How Do You Optimize Mic Levels?

Does anyone happen to have any tips on optimizing
microphone volume levels? (I have no clue where to
set the volume level when I record).

Also, is there a piece of free software that might
optimize my recording levels for me? (I'm running
Windows XP).

Any tips would be much appreciated!

Note: Currently I have to crank my microphone volume
up full blast in order to get my voice to record at a fairly
normal audio level.

There's a decent free tutorial on how to 'Ace the Audio' by
    Lon Naylor:

Ace the Audio : Learn Camtasia – Online Camtasia Training and Tutorials (no affil.)

He'll take you through all the elements you need to consider
in your software and equipment to get the best sound you
    can with your set-up.

    Good luck.

If you're using Windows, just go to the control panel and click sound. You should see a list of sound devices and you can configure them and set the levels.

You may easily go to the start menu > All programs > Accessories > entertainment and then volume adjuster and adjust the suitable microphone setting easily and as better as you would like to record and suites you fit.
