How to protect a video product from pirating

I have a friend with a great video training program who is selling it only via DVD because that is he only way he knows to protect the product from piracy. Is there a way to protect video from theft and sell it via download? Any info on this issue, or guidance to a discussion on this issue, would be great. Thanks

    Hello craigweaver,

You could make a website and a member area. Only mebers who paid for the course can watch the videos.

I think there is a way to place a unique pixel in each video so you know exactly who shared it if you find it shared although I'm not 100% sure how to do it.

One way would be to :

    1) Use Easy Video Player 2, that allows direct connection to Amazon Cloud for video streaming, encrypts the links and also has the feature to lock the videos to be played on his particular site/url only.

    2) Have those videos played from a login membership area using for example Profits Theme or Optimizepress with a Wordpress membership plugin - such as DAP (DigitalAccessPass)

That would make everything as secure as you can in terms of piracy (except from softwares such as Camtasia recording the screen itself, but that could be used from a DVD as well)

    regards,

There is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent piracy..........period.

Microsoft, Apple, Adobe and every other multi billion company in the world have tried and failed.

Accept that its going to happen and build it in to your business model...... A good way to look at it is that those who use pirated stuff are never likely to have purchased the product in the first place.

you can make it difficult. Another product that is used a lot to protect downloads is DL Guard.

      100% incorrect.

There are virtually endless things you can do to prevent piracy. Simply writing here on the WF to ask users is a method of prevent piracy due to you engaging yourself in a learning situation with the intent to prevent piracy is onto itself an actionable item in preventing piracy.

I am going to take a stab and say that perhaps Gary Gomez instead meant to say that it is difficult to guarantee piracy will not occur.

Things you can do to prevent piracy:

      1. Put the video on a direct linkable only account on Youtube.
      2. Put the video on a manually opt-in list of specific Youtube viewers.
      3. Add in value-add material to the video. While this doesn't impact piracy, it gives you the opportunity to generate reveue from the value-add (re: ads) inside your video, should it get pirated. This could be things such as watermarks to a website, header/footer slides with URLs, etc.
      4. Put the video on a website which does flash or HTML5 video streaming utilizing web server session checks, and then establish those sessions via SSL authentication
      5. Utilize Amazon S3 video streaming and authentication services

Those are just a few things off the top of my head. ALL of them will prevent piracy. None of them will guarantee it.

There is only 1 way to guarantee something isn't pirated: Do not create it in the first place.

Thanks everyone. What my friend is concern about is having the program copied in China, let's say, and then resold there, where there is a huge market for this type of product by the way, and getting nothing for it. I must admit that this is a problem for everyone, and just required lots of creativity. I really appreciate the thoughts around making money by somehow including offers within the videos that require going back to the original, or advertising something related. Great stuff. You've given me lots of ideas to think about. The Warrior Forum is so great.

Even with DVD's they can just copy or rip the content from a DVD and share or sell it any way they want.

Dont focus on what ifs and just focus on creating great content and protect yourself the best you can without going overboard and spending too much time on it.

I just did a whole product on this topic because so many people are being ripped off every day!

Heck even the big IM gurus, WSO of the day product owners are being ripped off anywhere from a few minutes to just 24 hours after they launch.

The most important thing is to make sure you create a password protected download page and if you are using amazon s3 to make sure you protect your buckets.

I did a interview with Zane Miller (Hacking YouTube) for my product where we went over how he got hit by a $6,500 bill from amazon for the month because of his s3 bucket not being protected and being shared on the web.

I would suggest creating a members area so only members can watch it. Next, play the video via JW Player (free). For more security, encrypt to code so others won't be able to find out the link to the video even if they look in the source code.

Your friend has some great options here to make it difficult for someone to pirate your friends work, however there is nothing that can be done to make it impossible for someone to pirate your friends work. After all if someone really wanted to pirate you video, all they would have to do is record their computer screen!

Really though, don't be so caught up in preventing piracy that you end up not releasing your product at all!

Piracy will happen, there is NOTHING you can do to guarantee it is never given out online. However, there are less chances of it being shared online if it is being put on DVD.

I've got tons of paid stuff that's been pirated to hell but it doesn't bother me. Fact is, there is nothing you can do about it. Yeah, you can secure it but where there's a will there's a way.

I just watermark everything and focus on what makes you money.
