How do YOU stay motivated?

Hi everyone,

I have been dabbling in the world of making money online for a few years but never really went full steam ahead with it. I only came across these forums a few days ago and am really pleased that I did because there's so much great information from some quite clearly very clever people.

Anyway, the main reason I havn't made money online (as I suspect is the case with most people that don't) is that I can sometimes find it hard to stay motivated and keep slogging away when there isn't a lot being generated in the form of a return.

I have built a few websites, done some nice articles (and done a bit of promotion) and then given up when they're not getting much traffic, when I know deep down that it takes a lot more time and effort to be succesful.

So how do members here stay motivated? It's something I really want to change about myself as I know if I have the motviation, I can be succesful.

One thing I have found helps is the daily quote from Brian Tracy (motivational speaker). That comes through every morning and I feel motivated (on the mornings I remember to have a look!!) but what else do people do that they find really helps them to keep going at it?

    Hello Benjam1n,

I can always see my goals on my desktop. I just wrote my goals into a paint document and put it as my desktop. This keeps me motivated!

Do something you love and the motivation part comes naturally. I love writing so that's where my focus lies. Too bad there's a lot more to marketing than just writing.

So take the stuff you don't love and find someone else to do it. Trade skills. Outsource. Find joint venture partners. Join brainstorming and mastermind groups. There are lots of ways.

And Brian Tracy is a great resourse too along with Jim Rhon, Bob Proctor, Tony Robbins, T. Harv Eker and a bunch of others. Feed your head good stuff and you'll find you absorb it and some of it will actually stick. Good luck.

There are ways to measure success other than money. Every website you make is an achievement in itself, and an accomplishment. Even if you don't make money (or as much as you hoped), you still have endless potential with what you can do with a website. Even at the most basic level it can be used for backlinks to your other sites.

I created a site a few months ago and it's made less than $1 so far. Am I still motivated to work on it when I have other sites earning a much larger and more stable passive income? Yes. I worked hard on it with my partner. It has value in itself as a website with a custom theme and unique content that cost me just reg fee. It's in my partner's design/development portfolio as a great example of what he can do. If I wanted to, I could write a blog entry about its failure, why it hasn't achieved my goals, what I could improve next time. I could sell the theme or use it with future clients or offer it free with my links in.

If I know there are tasks that I need to do, I write them down and make sure I do at least one thing that needs to be done that day. Usually I get more done.

If you do not keep your goals in front of you, but rely on doing stuff whenever you get around to it...guess what? You end up not following through with most things.

So, to stay motivated, you need to be determined to take ACTION on ONE task per day. Remember, achieving success happens in small baby steps.

Plus, I'd say to you that if you have trouble keeping on track with what you're doing, it may mean you just don't have any real interest in those projects. Keep digging deeper for something online that really gets you excited. You need that excitement to get you through all of the tedious tasks that need to be done.

    Hello, everyone.

I stay motivated by making short lists of three goals that I must have accomplished everyday. In doing so, I also have an accountability partner to help keep me on track because I have to report to her what I intend to do that day in the morning, then again at night to say what was done. If I don't have the list completed, she will then question me on why, and usually, they're silly reasons that just make me feel embarrassed. Because of that, it's something I'd rather avoid. I hate disappointing people, anyway, so that's always been a strong motivator for me.

Also, it may sound silly, but another motivation that keeps me going is the fact that I want a flexible schedule, which IM allows you to have, so that I can go to conventions of my favourite show with my best friend. I just love the experience!

No matter what your motivation is, it just has to get you up and at it.

    1) For people who love what they're doing, staying motivated isn't a topic.

    2) Motivation only becomes an issue when you know you have to do something (maybe to get paid, or to have something) that you don't really like (like a dead end job that keeps the food on the table but drains the spirit out of you.)

So what do you do? Well, there's applying simple mind/emotion changing techniques.

A simple thing you can immediately do is daily affirmation like:
"I Love What I'm Doing, I'm very grateful that it brings food on the table, I am happy and satisfied" - if you do it enough times, you eventually embody and believe it.

Another thing you can do is called "Anchoring" - Every time you are about to do a task you don't like, eat something sweet while doing it or think of a funny thought that will make you smile while doing it.

Eventually the task you hate doing will become lighter because your mind will "anchor" or associate it with the happy feeling brought on by either eating something special or remembering a funny thought.

But then again, if you want an immediate and long lasting solution, do something you actually get excited doing.

I have a burning desire not to be broke. :-) Plus, once I made my first sale then had to big pay days, it was something I couldn't ignore, especially once I realized the sheer potential and the fact that all of the crap that society feeds people about going to college and getting a degree is the pathway to being successful -- total BS. The way to be successful is to find your passion, figure out how to turn it into money, and work your butt off.

