I have no idea why, and even though I know it doesn't mean much and it constantly frustrates the hell out of me, I'm addicted to Alexa rankings and can't figure out for the life of me how it works and how to increase it.

Even though my traffic has shot up, the Alexa Ranking don't show anything. It's super frustrating.

I cannot blame you. Alexa is hot!!

    Oh, you mean Alexa.com...

Don't over worry yourself about that website. It has its value, but search is not its value!!

Alex rankings can be manipulated because I knew a web programmer that could rank the heck out of his websites on Alexa.

I love it when people brag about their Alexa rankings.

It can easily pull you in and get you sidetracked but you do need to try and stick with more productive tasks or will just end up wasting time looking at stats.

Same for analytics. It's interesting but not something you should spend hours studying when you could be taking action.

I think Analytics has a lot more merit though. Alexa is almost fictitious in comparison. When I installed the Alexa addon for Chrome I dropped half a million in ranking in a week. I wasn't trying to manipulate the stats, just doing a lot of back-end work on the site and some front end testing. During that time analytics didn't an above average increase in traffic as my analytics are set to ignore my ipaddress.

Your competition might not have good traffic you might just think they have. I saw a few listings a couple of days ago on fiverr of people offering to improve your ranking!!!!

On a funny note to give everyone a giggle this morning I met someone at a function recently and they had an alexa rank of 400,000 and they thought it meant thats how many visitors they get per month to their site.

And he didn't believe me when I tried to put him out of his misery!!!!

I would assume that if you can get above 10,000 it would have value. I would not base the popularity of your site by it.
