It is possible or advisable to build a list using a pen name if you dont want to use your real name?

Does it have any side effect?

Thanks.

Eben Pagan built a $25 million a year business around the pen name David Deangelo so if you were so inclined to use a pen name you shouldn't have any issues.

When I saw the title of this thread, Eben was the first one to come to mind.

But to the OP, nothing wrong with using a pen name, but have to admit, it was a little weird to learn that David D was not a real name.

Yes. I think it's what most marketers do, most of the time. It's completely normal.

All my lists have been built using pen-names.

As long as you have notified the relevant authorities/tax man etc that you are trading under that name, you can happily 'be that name'.

Well, that may vary from country to country.

But I'm not "trading under" any of the pen-names I write under at all, myself. I "trade" only as Alexa Smith.

Yes, you can do that. What I've learned from Robert Kiyosaki is that you do not want anything on your name, when it comes to business.

There are some side effects if you are exposing yourself in different niche markets.

Eben Pagan is in the money making and internet marketing niche. He's also known as David deAngelo in the dating industry. Some of his customers from the dating business were initially confused when his IM business took over.

It can create confusion in the marketplace, if you are building your brand with two different names represented by the same person.

Yes, it is possible. I use a different pen name for each niche I'm in. It actually helps me keep track of my businesses easier and it's much more difficult for people to see what I'm up to.

Is it advisable? Well, it really depends on your business model, the laws in your country, how you plan to promote your business, etc.

There is no reason why you shouldn't use your pen name to build a list or do any business...

It does make sense if you operate in multiple niches that have nothing to do with each other. Having pen names makes sense cause otherwise it can be confusing to people as to which niche you belong to.
