Can anybody explain to me (and eveyone) why people hack. See my story

Hey gang,

It's Robert X ,, or (Robert Cottom, X is a stage name and X because I was scammed for 25 G's,, yes,, u read that correctly)

Anyway,, I had 7 sites hacked recently,, all 7 because I had 6 add ons to my root domain. I had 5 affiliate sites in various niches and my personal Warrior Sydicate site and a 28 page video training course (for a WSO) that I was nearly finished with and getting ready to list it as a WSO.

I had spent uncountable hours on them all and hundreds, if not thousands of $$ building each and every one of these. And,,,,,, the other day,I went to put the finishing touches on my video course and to my dismay,, discovered that my site was putting up an Egyption page that said "hey, you've been hacked" by so and so from Egypt. They even had an email and facebook page listed. I was too "afraid" to check the links for risks of other possible hakings that might do some real damage to maybe my bank account or something like that.

Anyway,, all my sites were destroyed and no way to recover any content or anything. Just gone. Bye Bye, That's all , folks. No,, I didn't have any back up. Nor did my hosting company (oops)

So, now I have to spend countless hours again, rebuilding my sites, mainly the WSO I was almost finished with. I still at least have all the videos. (whew)

So,, my question is,, what's the point? I don't get it. Some Egyption assbag just decided to hack me off and just destroy everything for absolutely no reason? I mean seriously,, all they left was a stupid page that bragged how they hacked me,, how stupid and pointless.

What do hackers that simply destroy have to gain? Hey hackin' assbags!! Put your talent to some GOOD use and maybe you can turn your destruction around, create something, and maybe make some money at it. And maybe you can go outside,, make some friends,,, and,,, if you ask me nicely,, I will describe to you what a vagina feels like,,,, but only if you ask nicely.

Hackers suck big hairy ones!

Robert X,,,,,,, or Cottom,,,, whatever

p.s. don't bother going to the link below,,it was hack 'a' dackoried

I'm no computer expert but my Dad is one of the people I know who closest to one and I guess I'll just paraphrase what he always says to me about these people.

People hack for the same reason people create viruses: they're criminals. And like all criminals, some do it for money, others do it for, in the words of juvenile hackers themselves, 'for the lulz'.

If we're talking about people who don't do it for money, well I can only tell you I know a lot of guys who'd do a lot to fuel their bloated egos. These people are the same (if not, I can at least tell you that they belong to the same internet subculture). These are probably even worse than the ones who do it for cash.

You just can't reason with these people. Morality. Ethics. They don't mean anything to them when compared to their precious "Big A" (attitude). You can tell it makes me sick as much as you.

Well, that's how I see it. From my experience (both on the internet and in real life), you'd be shocked at the things some people say and do to fuel their arrogance.

You don't take back ups? I guess you will start.

You weren't specifically targeted. It was just a mass hack attempt... maybe for ego, notoriety, a test to prove themselves in inner circles. Don't take it personally, but just make sure you back up your stuff.

Ey man, sorry to hear about that...

    Its always a b*tch.

I dont understand why people just hack stuff for no apparent reason, like with what happened to you. I can see the view point where they hack your system and install a virus scanning software and convince you to buy it in order to fix the virus on your computer, which never really gets fixed and just keeps charging you money. Thats kind of genius in a sense.

Or perhaps the type of virus hack from Office Space where it takes all the rounded cents from each dollar, literally like 10ths of a cent, over millions of accounts, and deposits them into your account. Again, a stroke of brilliance.

But to just hack and destroy?

I dont get it man, if you're that good (which hacking a WP site isnt really that good at all) then why not learn how to add some value to the world and improve the lives of others?

Maybe one day they will learn...

Anything I can do to help you out man?

    Seriously, I feel your pain.

What are they thinking about? 10 of my sites were hacked by some Kuwait dude, and left a page to bragg about. COOL STORY, no one cares how good you guys are - rather, why don't you put it into a good way and make some money?

    Useless.

Luckily, I only had to replace back all my index pages.

How were your sites made? Html or WP? I hear if the permissions are set wrong like 777 any one can hack into your site.

