why do alot of marketers use wordpress?

Hi Warriors!

I am trying to build an amazon review site using wordpress but I feel wordpress is kind of limited or retarded (maybe I am lol) I see it lacks all the features and looks..also from my understanding is you cannot add menus to the right or left unless it comes already built in and you have to know html in order to start moving things..and it doesn't always work since each theme has its own stuff, I used Joomla before but not sure if its a good CMS to use in terms of SEO but they look great and easier to move things around and change positions for the modules and components

Just wondering what's the hype about wordpress.. almost everybody is using wordpress on their domains but I just can't get it!

I don't want to build like a regular review site that has the review and a menu on the right and a header.. each time I visit an amazon review site I see the same issue.. just reviews and products.. the main page doesn't look super and the whole structure doesn't look that nice.

I know if I had a good designer or the skills I can make wordpress look amazing but in Joomla even if I don't know html I still can make it look good..

Nobody is forcing you to use WordPress. It's a good tool (I think) but, certainly, not for everyone.

People use it because it has a huge follower crowd and many, many free resources.

The look of the frontend depends solely on the theme you are using; and a theme can de done to look anything you want.

However, if you are more familiar with another CMS - go ahead, use it, build your site(s) and don't get stuck with questions like the one you posted

I like Joomla because its easier for me but I find it lacks the needed plugins, they have alot of good ones.. but I thought wordpress is used for a reason and as steven Clayden stated it has alot of great plugins.. I don't want to use Joomla but the problem is every once they come up with a whole new version and upgrading to it will be done manually and it causes alot of issues and for SEO it doesn't have alot of good plugins + the good plugins are paid

      Thanks!

Wordpress is very powerful and eay to use. Lots of plugins to help the look and setup of the site etc. The amazon review sites you have seen are probabley working. A crappy looking site can work just as good as a pretty looking site.

The plugin issue is a double-edged sword...

Ignorant people use plugins for the sake of using plugins; they install every shiny new gizmo and then either complain about their sites being slow or about their host suspending their account for the huge amount of resources used!

Smart users install ONLY plugins that are needed on that specific site, depending on the required additional features.

I think many use it for the easiness in terms of SEO, by the plugins. If not, you'd have to do things manually like this:

    # Begin 301
    RewriteEngine On

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.xxxx\.com [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.xxxx.com/$1 [L,R=301]

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>

    # END WordPress

    I rather just use a simple plug-in.

Very bad example for the "need" of plugins.

That's nothing else just the default .htaccess file WP creates - no need for any plugin for it.

Did you mean for the 2 lines to redirect the www vs. non-www urls? Hardly a convincing argument for the use of any plugin.

It's just a faster way to implement a site. Sure you may need some custom work to get the perfect layout, but you're most likely 75% of the way there from the start.

You also get free resources, and extensive support.

Add in all the plugin options and it nearly levels the playing field for beginner non techy marketers.

There certainly is no hard and fast rule that you must use Wordpress, however it is simple to setup, and as has been stated, there are many free tools to help you with your marketing and SEO.

Just use whatever platform suits you best, this way you will always be comfortable, and will crank out sites a lot quicker.

I like word press because im not good at website development, with word press and a premium template plus some free add-on tools i can publish a website with an article on within an hour.

Simply wordpress saves me time and money instead of having to outsource all the work to web developers and putting in more time than what is needed, one lesson i learned very early in making money online - The more time you have to dedicate to creating content, the more money you can potentially make.

Saying that though, if you and wordpress don’t get on there are alternatives and I recommend taking them as you will want a comfortable work environment.

Using a content management system CMS like Wordpress or Joomla allows you not only to quickly install a website using a template, but it also allows you to keep editing the content quickly. I think that's the key, as times change, the plugins and functionality will change too.

Many times, if you hire a programmer you'd have to ask the programmer to make changes. A CMS program will allow you to make your own changes on the fly!

I am not complaining or bit.. about the free product, as you see alot of users and most of them are using it and I didn't like the product which doesn't mean its a bad product!!!!!!! it is way more famous than any other similar product, I wanted to know why people use it and for what reason, if there is something special that I am missing

its just a question! why are you flipping? from your profile it shows you have been here since 2009 and have alot of posts but still you cannot discuss things, this is a discussion forum and we are allowed to ask questions as long as we are not offending people so please show some respect

Thanks guys for replies.. I will try to work on both wordpress and Joomla.. get more into html and see if I can play around with the themes and make them look more pro

Yes your reply should be why you are using wordpress and why do you like it. Not to start assumptions as " Entitlement mentality much? " Dr Phill ..as the title shows I asked why do alot of marketers use wordpress, I didnt say why the "hell" .. take a look at robp12 and the other replies and how constructive they were. you still don't get the point

Software does things. You get the software when those are the things you want to do.

You don't seem to know what Wordpress does.

You're upset that you have to know HTML to move the sidebar, but you are not saying "wow, it sure is cool that I HAVE A DAMN SIDEBAR without having to know any HTML."

I didn't like the way the software is designed but I still see alot of people using it and alot of them are users who do not know html, so I wanted to know WHAT I AM MISSING, since I don't know alot about wordpress I came here and I asked but u started to rant saying I do not appreciate that its free and people worked hard to get it to that point... ofcourse its an amazing software if alot of people are using it...nobody can argue that but since I am not into html then it might be not for me if I want to do alot of changes..as easy as that..no need to cry .. yes I don't know HTML so what? lol so if I don't know HTML then I cannot ask a question?

