Where do you go to find freelance work?

As a freelancer, I'm curious to know where some of you other freelancers to go to pick up work. I currently only use Elance at the moment and was wondering if you guys use and have had success with other portals?

Elancer, ODesk and Guru have WAY too much competition IMHO. I much prefer right here on the WF and VWorker. I've also picked up a few gigs off Craigslist which were good.

I've found some gems in the warrior for hire section. Other than that the usual places that I'll check out are odesk, guru, elance and sometimes even fiverr.

I know all the places but another thing is to get
work there without giving away your work.

I find people who are interested but they are
also looking for a "deal" which I cannot give.

It's a race for the bottom price and I've been
told by a few interested prospect that I was
in the wrong place. Go figure.

Maybe other people know the tricks to getting
decent paying jobs apart from underbidding
    the competition. I'm all ears.

I can only speak as an employer - I've hired 20+ people on oDesk - it's not perfect but it's by far my favorite - better than Elance, Scriptlance, etc...

If you're looking for North American wages though you'l have to be offering exceptionally fantastic service, otherwise you'll easily be outbid by people from 3rd world countries who also have great skills. I think you'll find the same thing on most freelancing/outsourcing sites.

I used craigslist the one time I ever tried it. It worked ok. It's not something I'd necessarily be running out to do again but hey I got paid.

I'd give the Warriors for Hire section here a shot. There's a lot of activity there and I have used it both for an ad for me and to hire people.

I'm not a marketer, but I do freelance article writing. Find ways to approach authority sites in your niche or small businesses/professionals on your own.

Clients will pay you MUCH More if you approach them. If they have to approach you through many various websites, you'll get paid 1/3 of what your services are really worth.

I've heard you can land high-paying deals on those sites, but it's much more difficult to do so.

I get the bulk of my writing work from Elance and LinkedIn. I find that if I target professionals who are not necessarily in the "IM" world, I get much higher rates. I can write the same article on Elance for $25-50 that someone would want to pay me $2-$3 on Odesk for. I have never had success on Odesk unless I was hiring for something myself.

It really is more about positioning yourself for your own talents and what you bring to the table. Once you figure out what that is for you, then you can command the prices that are on par with your skills.

      Good luck!

It is very likely that you will get underpaid at freelancing websites such as oDesk, Elance and Freelance etc. They are a nice place to start, and you should certainly try and get a feel for the whole thing from there. But seems to me like you already use elance. Depends on what you are looking for - more work or more money?

If its just more work, then stick to where you are. Competition might be stiff, but if you work hard and are happy to cut prices, you will get a lot of good stuff. If you want better prices, you have to get out of there. You won't get many $20ph writing jobs there (I earn more, but consequently, work is less). If you want these, you have to step out and basically send cold-letters to blogs and businesses where you would like to work (write). Also, keep your eyes peeled for random opportunities, you'd be surprised what you might end up with.

Also, be nice to everybody, you never know where the next lead comes from
