Awesome site... Wish I had thought of it!

All,

check this out: Nicholle's Weight Loss Story

Looks like a blog, right?

It probably also looks like Nicholle lives in your same city, huh?

Nope. It's a total affiliate site. Very clever - all the way down to the blog comments.

Amazing stuff, and I'm sure this person is making a KILLING.

make sure to add it to your swipe file!

Now THAT is an affiliate site that every affiliate should try to copy in their own niche. It incorporates testimonials and has the human element that is represented by the person who lost weight.

By the way, it's a cpa portal site.

I have one called First Visit.

It goes back in time a few days (determined by you) to make it look up to date. Then it remember the date for a year so on return visits, it still shows the date you had originally.

You can check it out at: First Visit: Date Script

They use a GEO "targeting" script to get the location from the IP. You can find some free ones that do it.

"This site is in no way affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the products reviewed , its partners, or subsidiaries."

That's the part I have a real problem with if it's an affiliate site. The problem here is that it's misleading - same as with the "Chedda gets Cheddar" site someone linked to earlier this week.

I honestly HOPE the FTC starts cracking down on this kind of thing more sternly, because it's misleading to the public. You could never get away with airing something like this on television without a disclaimer of some sort, but the web is the wild, wild west.

Not only should consumers be protected against this kind of misleading marketing, LEGITIMATE marketers should be protected from unfair illegal competition like this.

NOTE: If they are truly NOT an affiliate, it's all good. But I can't imagine why that site exists in the format it does if it is not. And if it IS an affiliate site, they're lying in the footer, and it's fraud.

So... Am I being to strict in my interpretation? What do you guys think?

It's the Internet, nobody cares (as long as you don't hack into people's bank accounts or something like that). If they regulated the Internet like they do normal businesses I suspect 75% of IMs (including white hats) would be in prison.

        Wrong.

Ask Frank Kern. Or Google about companies fined over privacy policies. Or some of the Pyramid sites. Or Alert Pay. Or ....

Just like offline businesses, it takes longer to catch some over others.

Remember, some tv aads run for years before they get the smack down. Then some still run.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of these sites out there. And they are affiliate sites. You just set up a fake story and link to some free trial offers where the buyer only pays $1-$5 for shipping and is then locked into a continuity program until they cancel.

These CPA offers pay from $25-$35 each, sometimes more. He/She is making about $60 per conversion and the visitor only has to drop about $8 initially.

Too bad the story is totally fake and has nothing to do with the actual products being promoted. Maybe not illegal, but you can make your own moral judgment.

Not only does it matter, the FTC can go after the actual merchant for such blatantly fraudulent behavior on the affiliate's part.

The affiliate shouldn't condone this type of site at all. It's just too risky, and if you have to cheat this way to sell the product, it's not a good product.

A REAL marketer would CREATE this kind of success story to market with. Find a real lady, tell a real story.

It's shocking to see so many people complain about "ftc", "scam", "fake"...it's unbelievable.
Wow! It's amazing to me how many people on this board are fine with outright deception.

So many posts recently have basically said "Lying to people is okay, because it's just sales"

The ironic thing is, many of these posters promote products of their own. People can form their own opinions about exactly what's ethical and what's not, but if a marketer has no problem lying to potential customers, I certainly wouldn't trust anything they promote - how could I?

In marketing, accentuating the positives of something and glossing over the negatives can be seen as "just sales". Clearly, one wants to make their product as good as possible, and that's widely accepted and understood. Discussing the potential benefits of something, or the "best-case scenarios" is "just sales". I have no problem with making a product look as good as possible or with discussing the potential that something has.

Fake testimonials, doctored income proof, lies about affiliate status - these types of strategies give all marketers a bad name.

Obviously this is unethical, but no more than the average CB affiliate site where "reviews" are given of products the site owner has never actually brought or used, and a product is highly recommended regardless of whether it works. In this case they're just doing it a hell of a lot better... offers expiring on the same day (apparently).. geotargeting script... fake comments, fake story etc. IMO it's not the marketing tricks you use that determine how ethical you are, the only thing that matters is the quality of the product and how much value there is in what you're promoting.

And these "free trials" are based on those unholy negative option offers and sooner or later the feds will lose patience. Obviously the faking of testimonials here is not going to fly for very long. Same thing with the allegations that canceling these "Trial" offers is virtually impossible.

Anyone with half a brain realizes both those methods are destined to fail long-term.

That said, the faux blog landing page seems to work, although I'm sure the amount of TRUST internet surfers have in blogs may be reduced because of offers like this.

I'm sure this technique can easily be tweaked to fit even the most honest affiliate marketers needs. No sense throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

It's shocking to see so many people complain about "ftc", "scam", "fake"...it's unbelievable.

To those folks: have you ever watched an infomercial about weight loss products? Close to 100% of the people who lost weight did not use the product being advertised.

Or lets take the CB review pages for instance...
There are thousands of review pages where the owners of those pages endorse the products without ever using it. Keith Kogane, you said: "A REAL marketer would CREATE this kind of success story to market with. Find a real lady, tell a real story". I take offense to that. I AM a REAL marketer and so is the guy who set up that affiliate site. Find a REAL lady to try out those bogus crap diet products? hahahahaha....IMAGINE the amount of time it will take before you can start your affiliate campaign!

