on my first month of internet marketing / niche websites:

Total made: £0.52

Costs:
All my silly domains: £15
My hosting package: £2.49 per month

Total Loss: £16.97

So what do I do from here ?

Well for me; I thought about it and realised one thing, I don't have a natural talent for internet marketing and all that means is I have to work harder at it than others - I can think of worse things, like not having access to an internet connection in the first place.

I feel my problem is im listing to everyone else's rules and trying to be a mimic of there success; My firm belief is I need to break the rules and work it for me, following the crowed is why most people don't become successful its those who stop following the Shepard and take there own path.

And my final lesson is that failure isn't real. You just get the answer wrong. In my case I got the answer to making money wrong on 3 occasions and working on a 4th answer, if its wrong. Ill try again, and again, and again.

Hope new marketers managed to learn something from this, not quite sure what... but none the less just thought id share

Good advice . . . focus on on one thing and do it well. Try to offer real value and help people. The money will come if you try to do this and do it well.

You've already learned some good lessons in your first month. I like how you're willing to take action and you seem to learn by doing. That's a great attitude to have. So what if you showed a loss for your first month? If you keep at it, even with only modest success your profit will be enough to make that loss seem like a small little bump.

You need to find something that is credable and that you feel comfortable doing. And not to move from one shiny object to the next.

First off, congrats on taking action. It's a big step that usually takes people a lot longer than a month to do so kudos for that.

I don't really agree with this. There is no reason to invent the wheel here. There are plenty of proven methods that are discussed constantly across this forum that work. It's a matter of implementing and testing and tweaking.

My suggestion to you would be to research a bit better before you dive full steam into a project. We've all been there with projects that just didn't work out for some reason or another but you can maximize your efforts by planning every detail out before you get started. You've learned the hard way how much time can be wasted on strategies that aren't for you.

Lastly, just make sure that you aren't jumping around project to project looking for a quick way to make money. Everything in this industry takes hard work. When something doesn't go as planned for you, figure out why. Where did you go wrong? What can you change that will improve things?

In conclusion: Research every detail that you can and if it's something that appeals to you, jump in. Once you get going, test and adjust until it works up to its potential.

Like I said, keep taking action and you'll end up alright, maximizing your efforts are a big part of making money online.

What I would suggest to you is to research a bit more.

Taking action is good, you need to find someone who has good advice. I am new as well, and I found 2 sites at this forum that are very good. Affilorama and Niche Profit Classroom. You can get a 7 day and 14 day trial membership from them and learn as much as you can in that time. I did and learned a lot in aq short amount of time. Get some good advice, and follow it.

It seems to me you've learned more in one month than what many guys learn in a year or so... I think you are on the good track to success and I'm pretty sure your next month will be much better for you

    I really enjoyed reading this.

-£16.97 is a cheap month when just starting!

I can see you're a real doer. I think you could succeed. You try things out, limit your risk and learn from your mistakes - you're already a year ahead of me when I started!

I think you should carry on as you are until you find the thing that works for you and then stick to it like glue. There is a fine balance between giving up too soon and just ploughing on regardless because you shouldn't give up. Something that is often said on this forum.

Eventually though, you really should make sure you include list building into the equation so keep that at the back of your mind.

I shall look out for further instalments!

    Best of luck
    Rob

You should use your experience and expand on them. For your example about the domain names, you bought. I know people who make a lot of money buying and selling domain names. They are not making money because they are just flat out lucky, they are making money because they have taken the time to discover HOW to make money buying and selling domain names...

The domain you purchased, there are criteria that makes the domain name valuable. Domain age is one of them, was the domain attached to a web site, that was well indexed, with a lot of back links. Did the domain have keywords in it?

It is not that you were un lucky perhaps you did not yet have all the information you needed to make money buying and selling domains.

Reevaluate the domains you have to see if they are worth hanging on to. A domain name that is two years old has more value than a domain name one week old... If you do some searches, there are some things you can do with your domain name to make you some money, while you wait around for it to gain some value.

Me too man. $500 at least. I was afraid to count and now could only do my best to guess. This guy made out like a bandit at such a little loss. I'm a frugal person by nature so when I look back on it I want to strangle myself. Oh well. Time to just make it back.

You are totally, totally doing the math wrong.

    Please read

Why you Don’t Get Any Sales! Internet Marketing Math Explained

1000 searches per month are basically NOTHING. 1000 searches per month..what Google position are you at? Even with #1 top position you would hardly make a sale....let alone that your assumption of 10% conversion is overly optimistic, if not totally unrealistic.

You NEED to understand the relationships search volume and potential clicks/sales, you need to know what an average conversion rate is. Please, again read my above blog entry it explains everything

For a start....you need keywords with very high search volumes, 6000+ BARE minimum, exact match...and you need to know that for sales a conversion rate of 1% - 3% is far more realistic than simply assuming every 10th will convert....

Make sure you go out and find good reliable resources you can count on as your first order of business, get educated.

There is quite a bit of information you will acquire over time and most of it will be helpful for getting traffic to your site.

I can assure you it is not just 1,000 or especially 6,000 searches it will require a lot more than that, you know it is never that easy.

Something that may be helpful off the top, go to Market Samuari and get there 14-day trial, they have some very good videos that will help you out. Most importantly you will learn quite a bit not only about Keyword research, but they go into a full detailed marketing plan that will bring traffic to the sites you presently have...

I see we have all had losses in the beginning, Not me I had it far worst LOL I was actually making 400 usd in my first month.

I was dropshiping mp3 players to the tune of 100 usd a week and just 10 min a day checking out if there where any sales.

After i got slapped by ebay for using the words " shuffle style" (even in the product description I stated that it wasn't apple but a similar style)

I thought to myself I can do this full time just find more products to drop ship. I ended up buying memberships to 2 different drop ship directories who's prices where actually hire than if purchased on ebay. The mp3 sales died out do to high competition and I ended up with nothing just a wake up call from my dream of working few hours.

I think you've probably learned more than you think. This isn't an easy business where you will start making tons of money overnight and you really didn't lose that much money to begin with people have definitely lost more

Also, don't steer to far from the norm to begin with. There are plenty of methods on here that are proven to make money, start there and then expand.

You're on the right track - and you've learnt so much already - probably more than you think! I too have tried a few of the things you have done including domain trading (...so far I have found that a waste of time!!!!).

Now I've discovered what works for me and I'm just going to focus on that. I'm building niche websites on wordpress, around specific keywords, with 100% newly written content and driving traffic to the site from a youtube video I made. The site is making money from google adsense & an amazon store I've put into the website.

I wish you all the best! Internet marketing is certainly a lonely journey @ times - and the battle is ultimately with ourselves. Keep going mate!!

  • There is no such thing as failure, only feedback. You got some great feedback there on what doesn't work. Now you can start to study what does work - find a mentor who's earning the kind of income you want to earn online and with the kind of methods/strategies you want to use. Success leaves clues, and the fastest way to get there is to just R&D (Rip-off and Duplicate) what others are doing (in an honest and ethical way!)

Taking action is the first step and usually the biggest obstacle for new marketers. Don't be discouraged though. The following quote from Thomas Edison should give you something to think about:

Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward....

    -Thomas Edison

"TAKE ACTION" is the first thing everyone tells you and then they leave it at that. I'll add a second part: TRACK EVERYTHING" - It's the only way to ensure your ACTION leads to results.
