What did the giants look like?

I hope this is encouraging and is a great thing to look at from a marketing point of view.

This is what the great giant sites looked like when they started.

What the World

What do you think?

    Great post, thanks!

    "thefacebook" ...ROLF.

I just can't believe that even back then it got so far as going online without somebody realizing that "the" should be dropped leaving only "facebook".

    Oh well...better late than never!

god I feel old looking at those. I was at Uni when web 1.0 was kicking off. The novelty factor of having an email address? sigh, I remember those days :-)

Love the wayback machine! As the old saying goes: You won't know where you're going unless you know where you've been.

Also a good reminder that our footprints online are not in sand.

      Thanks for the flashback Quentin!

Amazing to see them. The only one that still looks pretty much the same is Google.

would have been nice to see the search results page from Google though, as I suspect that has changed hugely. As has the top navigation bar on all their sites.

Lesson for me is that perfectionism is a business killer. Lot of sites that slay the business now (and then) don't look like much when looking back. 2 things... First, go with what you've got and improve it as time goes on. Second, practically ALL sites WILL change over time, not just as tastes change and knowledge grows, but also as technology and options improve.

Sometimes I think that maybe I should wait for some doodad to improve or I get some technology just right or whatever. The time is NOW. I try to let the future take care of itself.
