There is no way to create your own awesome WP theme from scratch without coding (at least HTML/CSS/jQuery) AND design skills. It is a true art, which is why there are so many ugly themes out there.

There's a package called Artisteer, which is a theme developer, but it depends on what you want to do with the theme - i.e. is it for sale or just for your own use?

If it's for your own use another route would be to buy one of the premium themes (frameworks) like Thesis or Genesis and create your own design on that.

The benefit of basing your theme on a framework is that the underlying code is rock solid and updates are issued to address security concerns or offer new functionality, but they also enable you to create your own design from scratch if you want to.

+1 for Thesis. I have yet to find a better wordpress theme.

I also want to fly a Jumbo jet with no pilot experience and if you know of a software/app that would help (preferably, free!) it would be great... because I am tired of sitting on those tight narrow seats, so I want to be comfortable in the pilot seat (and somebody told me those chairs have a built-in blowjob mechanism, too)

Probably the best, easiest and quickest way to do so is work with a graphics person that is at least familiar with creating psd's for wordpress and joomla themes pay them well because they can do some serious magic when it comes to themes.

Then do a search on big g for psd to wordpress theme. There are sites that will allow you to upload ur psd file and will spit out a WP theme.