I was told this. "Word Press sites are easily hacked than sites created using Html."

I understand your pain, however your bizarre threats make it appear as if you just want to use your experience as a reason to spew racist statements. If that's your regular attitude, it might explain why you got hacked. Hackers don't hack for the hell of it. They have reasons, and some of those reasons are noble.

Do you believe in Santa Claus too? They have reasons alright, most of them stupid.

Plenty of(if not most) hackers do hack for the hell of it. Disagreeing with someone isn't grounds for hacking, no matter what lame "noble" excuse they dream up to justify their actions.

About a year ago I had 20 of my websites hacked into. The hacker changed all of the index.html files for each site to a picture of a Turkish flag and some obscenity bragging about his hack job.

Thankfully, I caught it the same day it happened and had backups in place. My hosting company says this happens all the time to people's sites, in many cases it can take weeks before people realize what happened to their sites. Think about the damage that can do to your search engine rankings! I check my sites every day now, because you never know when a hacker will try to screw you next.

Here's a tip, NEVER use FTP to upload your site pages to your hosting account because FTP sends your username and password in clear text across the Internet. Always use SFTP to be on the safe side. It's easy to setup, you're asking to be hacked if you don't.

While nothing is impenetrable from hackers, there's a lot you can do to make your business more secure. I've always thought if do whatever I can to make it harder for the hackers to mess with my business they will move onto someone else.

Sorry to hear it man, but the way I see it its almost a rite of passage in the world of IM

"You ain't no one until you get your sites hacked"

I had a couple of my money sites get hacked (back door in the software according the ever helpful tech people at Hostgator)

Re-installed my sites, petitioned Google who had black listed my sites (they were actually very good and re-ranked them within 24 hrs) added patches to the back doors that they probably got in.

A year later someone had hacked one of my sites - this time the head of online security for Citi Bank called my home - since it was some sort of malicious worm into their bank. I was more concerned that they didn't think it was me that had done it (luckily they knew it wasn't me) but it was a scary time. As always the Hostgator guys were a huge help - I think I would have lost my mind other wise.

Like someone said above some of the hackers do it, just to do it and build a name for themselves in the hacking world - others do it for the money.

Either way they are all scum and I hope they all go to jail for their crimes. If not it will catch up with them one way or another.

Whatever the reason this person attacked you is, all you can do right now it seems is learn from it and take precautions to ensure that you can restore any future damage, i.e. backup your work. I guess I don't need to tell you that at this stage though!

There aren't actually a whole lot of different reasons to destroy someone else's success. Jealousy is a big one. Too many people get angry at others due to jealousy of their success. When you're doing well for yourself, others want what you have. They can't handle it and have to do damage to feel better. When people hack for this reason, I think they have convinced themselves that they're doing it because it's cool or funny or impressive. It's clearly not.

What ERPLeadsWriter said is very true. Hackers, like the one that hacked you, do not have healthy morals and ethics. They remind me of racist YouTube commenters. They are incredibly depraved, and while they're sat behind their keyboards acting like they're higher than everyone else, they are in fact incapable of actually fitting into society. It's pretty tragic really.

Jeez, that's a big blow. Glad to hear you're taking it on the chin and re-building -- a lot of people would just give up.

One of my sites was hacked a couple of years ago. They didn't delete anything -- instead they added malicious code that attempted to infect visitors with a virus/trojan of some kind.

I only realized it was happening when my site was displayed with a warning on Google's results. Hired a guy to fix it and it was sorted in no time. Then I changed all my hosting passwords.

I think most hackers are motivated by ego. They hang around in forums boasting of their latest 'achievement'. They have absolutely no interest in the consequences of their actions. Many of them see themselves as some sort of rebel warriors kicking against the machine. The reality is, the majority of their victims are just ordinary folk.

Anyway, good luck getting everything back together -- and don't forget to back it all up :-)

I consider these hackers as among of the most pathetic people here on earth. Why? it's because they are not normal people at least in my own opinion.

Once they could hack a website, they make it as their achievement.

