How Much Does A Website Have To Make Per Month To Be A Keeper?

I'm thinking of cleaning up my website portfolio. I'm just curious as to how much per month a website needs to make for you not to consider it a flop? I know that the answer will vary from person to person and also the method of how it is monetized. I'm just curious what the average is.

Well, if its making any amount of money, then its worth keeping. However, while you might be 'making money' from the site, you still need to weigh this up against the cost of hosting the site (if applicable), and also the amount of work you'll need to do to keep the site relevant (is it high-maintenance or not?). As always, its a balancing act involving several factors, and these may differ between each site.

But if you make a 'set it and forget it' webpage that makes a small passive profit, then there's no reason to drop it.

If some website is giving profit.
profit means. you are investing less(time and money) and getting more in return expected by you then it is not a flop.
For me a website giving >30$ per month is not flop.

i disagree. If it is not making you money, then it is defintely nota keeper because it is just costing you > however , there are ways to get your website earning.

It is possible that you are making money but it is still not covering the cost of the website finacially . In that case , it is still not keeper

You ultimately need to decide what you want the website to do for you > do you want to buy a domain name , flip it and then sell and repeat the process . is that more profitable for you

do you want to keep the website for yourself , do you want to make a website for others and charge top $$$ for it

You ultimately have to do decide

Only you can answer the question - how much time and effort and money is needed to maintain the website vs how much money you are making vs the total money you are making from all your projects combined? If the ratio of income of this site is less compared to your overall income, and if the effort required to keep this site is a lot, then you can consider selling it off.

    It's all relative.

What do you value your time at? For some people they will be happy working for $10/hr. Others won't work for less than $100/hr. It's really tough to generalize and put a monetary value on something like that when it's all about personal preference. What one person might consider a "flop" another person might consider a failure and vice versa.

For me, I aim to work at about $50/hr which requires me to outsource some of the more tedious tasks like some article writing and some link building and focusing only on the big picture of my business.

You should have a benchmark for yourself. Why? Because what is good enough for Mr. A may not be same for Mr. B That said, i will also want to say that as long as the site is profitable depending on what your benchmark is, you can keep it. Else flip it to make a minimum of 8 times the monthly profit.

If you track your sites on a monthly basis, keeping in mind that some sites are seasonal, and you see the profitability starting to drop, then you may want to sell the site on Flippa (or elsewhere) as opposed to investing more time in the hopes of reinvigorating the site.

If you have a group of sites, a topical "authority farm" of sites that establish yo has an expert, you may want to re-invest rather than sell off such older sites.

But always keep in mind that whether you are talking about individual sites or an "authority farm" of sites, topics wane and flow. A hot topic today may be worthless in two years, and then in three more years it may become a hot topic again.

Look to the past for historical references to such topics. If they have cycled on a short term int he past they may be worth holding on to. If they run in long cycles or no apparent cycles, then by all means, sell them off before they start to drop too far, where they will become worthless.

But, it is almost never a "walk away from it" scenario, especially if you cach a site that has just peaked. List it on flippa immediately, squeeze wht you can out of it and move on. then if that topic becomes hot again, just rebuild your site with a new domain name and go after the profits again.

It's very relevant. If it's making any money and you don't have to work on it, it's good.