I also like helping people, working on my own schedule, and being able to make money by doing something that no a lot of people do. It's like being part of a secret club or something. Ya know what I mean?

I totally agree with Travlinguy on this,

The fact that I can make money from writing is enough motivation to make sure I keep on trucking.

Once money starts coming in though, basic greed also helps to stoke the fires of ambition

So many people seem to just want to find how they can make a $300 a day or whatever there magic number is and don't seem interested in whether they might actually enjoy the business they are going to create.

Keep your goals in front of your face and on the forefront of your mind. Every morning before I jump out of bed and before I crawl in bed I visualize what is important in my life and why I a do what I do. But your real problem is that you do not have a big enough "WHY"...if your "WHY"...the reason you are building an Internet empire, is strong enough...you will have plenty of motivation.

    Hey Ben,

I can understand your situation. What I currently do to motivate myself is the following,

    1. I pick a method that I belief will help me make money
    2. I have my daily task to work on - I then go back to the task at the end of the day and update it if I completed it or not, time I took etc. as a reference for future time allocation for it to complete (my kids bought me a Moleskin Weekly Diary, so that helps me to use it daily
    3. I write my goals daily - I've dribble in and out of setting goals, and I finally nailed it down to one specific finance goal that I am currently making progress.
    4. I focus and re-focus on my Why for doing this <-- this is important to help get motivated and will get you going to work on your tasks daily when you have a strong Why, Guaranteed.
    5. I write my journals every 1-2 days on my progress or lack of progress so that I can learn about myself and just get "Altitude" on myself and see the problem from another angle - e.g. when I have some fear about trying out stuff, I told myself to just suspend the fear - this is not easy but helps as I had been writing in my journal that I have fear but when it came to action, and I took it after some procrastination, it was so much easier than the anticipated fear and just plain laughed at myself for wasting time

Lastly, I started a list of shining objects to check out once I've completed my task. This is working so far as I am not distracted from those shining objects

Note, all these steps did not take overnight (at least for me). It took quite a while and the trick is not be afraid to tweak it and make it better for yourself.

I too started with Brian Tracy's daily emails, progressed to Jim Rohn's and many others.

I stay motivated because I have a burning desire to succeed - simple as that.

The big problem for most people is that they come into this industry with false expectations and expect to be making $10K in their second month.

Just like anything in life in takes a lot of hard work and discipline to become successful, and successful people make their own luck.

You really have to have passion and believe in what you are doing as well, because without that it is always going to hard to stay motivated.

Once you realized that you need improvement, you are already doing better than a lot of people.

If you start of your morning in a powerful note, you will not only be more productive during the day, but you will set your entire mindset up for success.

One of the worst things you can do in the morning is watching the news, wasting time with stupid people, reading newspaper, or simply not warming up properly.

Doing affirmations aloud is something that´s highly effective at any given time. If you train your brain to focus on the positive, your brain will have no no other choice but to feel positive. If you fill your brain with negative energy, then this is what you produce out in the world.

Reading inspirational quotes is something that works incredibly well too. It helps connect your mind with your spirit self, therefore you develop new levels of and consciousness.

People that are really successful are people that are spiritually fit, and aware of how they spend their energy.

People that struggle are mostly people that create negative energy.

Starting the morning with drinking lots of water is something that does wonder.

Working out is another thing that you should bring into your morning routine. In the morning you tend to be a lot fitter and fresher than in the evening.

The goal should be to know what your strongest hours are, and what you should do during them.

    Hello,

I have seen that the aspect of doing work online that most people struggle with is staying motivated. I guess that is entirely because of the nature of the work, and the fact that you never get to see the results of your work instantly, and success is not something you can get overnight.

To answer your question now, there are a number of techniques I use to stay motivated when things are not looking so great. The biggest motivation for me is my past. I am sure most of us have at least one moment of triumph in our professional lives. Sometimes it help to just look back to that moment and remember that it is indeed possible to earn money on the internet.

If you're new and you haven't yet made any money, you should read success stories online. They can be a great way to convince you that it is indeed possible when things are looking down and you need motivation.

Another thing you should do is take note of small successes, such as increases in traffic (even if it may not be converting into money). As long as you are seeing some reward for the work you are putting in, you will not stop putting in effort. Big steps result in falls unless they are following small steps!

I won't pretend that I am constantly motivated but I'm definitely ceaseless, and in a paradoxical way I have my unbearable anxiety and depression to thank for that.

It's hardly ideal, but it seems to work. I'd rather be spurred into action by feeling like absolute crap now (even if it kills me) than realise one day, when I'm sat watching television 40 years from now, with a bum ticker and have virtually no capacity for change, that my life's lacked direction, that I've never really had a sense of achievement, that nothing has been deliberate, that I might as well have just been a cabbage.