Well, this is simply the reality. There will always be a good and evil.

A lesson that is truly worth learning, backing up is vital.

    Good luck to you, mate.

    Control over your life.

When a hacker deletes all your stuff, you have to go put it all back.

In fact, you will probably waste a lot of your time and energy trying to keep hackers out of your system in the future, too.

That's what they want. They can't create anything of any real value themselves, so they're angry at people who can, and actively try to waste those people's time.

No offense but the only people who consider this sort of hacking 'noble' either live out their social lives on 4chan or are members of Anonymous. Honestly, does that sound like a respectable crowd to you? I'll be generous, how about respectable for just 80% or 60% of the time?

Shooting a robber that just hit your store. That's noble.
Rescuing a kid from a fire (even just to look like a hero), that is still noble.

Destroying a business website for revenge against alleged 'racism'? That either falls under petty or juvenile but certainly NOT noble.

In my research, I've discovered hackers generally hack for a cause that the general public might be unaware of. Prior to AOL's fall, for example, (and I'm talking about the online service, not the site), hackers tore into their forums as a revolt against the child porn that sat in their file libraries and chatrooms for years, despite multiple complaints.

Another example I can remember is when a security website, so confident it couldn't be hacked into, ran nationwide commercials for its personal information bank. It literally dared people to give them their social security number while using its 'non-hackability' as a selling point.

That service got a lot of attention and customers...

...until it got hacked into. That little scenario taught a portion of the public a very important lesson.

        But are these examples noble?

        I don't know.

Maybe we should ask the victims of sexual abuse and identity theft.

Look as much as I am sympathetic towards ideals of vigilante justice, internet hacktivism like this actually insults those ideals.

You're forgetting that hackers hide under the guise of collective anonymity. It's one thing for me to get rescued by a masked super hero/heroine and another to be 'saved' by a bunch of nerds I can't even see and whose shady activity is invisible to anyone who doesn't have an advanced degree in both IT and CS.

I guess what I'm trying to say is as long as they're hiding behind their monitors, you shouldn't expect folks to trust them or like them.

Besides, I must repeat that I hang around guys who (at least) belong to the same subculture and attend the same internet boards as these folks. Trust me when I say that even Jack Sparrow's moral compass points closer to north than theirs.

Sorry, I didn't catch that part. Nevertheless, I'm not sure you (nor I) are qualified to determine what a noble reaction to racism is. Racism can imply so many things to different people. To some, it's a reason to ignore another. To others, it's a reason to call for Jihad.

The best advice I can recommend to anyone who's running an online service is to be as professional as you can imagine what that word means. Don't spread lies, or hate, or curses upon one's mother's mouth. Hate begets hate. But goodwill and respect is an ROI worth buying into.

What kind of host doesn't have backups? I thought that was a pretty basic feature.

You should have had backups yourself as well, especially for sites which you are heavily invested and/or bring in revenue, so that just in case all the backups that the host had don't work or are also hacked, you can upload the sites yourself.

I make periodic backups for my most important sites, and leave a copy on the server, and also download a copy to my hard drive, then send a copy to my portable hard drive as well.

I had several sites hacked recently, but my host took care of restoring them for me.

Yeah I know what you mean, these pieces of crap are really unbelievable. Why on earth would they want to hack a small website, it seems to me that they would go after a large network where they could make a lot of money

It just goes to show you that there are really some lowlife slime balls running around out there.

        Hi Robert
It really sad to listen that.I just suggest you have to get back your precious time by finding those hackers.Try to consult your hosting company and get the IP of that person and in what time he log in your hosting panel. You can also find his machine address.Do not take it easy.It is a serious offense and you have to get him back.

Most of us with a bunch of sites have been hacked at some point. Most of the hackers like you described have the same motives that cause a kid to graffiti on a wall. It's a thrill for them because they can. Like a status.

Most of the time, the damage is minimal, but annoying.

You can take some simple steps to reduce the likelihood of being hacked and by all means, always back up your major projects. Surely you had some of the stuff on your hard drive???

    Sorry that happened to you.

    Egyptian? Sandy basta*ds.

