"88% of search dollars spent on paid results, even though 85% of searchers click on organic"

I am constantly bewildered at the number of online businesses that seem to waste huge money on poor search strategy. They don't invest in advanced SEO strategies to create organic traffic but they will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the shareholders at Google happier.

The lure of PPC traffic can sometimes be overwhelming. You get an immediate burst of targeted traffic for keyword phrases you select yourself. It's as easy as researching keywords, writing up your text and submitting your order to whichever search engine you choose. The only issue with this is that it is quite expensive and is only provides a temporary increase in traffic.

The primary benefit of organic traffic is it ends up being more economical and lasts longer then an equivalent PPC campaign and offers a superior ROI.

Organic traffic is the key to long term growth and stability. The budget you spend on ppc for an immediate and short effect of traffic burst, can be invested into SEO for long term results and growth.

I'm not surprised at all by those figures. Too many times the person that is in charge of making that decision (at least at mid-large size businesses) doesn't have the knowledge needed to make a really insightful decision. I did SEO and PPC professionally for a large car dealership chain, and the person that ultimately made the decisions was definitely not a computer person. We just had to hope he would listen to our suggestions.