As I said....one can easily spot the performing affiliates from the ones that don't know much.

Ethically challenged? Clueless? Seems the warriorforum has become a place where flaming have become the norm. There are hundreds of affiliate tactics that might look like unethical but if studied closely are not.

Oh please do point out cases where affiliates have been hammered by the ftc for setting up clever review pages??

Over the years I have met a few people who constantly looked for the quick buck, who were wondering why they were inside a small cell a little later.

I know even more who weren't caught who if you asked them to answer honestly, would admit that they wished they had earned their money more ethically. They did feel uncomfortable with themselves and were never happy in themselves from what I could see.

Are you saying that to be a good affiliate you have to be dishonest and lie?

What utter nonsense. If a person gets in trouble for unethical practices they that person only has themselves to blame.

There are loads of ways of making great money without lying, cheating and scamming people.

Offer GREAT service and a GREAT product at a fair price, in high enough volume and you can't go far wrong. No one said it was easy, but it's not impossible either.

Agreed. I didn't mean to piss you off.

It's just that I get so mad by scammers, especially as I have been scammed in the past by someone who ultimately ended up with more that a rap on the knuckles by the authorities. So at least there was some justice.

I was still out of pocket though and if I see some company or website stepping way over the line I will say so very clearly and very bluntly.

          Hey guys,

I hate this type of marketing. It is very effective, but go to either the **** pill or Colon Cleanse page and read there "Terms of Use" page.

You have to go to the bottom of the page and click on the link, that takes you to the fine print.

You get a free 14 day trial, then they charge your credit card $79.95 for the **** pills and $78.84 for the colon cleanse. (Thats $158.79 per month for something you could buy at the health food store for $40!) And the part that really sucks is that the 14 day trial starts the day you order, not the day you receive the products.

You must have already cancelled the agreement by day 14 or there is no refund for that charge/order. Many more restrictions...check it out for yourself.

So many people have reported problems with these sites...the phone number provided doesn't work and the only way most people have been able to stop the shipments is to cancel their Credit Card. (Search "**** scam" or "**** Fraud" in google)

So, you see why I hate these sites. Unsuspecting users are thinking they are getting free samples to try, and end up paying nearly $160 for the privilege.

Also, the **** used in the pills is inactive. Does nothing for you. Some of these companies actually don't use the **** in the pills, but use Purple colored Corn Starch in the pills.

If you want good ****, get the juice, and make sure it has not been "heat and spray treated", as this kills the active ingredients.

          I hope this helps,

          Dr. Adam

Indeed a good looking Affiliate Review Site. Only problem I see is that there are a number of such cookie cutter sites with similar personal stories for same products and same ads from Opra show and like. How well they are doing in sales and how much they have to spend on PPC no body knows. There is fierce competition in this niche so be aware and try to be different.

There is the famous salesletter from The Wall Street Journal in which they tell a story about two fellows who went through school together. Now, many years later, one has been quite successful financially, and the other has not.

The difference? The successful fellow reads The Wall Street Journal.

Ahhh come on! That's all we need to do to be successful? Wow, who would have thought it could be that easy.

A few years back there was a billboard advertising campaign for "Hudepohl Lite" - a local beer. The billboard contained two photographs.

The photo on the left was of three shaply, young ladies in bikinis. The photo on the right was of two guys - weight lifters - body builders - with the kind of packed abs every guy wishes he had.

The headline at the top said, "If You Drink Lite Beer, You'll Look Like This."

Could it be true? When I tried it, I looked drunk. :-)

So much for truth in advertising.

That world famous piece of copy (arguably) made between 1-2+ BILLION dollars in sales for the WSJ over the 28 years it ran in PRINT... and it was a FICTIONAL story yet it touched a nerve with the reader in ways that copy today could not and has not done since.

Google -> Two Young Men letter - Google Search

      Terrific example Don.

      YeaH. LOL.

Like that semi-buff dude with the ponytail got buff by swinging his arms and legs in a ski-walking motion.

Or that you are gonna look like that model or celebrity if you wear the clothes and sunglasses they wear, yep, you gonna look just like them.......despite the leprosy on half your face.

If Chuck Norris endorsed "High Karate Cologne" for men, yeah, I'll buy cause then, either chicks will associate The Chuckster with me if I smell like that, that me and Chuck are in the same exact league, or spraying some on will "magically" give me some kick-ass martial arts moves or simply give me the edge in kicken ass.

Yeah, baby, spray this on, become Chucks twin brother or not too distant relative in looks and skills.

      LOL

Jesus, I stopped falling for advertisement like this when I was 8, but I guess it still works.

Like ordering a "diet coke" with any heavily breaded, butter soaked & marinated deep-fried lard fat product rolled into sugar and syrup, wedged in a sandwich made of two slices of monkey fat dripping with congealed gravy is "making a difference" in battling the bulge or real effort in cutting back, LOL.