Do daily automated back-up, reliable hosting and keep your webs up-to-date, then laugh into their faces, while they try to hack again and fail. You get the money, they only get a sad face. That's win-win scenario to me.

    Good luck with that.

A few months ago one of my AdSense sites was hacked. The funny part is that it was only making a few dollars per month. The downside is that my whole web hosting was suspended due to the hacking and all other sites on that account were lost as well.

I am also suspicious that they were not specifically targeting my site. Don't know if it is because my host's vulnerability.

Let me say thank you to everyone personally,, Thank you all.

Now,, this has been great for the healing and learning process for me and I hope that maybe newbies get something outta this too,, or anybody for that matter.
Remember to back up your shi*! Lesson learned.

    Hackers = 1
    Rob X = 0

But lets get back to this "arguement". Actually, I don't know where the arguement part started. I guess I offended someone by saying mean things.

    I said in response to relies;
I hope a Pyramid falls on their head.
I hope their moms get aids to the mouth. (and die slowly)
And I said another guys hacker and mine should get together and butt hack each other.

Now,,, where is the racism? And who the hell turned this into a race thing anyway. I mean,, it's clearly an aids issue, (sheesh,, get it right) and a Pyramid issue,, or is it a butt thing? You funny guys,,,, saying i'm obsessed with the butt thing,,, funny,, and I thank you for being funny!

That's what I was trying to do,,, be funny! To relieve my heartache and let my brain take a break from thinking how I'd love to get my hands on that assbag,, or,, assbags. Like I said,, I don't care about who did it,, what country or nationality,,, it's a worldwide hacker thing. No country, or race. They are one. One big giant group of assy douchebags. Maybe we should invent a new nationality called Douchebaggery.

And throw all the hackers, from all around the world, into this new country. It can be located in Antartica,, being they don't go outside anyway, so, the cold won't really bother them. Then,, we can be racist against Douchebags from Douchebaggery. My new mythical place that doesn't even exist,, but I'm sure Mr. Racecardplayer will say I'm a racist,,,, haha. I'm making myself laugh as I write this BS.

Ok,, ok,, I'll stop being crazy,,, I only wanted to say that I learned a valuable lesson here,, and that lesson is to watch out what you say here when you're just trying to be a little funny. Man,, some people will take it in a WHOLE different direction.

Oh,, and I learned that you should back up your stuff,,, haha.

p.s. Can't we all just get along?

Thank you all for your love and support. I love you all,,, Even Mr. Racecardplayer,

Gosh,, can't ya just feel all the love?

nm5419 was the one that brought the race card out.

however your bizarre threats make it appear as if you just want to use your experience as a reason to spew racist statements. If that's your regular attitude, it might explain why you got hacked.
He was the only one that thought that though Robert.

Entertaining thread in my book, sorry you got hacked too, definately back up in future.

I don't know why everyone always ends up picking on Antartica and wanting to send hackers there. It's just wrong. Antartica is the most wonderful place on earth and frankly Antarticans just deserve better from you. I'm reporting this thread as abusive to Antartica and Antarticans everywhere.

Oh...and by the way. Antarticans do go out. There's sleading... and pinguin chasing... and an outdoor sport called "stick your tounge to the iceburg"....

Why can't everyone stop picking on Antartica???????

I think most people is misunderstanding with the two words:hacker, cracker. They are all great people who know pc and hacking technology well.BUt as i know, the hacker is good to help people to resolve the problems and protect the safety of the computer. But the cracker is bad who always destory our system and steal our pc secret, please do the backups well if you want to protect your project well.

How people get satisfaction out of destroying other people's websites blow my mind. I don't understand why hackers spend their entire days trying to ruing people's lives.

Backing your sites up is very important.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible that it happened to you and that you had no backup. It's stories like these that make me always regularly backup my sites. It's just that one time that you think "There's a whole internet full of millions of sites, who would go after mine?" that you end up getting hacked. I guess it just comes with the territory.

Look at this way, this hacking will prevent you from being badly affected by future hacking attempts since you'll surely start using backups.
