Is Facebook Really Vital?

I'm trying to set up an affiliate marketing site plus PLRs.
I've used Twitter but never Facebook.
Do you think Facebook is really necessary?
I understand the more you are out there, the more chances you have but have any of you noticed a difference when you either added or deleted Facebook?
Just general information, I'm not aiming at a young demographic.

Yes, FB is vital. It may not work for everyone, but the ad potential is enourmous. Ads are still cheap outside the US.

Plus, your older demographic is one of the fastest growing segments on Facebook now.

    No its not vital.

But it sure can do you a lot of good

I use facebook for some stuff but at the same time , there are sites that I will never consider advertising on facebook because its just not the right place for that.

Dont head to facebook because everyone is saying that you should. Go there if it makes sense for your business

No, it's not necessary.....yet. There are plenty of successful marketers that have built and are building businesses without FB's help. You can get tons of traffic without Facebook.

Though it's easy to use and monitor, it would almost seem silly not to use it. But as it is, it will really depend on your business model and what you're trying to accomplish.

There may come a day (or not) where FB will be might be an integral part of most businesses, but that day has not arrived yet (if ever).

Not vital, but you'll be missing out on a treasure trove of demographic and psychographic information. Facebook ads can work very well to drive targeted traffic to your site.

Here is the deal: Facebook is just another channel, just like Google, newspapers, email, direct mail, speaking events, magazines, flyers, posters, cold calling, and hassling people on the street.

If you can reach your target market effectively (i.e. make money) through Facebook then go ahead and use it. Otherwise focus on whatever puts cash in your pocket.

Twiter is pretty much really saturated but if you can keep working it and get targeted followers. I know one guy who sold a course for a few hundred dollars and made over 3K using twitter and automated webinars

Thanks. Not using Facebook personally, I didn't know if it would be wise to spend the time on it for marketing.
The reply about 10,000 on twitter is like 500 on Facebook shocked me.

I always thought it was more for teens.

Its like you said in the original post. Its important and useful, but not vital. Personally, I'm working on mastering a few traffic generation techniques. Once I have time I might work on mastering Facebook but for now, I'm happy doing what I'm doing.

It wasn't vital until Mark Zuckeberg created it, you could make big money without it before, I don't see why you cannot now... sure, it raises the chances for success!

No, it's not vital. But if you want massive exposure, Facebook does help.

No it's definitely not vital. It's pretty good for traffic though. Then
again, you can get traffic from pretty much any PPC network if
    you know what you're doing.

Agreed with all here, not vital, but it's a great traffic source and an option you should consider. If you don't utilize it, the world won't end However, there are 900 million or some odd Facebook accounts. They claim 60% are active (on at least once per week). You have demographics targeting and can reach your target market pretty well.

And that's just the Ads aspect. Nevermind the social media aspect of presence. Using Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets is a great means of exposure, depending on what your goals are.

    Just my .02.

You should not forget Facebook when promoting your products and services. Facebook has a lot of potential buyers. Based from the statistics, there are more than 800 million active users, 50% of them log on to Facebook. So you might consider promoting your stuffs on facebook. This is just an option for you.

  • Facebook is huge! Facebook Ads are cheaper and more targeted than any other PPC and you can build your list with custom fan page tabs. It's a no-brainer to use Facebook for IM!

Never going on Facebook, it sounded like a daunting task but Russel makes it sound much easier than I thought.
I was more afraid that if you were new to Facebook and just started using it, people might see it more as a troll thing. It works much differently than I thought it would so that aspect isn't a consideration.
Thank you all for the thoughtful answers and taking the time to help.
