What is happening in gmail?

Thanks guys for helping.
Really appreciate it.
I dont seem to be having this already.
I didnt press the insert key but i will take note next time..
could be cache problem.

I realized now there is a change in gmail when you are typing an email.

Try this:

Type a sentence or a phrase or a word. Then go back a few spaces and add in another word, it will not push the letters further as you are typing, it overwrites it, eating up your existing letters.

Anyone experiencing the same?

ie :
if you type this original sentence : i am an affiliate.
then you go back 10 spaces and add in the word : active

it should be : i am an active affiliate.
But now it will show : i am an activeate.

Part of the word affiliate is eaten up by the word active.

I just tried and it's working fine for me. Maybe your browser or something. Did you try with a different browser?

i am on my ipad now, but if i remember correctly most keyboards have an "insert" key that is usually in the same key bunch as the page up, home, end.... keys.

pressing that key toggles the "overwrite" feature you are experiencing.

I think you hit something weird on your keyboard. I do it occasionally and this happens to me in word. It's really annoying and I don't know what I keep hitting

It is working fine here. I am in the Northeastern part of Ontario. It is cold and snowy here, but there are no issues with Gmail. Best wishes to you.

Like every other key on your keyboard, the Insert key affects the current application only.

This has nothing to do with Gmail. I first experienced this thing long ago when Google or Gmail even didn't exist: it can happen with any text editor. Until today I don't know exactly what causes it (probably some key combination), but I know that: when this happens, I save the work and restart the application. Then it's OK again. In Gmail you should copy the text before closing the browser.

Matt is right, it is the insert key that's causing it! Hit it once, the cursor turns thick and then works in replacing mode, hit it once again and it turns back to normal.

It's strange how gmail works for you in Firefox but not in IE.

Have you been using the MS virtual keyboard and done something with the 'Insert' key there?

      Just a thought,

      Jeff.
