Tracking traffic stats

Hey guys,

I am getting closer to getting my website done, and I would like to track the traffic I am getting, where it's coming from etc.

I was wondering, is google analytics a good way to go? And does it really do that much more than the simple cpanel awstats? I'm not real familiar with how to read either of these logs, but I'd like to get a pretty good tracking system from the get-go.

Thanks!
Tyson

I would use both google analytics and the awstats or webalizer from Cpanel

Sometimes if you see a blip or strange thing happening you can see if both stats sources agree.

Do not get too hooked on the exact numbers, it can drive you to obsession

    e.g.
I have one site that only had around 1000 visitors per month. After working on trafiic I can see that both stats programs show a strong upward trend. Now around 3,000. Its the trend you are looking at as much as the numbers.

Awstats etc it rubbish compared to Google Analytics. GA is better than what most people think. You can drill quite deep into your stats. It offers you information that Awstats could never give you.

Depends at what level you want to track. Do you just mean organic traffic? In which case yes, GA and awstats.

The best solution for tracking email promotions, banner ads etc... is to install tracking software on your domain.

Ok so I installed Analytics on my website, will just have to browse through it a bit to learn how to read it.

As far as installing more software onto my website to track additional things, do you have any suggestions? How does it work exactly? Do you set up your advertisements with a tracking code in them so the program will know where the traffic is coming from?

      Thanks for the help,
      Tyson

In one word...yes! Certainly worthwhile if you are paying for traffic. Even if the company you are buying traffic from provides stats, I would always track the traffic myself. Also you have all your stats in one place which makes it easy to check them.