People can use whatever they like! if they see something is popular and they tried it but didn't get the results they expected then they ask the people who loves that software, why do you use it? whats special about it? maybe I don't know how to use it and they can tell me how to take advantage and I become a fan of that software or product

              3. You can be CDarklock fan but look at all the posts from other users, and even your posts were constructive and were relevant to the question

Plenty of people here have used Wordpress for the wrong things, wasted a lot of time and money trying to make it work, then ultimately had to throw it away and start over.

In the process, they tend to create what I call the Frankenpress monster: they load up Wordpress with plugin upon plugin upon plugin, a massive theme with umpty bajillion options, and several dozen custom hacks they had to hire a programmer to do for them. Then they start cackling "IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIVE, BAHAHAHAHA" as their hideous creation lumbers across the internet taking four minutes to load and crashing more browsers than it's compatible with.

And then they go "wait, this is retarded, what am I doing wasting my life with all this nonsense" and switch to something else.

Wordpress is not, for example, a sensible competitor to Joomla. They are designed for very different purposes, and in most cases one or the other will be a better choice.

Wordpress is a very good CMS with a really good support and community. There are countless plugins (free of course) and templates.

Premium templates are a must and are cheap, so get one if you mean serious business.

    WordPress is great because:

    1. It's free, all you have to do is pay for your own hosting.
    2. It's open source with a large community of people who are active in developing new plug-ins, improvements, themes, frameworks, etc.
    3. It's completely flexible to basically anything you need to do. If you can think of it, chances are, you can implement it in Wordpress.

Just take some time to actually learn the ins and outs of Wordpress, you'll be happy with the functionality and customization aspects of it when you get used it it. I thought the same thing when I initially switched from Blogger a few years ago, but when you adjust, it's definitely superior!

Wordpress is just a bunch of php code pre-configured to perform in an organized way. To say it's "limited or retarded" is the same thing as calling any website platform "limited or retarded," especially since you can add anything you want to to that php code, including menus and SEO.

And yes, you do "have to know html in order to start moving things.." You have to know html to do anything with a blog or a website. Why in the world would a lack of knowledge make a platform "limited or retarded"? Are jets "limited or retarded" because you can't fly them? Are foreigners "limited or retarded" because you can't communicate with them in their own language?

I use it because it is so easy and trouble free. I had websites for many years without using WP. There are pros and cons for both ways. I just like to spend more of my time on the marketing, traffic building, writing, converting, etc. For ME Wordpress is just a tool like many of the other ones I use.

I personally like to use wordpress because I won't have to use html codes and stuff like that. If I want a certain look I will just simply search for certain themes, even paid themes because these often contain more customise options. But as someone said you arent obliged to use wordpress

Just for clarification (because no WP fan will tell you the truth ever)

WP is very easy to install.
WP is very easy to start blogging right away after the installation.
WP is very easy to switch from one ready-made theme to another.
WP is very when it comes to add an additional feature with a plugin.

And that's it. All the easy-peasy BS stops here.

If you have no idea about XHTML/CSS but you want to make big custom changes in the theme you are using... WP is freaking difficult and complicated. Mind you: it's not really about WP, just the XHTML/CSS based design!

If you want to add/tweak WP's behaviour but you don't know PHP... WP is extremely difficult to deal with.

It looks you fall into the underlined group above: you don't know HTML, you don't know CSS, you don't know web design - yet you want to able to radically change the look of a theme. Forget it!

As an alternate reply to your original question: people use it because they are happy with the zillion free and paid themes provided by professional designers... or they don't want to make drastic changes as you do. Finally, those that want custom theme/look they either know CSS or they have money to pay a pro service provider.

I guess the lack of HTML/CSS knowledge is limiting me from reaching what I want, I actually spoke to my friend and he works for a very famous magazine, he is a web developer and he was a huge fan of Joomla but he said the things you can do with wordpress are amazing but I thought he would say that since he knows the ins and out and it won't be the best for a beginner like me who wants to do "more advanced stuff without the html knowledge"

Thank you DanEitreim, yea many wordpress users are telling me that, I think the more you use something the more you get used to it, I will try to use wordpress this time and make few tweaks on it, I usually use firebug to change things since I don't know html so I change the fonts or any elements.. but it seems that its as same as Joomla or even better

I guess the lack of HTML/CSS knowledge is limiting me from reaching what I want
Well, that's a short-sighted view of the life...
The lack of skills with image editing software doesn't stop me from having professional graphics: I just simply outsource that task.

Guys, is it true (as I've heard) that Wordpress is very (if not the most) Seo-friendly platform out there.
    Did I hear right?
    And if yes, why?

What makes wordpress so great is the huge amount of plugins that you have and it's pretty easy to use.

Free software that can be set up fast and customised easily with a huge choice of themes... makes sense really that a lot of people use it. Also a lot of hosts offer one click installs. So the barrier to entry is extremely low because you don't need to invest much time or money to get started.

Well, I cannot speak for any other marketers, but the reason I now pretty much use Wordpress for all of my niche sites is because it is very FAST and easy to set up, configure and maintain which means it makes me more money faster than if I had to hand code another html site.

And as far as customization goes, I personally just use the Weaver Pro ($20 for all your sites - $40 for the developer version, I think) theme because it is based on the Twenty 10 theme and allows you to change about 300 different options including left or right sidebars (or no sidebar at all), and all of that on a per page basis if that is what you want to do.

The only caveat that I would add to this amazing theme is that if you want a custom header, then you may have to get one made for you or do it yourself.

A very small price to pay for another stream of income.