    That's a good start Benjam1n,

When I first got started I struggled quite a bit with motivation because I was working long hours and not seeing any return. I was able to change all that by getting serious about my goals.

Everyone is motivated differently, but it all boils down to the carrot and stick. Some people call it pain and pleasure others call it gain and fear of loss. The key is to find out what will drive you, using both positive reinforcement and also reflecting on your future if you do not achieve your goals.

What has worked fantastically for me is writing down my goals on an index card and reviewing them daily. I also visualize my goals. I've been doing this now no less than 5x a week for at least 5 minutes a day for the past decade. It's such an ingrained habit now that I just do it.

I have coaching clients in a wide variety of industries and the first thing I always do is get them clarity on what they want. Without a destination, without a goal in mind, without knowing exactly what kind of results you want, you're just setting yourself up for failure. You've got to give both your conscious and subconscious mind something to aim for.

I see a lot questions in this forum such as:

    How do I get traffic?
What's the best autoresponder to use?
If you had $500, how would you invest it?
What's the fastest way to make money?

And so on and so forth. Generally, these questions are asked without the proper end result in mind. The end result is "making money", which is why we are all in business, however, there is seldom mention of any kind of business plan. There is seldom any mention of any initial research done. And then a few weeks or months later, that same person makes a post here that they are "ready to give up."

The end result is not making money. It has to be something that carries emotion to it. It could be having the ability to see their child's recital at any time they want. It could be spending more time with the spouse and newborn. It could be traveling the world and making new friends. It could buying a musical instrument and learning how to play it or join a rock band go to culinary school, etc. Whatever it is that money will get you.

Another thing to keep in mind is perspective. Most businesses in the real world don't make a profit for 5 to 10 years. In some industries it's much longer. For most IMers, you're not going to see any consistent profits for about a year. Why? Because you have to invest in the learning the fundamentals, something that a lot hype would have you believe that you don't need to do because of a "push button" solution or they have access to a secret, insider group, a new WP plug-in, some super secret SEO tactic that will get you on Google in 4.7 seconds flat, etc.

    Blah, blah, blah.

For the most part, it's a lot of noise. One great way to stay motivated to get absolutely clear on what you want! Then seeking out people who are getting the results you want and learn from them. By focusing on what you really want (not money, but what money can do for you), it will help you ignore all the noise out there and keep you from buying the next, shiny new object or toy.

    Good luck,

    RoD

I like to keep it simple in my mind. I want a better life, this is a viable plan to get there, go do it and DON'T QUIT. By doing that, I know that the only real difference between me and the guy making what I want to make or more is the fact that he DIDN'T QUIT. The fact that I am the only one that can change my life and knowing that if I stick to a researched and proven plan then I AM GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL. This helps me keep the mindset simple. You know you want to make more money for whatever reason, and you know this certain method works. Now just get to work and stay the course.

When it all comes down to it the ONLY thing that separates you from the BIG HITTERS in this industry is that they wanted it more and stuck with it. All of which is completely in your control and its so simple but ppl make it more complex by pumping their minds with negative thoughts and excuses.

Ah... sometimes it is difficult to stay focused. Or inspired. Very often I come here - to 'Warrior Forum' for motivation. It helps to read about people failing or succeeding, learn from other people mistakes and get inspired by success of others.

  • For me it's simple. I just say the words "Traffic and Conversions".
I actually wrote a thread on this recently, but I feel this is the key to online marketing, and it reminds me that it is really simple if I just keep focusing on that. So when I lose motivation, or feel a little down, I just remind myself about traffic and conversions.

I think you just need to become a dreamer again. Have passion for what you're doing, this will keep you motivated while working on your projects. Do what it takes to get the job done. Do it, and do it, and do it until you get the job done.

You are correct here. Bills are pretty motivating. I was carrying the letter from my mortgage company for a couple of days to remind me that it is 'Pretty darn important' to make money and pay those bills.

People usually focus on motivating themselves to do the things they need to do. But what has really worked for me is to simply focus on not doing the things that I waste my time doing. I identified my major time killers and essentially stopped allowing myself to do them, with the occasional exception.

When you eliminate the things you waste time on, doing the things you need to do happens naturally. Because you get really bored otherwise.

I've been having a hard time earning a steady income as it comes in waves for me, but I stay motivated by remaining consistent. One of the biggest ways I use to stay motivated, and I am very motivated in making this internet marketing thing work, is I take breaks and play a sport. So, take some time for yourself to exercise or look for an activity you can get excited about doing one or two times a week.