Other products that have no calories, no fat, no carbs, no sugar, no salt and no transfat:

      Rat Poison, paint thinner

Yep, I'm sold.....let me get my "MENTOS", the fresh maker, and everyday is going to be perfect, coincidense after coincidense of any bad luck INSTANTLY turned into good luck in MY favor. LOL.

Don't blame the advertisers. Blame us, the easily led sheep.

Unless the product is kick ass and matches rep and claims or goes beyond over-delivery, I steer clear on purpose of advertise products that blantanly and needlessly insult ones intelligence.

I've yet to buy a methos, and refused several offered to me for free.

Not necessarily a moral issue, my stomach starts turning when I see that name and remember those commercials.

The gag reflex starts tingling in my throat.

Don't be surprised if the FTC starts coming down on a few of these people and/or the affiliate
networks. It's just bad business all around. Google recently slapped anyone running **** ads big time.

A quick google search will show you that the FTC and BBB are on to the **** Berry. So it's only a matter of time before commissions start being locked up.

This type of marketing is the norm--on and offline.

Actors are hired to promote products on T.V. all the time

You mean besides lying about losing weight using something that doesn't make you lose weight, or lying about the free offer ending tomorrow, or photo shopping images to make it appear that you've lost weight using the product when you haven't, etc?

I don't really have a problem with the storyline, it's the promoting of something that doesn't work that bothers me.

Just because a lot of people engage in unethical marketing doesn't make it ok....not even if actors are involved.

              Mmmmm.

I think sometimes you have to take a stand. If I think it is unethical and dishonest it won't get any support from me. None. Whether it is an affiliate site or not. Whether it is common occurrence or not.

One has to decide whether one thinks something is ethical or not. It is easy to sit on the fence and pretend these kinds of things are ok.

There are a lot of new people who visit forums such as this and I personally will never vouch for unethical practices such as these.

You can take it or leave it. But that's my view and I'm sticking to it.

One doesn't have to resort to such extremly poor ethical choices and in these cases, blatently illegal marketing methods to make money.

In my opinion one can make more money these days by being more ethical, more genuine and more helpful to customers. By doing this it is easier to rise above all the crap and scammers out there.

The end result is happier customers, more profit and being able to sleep at night :-)

Fair enough. I know what you mean. But I know people that have ended up in jail for mis-selling stuff and in one instance it was diet related.

I KNOW that the site mentioned in the opc is breaking the law. If enough people did complain about it I can guarantee action would be taken.

I don't spend my time riding round on a white horse, but I have been in business for 26 years and I have seen the fly by nights come and go.

If you want to build a real, genuine business and not be looking over your shoulder all the time, then you can't be dishonest in your advertising or in your dealings with customers.

Just because a lot of people scam others or rip them off or act unethically, or it even seems "normal" to do so, it doesn't make it right.

As I said, treat people properly and 99 times out of a hundred they will treat you properly too.

However for me, the most important thing I have learnt from this post is setting up a swipe file. I have heard of a swipe file before, but never thought of setting up a swipe file in my favourites to save sales pages. Great idea.

A word of caution here folks. These program referred to on the website are all over the internet and are getting hammered in about 30 states. AOL had to put a halt to their advertising due to all the consumer complaints. Take a look at their terms on the bottom of the website..I've copied a portion for you.

Terms & Conditions: (these terms/conditions only apply to the free trial) Start your trial now to receive a full month supply of ****-Noni Burner (retails for eighty four dollars). You will have 14 full days from today to evaluate and decide if you wish to keep the remaining 30 day supply and continue receiving ****-Noni Burner. If you enjoy ****-Noni Burner, simply do nothing. You will be billed the discounted price of only 79.95 at the end of your 14 day trial period for your initial supply. You will be billed again for the same amount 30 days from today to replenish your supply and begin your monthly auto shipment billed monthly at the same price unless cancelled(this is a savings off the retail price, and is available to you today).

The deal here is ...you sign up for a FREE 14 day supply. They send you a 30 day supply which you receive on day 13 and don't bother to cancel...(How many of you read the Terms???) You are billed the $79.95 and good luck trying to reach them...Do a search on google and read it for yourself. My wife's sister got stung by them ...She now reads all Terms I guess...LOL

Very well put together and believable! I also believe the quotes from Dr. Oz on Oprah really help her sell her product.

I will just say that I hope that spending too much time in "this industry" doesn't doom my soul. This site, at first glance, just gives me bad vibes and greeeezzzy feelings. But I see a lot of posters saying this is the coolest and you should copy this. God I HOPE not. This is not something I would every be proud of no matter how much cash it brought me.

None the less, there is something for everyone to learn from that site...

Good find CAM - this thread is getting a lot of attention and so is Nicolle's website...

Whenever I see those types of scripts, they always mention the same city, but it's about 10 miles from here. I live just outside of Baltimore city, but the script never says Baltimore. It always uses this other tiny suburb. I guess that means my ISP has their local server there?

Why in gods name have you posted a stupid 1 line response on a thread that's nearly 2 years old?!?!?!?!

Please don't bring old threads alive for the sake of raising your post count. Members on this forum dislike it and it certainty gets you no points/rep around here.

That's because it's illegal to do that now. They made a ton of money.
