Hi guys,
Just a quick domain question I have.
Starting a new project and picked the following domains:
confectionerytips.com
confectionery-tips.com

Which one would be the better domain in regards to SEO? Will Google pick up the word confectionery in the first domain?
Thanks for your help!

Well there is a lot of thinking school on this subject but from what I know, confectionery-tips.com should be your winner.

it wouldn't matter, the first one the poster suggested as an idea is better for the customer and returning customers since it's easier to remember, the one with the hyphen in it is better for the search engines, not for seo purposes since both old the same value in weight anyways, but it just stands out more to the search engine user.

        Starting over again
Why would you think confectionerytips.com is easier to remember than confectionery-tips.com?
        Just trying to understand
        Thanks

I think it's just extra character to enter in the URL bar.. Again, both would be good, do as you feel

conventional standards, just like blue links, ppl will click on blue links more often.

I've also tried TV and radio ads before, guess what? the ones without the hyphen kicked ass simply because it's easier to remember.

    I'd say the first one.

    Actually, either one will fly.

Google, et al will pretty much treat them both the same. I've had domains with a dash (or two, or three,) in them, and still managed to make page one for my niches, and pretty good PR numbers too.

    PascalE,

Visitors usually do not type in hyphens, they tend to remember the name only, not where the hyphens are. So, whether the name is confectionary-tips.com or confectionarytips.com, they will remember it as confectionarytips.com. Remember, your site is not the only site they are thinking about.

So, it is better to have the name without the hyphens.

If you are considering SEO effect, today, search engines do not distinguish between the two. Earlier, the hyphen made it easier for the search engines to distinguish between the words, especially when there was a confusion (expertsexchange.com adding a hyphen is the perfect example ) over how to split the words. However, today, Google takes into account the title, the back links and the on page content to separate the words.

Unless if your niche is very competitive, like credit cards, AND you register a domain like credit-card-cheap-deals-for-students.com, you should not face any problems with search engines, either way.

That makes perfectly sense to me - thanks for the advice.
Just registered the domain without the hyphen.

Hopefully, it wouldn't matter, the first URL is far better for the customer to remember and any reccuring customers since it's doesn't have the - in the title and it is easier to remember when typing in. I'd say the one with the hyphen is theoretically the better one for the search engines, but not for seo since both of them have the same value, visually though I suppose it stands out more to the internet searcher. Hope this helps!

I'd also consider picking up a few other Confectionery related keyword domain names with some nice search stats, especially available domain names with misc. opportunities and possibilities! Short tails, long tails etc...