For me, I look forward to playing hockey with a great group of guys once a week. I've found this really takes my mind off of my work, at least for a little while, then I am ready to hit the keyboard again when I get back...well, usually the next day because hockey is a tiring sport...hope this helps!

Simply organising my tasks helps me get them done, I often see a task as daunting, but when I get going on it that feeling disappears and I'm able to get it going!

I use Omnifocus to keep organised, it is quite expensive for a license though, I'm sure you can find a cheaper alternative!

To stay motivated is actually a little bit difficult..Why..? because as human beings we will not possible to highly motivated anytime..For instance, when our adsense account get banned is normal if then our motivation get down..Even we could be frustrated because of it..

And, for me, to stay motivated we must have goal we must achieve..That's number one..If we have a clear goal and we really want to make them comes true so we will get motivated..

Motivation is really quite an individual thing that everyone has
to find a way to activate in some meaningful and effective way.
The best way for me to be motivated in a particular area is to
chose to do those methods and strategies that give me the most
enjoyment and have fairly high payoffs.

When reminded that motivation is only temporary, Zig Zieglar replied, "So is bathing, that's why we recommend doing it daily."

There are umpteen distractions in the world. When you sit down in front of your computer, it is easy to go to a favorite distraction site, saying to yourself, "I will warm up here, and get going with my project (substitute; work, goals, etc.) in a few minutes. Then a few minutes becomes a few hours, and nothing happens with your business.

Knowing this, I designed my blog as a motivational plan. If you visit, I would recommend the article in goals and motivation: Charles. You have to want something like Charles did. Once you do, and you seriously research, set your plan, and do it....nothing will stop you!

Whenever i see my Alexa rankings decreasing day by day... that lets me know that i'm doing something right. So that motivates me, cause i know many sales will come from all the traffic i'm getting. And i don't use traffic exchanges, paid advertising, or fake forum posts. Just keep marketing and believe in the business.

I do have a project that I started that I needed to back-burner a little while that might help you. Check out Motivologymatters dot com. It is a program I am developing for motivation. There are several podcasts out there that will really walk you through a lot of what the program will eventually be. Everything on the site is free right now.

    Hi Benjam1n,

Motivation is definitely the driving force that determines
    how successful you will be.

It's all about creating a massive WHY.

IM is no different to becoming a pro athlete. You can't just
'try' and see if it works.

You have to fully understand why you are prepared to do
    what it takes.

    - Create a list of 20 reasons why you must make this a success?
    - Create a list of what will happen if you don't take action

Then make a Decision. Are you going to do this or not?

    There is no 'I'll try'

    Yes or No

If no then move on and stop wasting your time.

If yes. Get a coach and hit it 110% for a year. You will be
very surprised with what you can do in a year.

    Hope this helps.

Staying motivated has never really been an easy task for me, but there are some things I like to do in order to stay as motivated as possible:

    1. Keep as organized as humanly possible. If I have excess clutter on my desk, I'll usually just say "well that looks like a long day" and I'll just leave the room and won't get anything done that day. Keeping papers filed and other things in line helps me know what I need to get done.

    2. Work out every single day. Each morning, I wake up around 4AM to run on the treadmill and lift weight. Pull ups, push ups, ab workouts, etc. Having the feeling of being fit and healthy definitely keeps me more active and productive while working versus feeling fat, lazy, and tired.

    3. Read books by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki. Regardless of what you may think of these two guys, their books contain a gigantic wealth of knowledge that is essential to any entrepreneur. Their words and stories of their successes only motivate me further.

    4. Set goals and write them on a huge poster board...then tape the poster board to the ceiling right above your bed. Each morning, I wake up and see this poster board with all my goals. Laying in bed thinking about each one of them and their profit potential is certainly a motivating factor...until the poster board falls on your face in the middle of the night.

I have a personal morning ritual that I do every day. if you turn something that works for you into a habit you will get more things done. I don`t do time management stuff I do my morning ritual and them I make my list of priorities that need to be done. I do 6 tasks every day.

I made a video about how to start a morning ritual and a high performance during the day. I hope this helps.

I think it's all about the journey and learning curve. I lost motivation after one or two of my first projects didn't gather the traffic I required, and got a slap from Google.

The one thing I did was try to think out of the box. Outside Adsense and saturated affiliates like Commision Junction and Amazon. I've got a new idea that is unique and focused in a market that is not saturated, and more direct with the supplier.

I still make a small amount of money from my affiliate sites but the reality is it would just be paying off the money I invested in to hosting/domain names etc.

I stay motivated by focus on the potential realities if I make success happen, and also I think about how giving up (losing all motivation) will likely result in failure (so then I think about the negative downsides of failure). That usually keeps me motivated I've found... for better or for worse. Lolol.
