OK, I'll "come out" to everyone on this forum.

I'm deathly afraid of Facebook and incorporating that into my marketing strategies. I'm not even on it (yet) for myself, just due to some of the fears I'm going to list below.

So tell me, am I a baby? Or are these things relevant?

(By the way, I'm an author and speaker about to break out in my niche, so everyone knows.)

* Being spammed by competitors or people who hate my message or hate me "just because"
* The amount of time it takes per day to grow or do things on Facebook to "take care of my "friends"
* Creting unique content that might be good enough to use elsewhere, but now it's reserved for Facebook only "friends"

Etc.

Does anyone think that these fears are valid, and they should or shouldn't keep me off of Facebook as a growing IM strategy for myself as an upcoming author/speaker?

Thanks a lot, and sorry if this was stupid,

- Paul

1 - You can always delete their junk and ban their page.
2 - Update your status 1-2 times per day - that only takes a few minutes.
3 - Post links back to your site or blog or a new video you made. It doesn't have to be Facebook only content.

If you don't like Facebook though, you don't HAVE to use it. There are millions of tools, sites, methods, etc. and you don't have to apply every single one to your business if it is not something you like to do or think will be effective in your market.

      Thanks, Jenn.

Not sure if I don't like it as much as I don't like the fear of it. Just newbie anxiety, I guess, and not wanting to create more bumps in the road than exist already.

I'm sure your insights are relevant and I'll put them to good use!

I know your feelings bro. But you gotta look at it this way. The few bad comments will be shadowed by the good comments which if you are doing good business should be far more than bad comments. You can delete bad comments. Place the content from your sites to your fan page and the info of your fan page on your site do not get overwhelm take it one step at the time and manage your time accordingly

I think that the Facebook "anxiety" which you describe is more widespread than many would think.

I think that there are many IMers, including myself who may be totally comfortable with every facet of online marketing, who somehow feel like Facebook is a venture where we have to be perfect from the onset. I'm starting to learn that those who are more advanced and taking advantage of Facebook are those who got over the apprehension and learned through making mistakes.

Nailed it. It's just too big of a revenue stream to ignore. It's not complicated but can lead to good solid money and leads. Just do it.

I can relate to that. I have a personal Facebook for friends and family and I started a second Facebook account where I just do my promotions. So anything negative that can possibly come from marketing on Facebook will not affect me on a personal level.

Not sure if you are aware but having more than one Facebook account is against their terms of use and they can and will ban any or all of your accounts if they are aware of it. You can have as many Fan pages as you want though.

I had my reservations about Facebook in the beginning. But just like anything else once you get into it you get more comfortable and better at it.

Just take the time to read up on sites/people who are more experienced and follow their strategies and add your own twist. Mashable.com is a great site on social media so you can start there.

Like some other warriors have said feel free to share content from your website/blog, YouTube account, twitter etc. and that will help with the content.

The only thing is that you have to keep yourself up to date as Facebook changes very frequently.

    Good luck.

I love Facebook. Although it can be intimidating, once you get into it, you'll realize how much you were missing. It's such a giant part of the online world now, it's hard not to be in it. And since a lot of people haven't come close to mastering it yet, if you take the time and effort to learn how to do it correctly, you'll stand out from the crowd.

I used to feel the same way awhile back! I bit the bullet and it was a great move for me. Alot of our fears never come to fruition anyways...

If you don't go after it, you're ignoring a giant group of potential clients/customers/etc. You may never reach them any other way than through FB.

I agree, it's really is too widespread to ignore. Maybe you could get a facebook for personal use just to try it out. Then you can find out if you will be able to handle it on a marketing level or not.
