Your Affiliate Sales Will Decrease.

On the news in the UK there is a lot of buzz about how bad cookies from advertisers are on your computer gathering your information.

The proposal is to have you to opt to allow cookies every time you enter a site.

This will certainly effect the sales for us marketers through many affiliate programs. A large portion of my Amazon sales are from unrelated products to those I promote which I guess is contributed by returning visitors.

I don't think a privacy page or disclaimer will work but it is proposed as an action they have to take to allow.

Example Source: BBC News - Beware the cookie monster: a new law aims to protect privacy

I think they have a typo on the year for implementing this.

What are your views on this.

  • this might be frightening indeed, and it will effect other things as well like the remarketing feature in Google adwords.
  • I believe there are other options for affiliate tracking that can get around this. I'm not that technical but that's what I've heard before.
  • LSO (super) cookies aren't regular cookies. They stay on your machine even after you clear cookies by conventional means and they track you. There was legislation going on against these particular form of cookies in the states, too. As far as regular cookies, I'm sure that those will not be targeted by this legislation - just the ones that track your movement on the rest of the net (like FB currently does). As far as affiliate tracking, that was done with regular cookies long before anyone was able to devise LSO super cookies, so I imagine that it's nothing to worry about at the affiliate level for now.
