So today for the first time since before dinosuars wlked the earth, I logged into my Squidoo account. I've got 14 lenses, but on;y 1 seems to be active. The others are in teh status of WIP (work in progress).

According to Squidoo, these WIP lenses are not indexed for searching through the Squdoo site and are blocked from the Google spider. They are, however, viewable it you go directly to the URL.

My question: is there any benefoit to me doing linkbuilding to those lenses that aren't indexed in Google?

Thanks-

There isn't any value right now. You should get them in the status of being indexed and then start link building again to them.

That's what I was thinking... unfortunately I don't feel like trying to figure out why they are WIPs. When they were built years ago, they worked fine.

Squidoo now classifies anything with a lensrank under 400,000 as a WIP. Such WIP lenses will not be featured in Squidoo's internal search engine.

Lensrank and WIP status, however, have nothing to do with whether the lens is indexed in Google and have no impact on Google search engine rankings.

Your decision to backlink the lens should be based on whether or not the lens has the potential of making money if it were ranked higher in the search engines. If that's the case, it may be worth promoting.

At the very least, if the lens has acquired any page rank since you last checked, it may make a decent backlink for other projects.

    Hi Sojourn,

    Thanks for the thorough reply.

    From Squdoo, relevant section underlined:
    Work in Progress

This red minus sign means your lens is not currently being featured in Squidoo, and is considered a Work-In-Progress (WIP). WIP lenses don't get promoted within Squidoo search results, on profile pages, or to outside search engines. They are still visible via a direct visit, like if you email someone your link or post it on Facebook. We'd really love to promote your lens as often as possible.
This makes me think it DOES have an impact on Google PR and its usefullness as a link layer to my money site(s), in that it without it being indexed by Google, it's no good for using in a link ladder/schema.

Unless they're deliberately adding 'no-index' to those pages, it's hard to see how they can stop Google from treating them as they would any other page.

After all, if you're linking to them -- and they can be visited directly -- why WOULDN'T Google index them?

      Or am I missing something?

You're right. Not sure why I thought otherwise but might have been because my lenses that have slipped to WIP still get traffic. However, I checked a few, brought up Page Source and Squidoo has applied a "noindex" rule search engines on those lenses.

BUT the ones I checked are still indexed in Google and coming up in search engines. I assume this is because Google does not delete them from their index just because the page has changed to "noindex". They must fall out at some point but it looks like it takes awhile.

It usually only takes a day or two of slight editing to bring a lens up from WIP. Depends on how far those lenses have dipped but if you just add a few sentences or maybe a new module of content, republish, and do that again the next day or two, the lenses should come back up above the 400,000 mark at which point they'd get crawled again and you'd be back in business.

Or, you could always take the information down and put it up on a new site. It still comes down to whether or not the content has the potential to make money.

I have a hunch I know why they are WIP.

If you don't have a main picture uploaded in the main module, it's a WIP.

You can't use an image within your HTML, you actually have to use their uploader.

About a year ago, all my lenses became WIP and this was why.

      Hope that's it!

Squidoo tells you what you need to do, they have a score thing on the right when you edit the lens.

If these were built years ago then it'll just be adding a picture to the first module or adding more modules to the lens.

Once you have all the scores up for your lenses head over to fiverr and get a couple people to like them, this will bring your lens rank up.

Visitors, backlinks and likes have the biggest effect on lensrank

You should consider going through each lens and updating it according to what squidoo tells you on the right hand side you need to do to come close to 100% completion - then go a step further and make it better than that. It's worth it, because if the lenses have aged, they may be ready to go.

Plus you never know when you've got a winner on your hand

I'm glad I ran across this thread. I never heard of a published lens becoming a WIP and I thought surely some of my lenses must be over 400,000 in rank. But I just went and looked and my lowest is at 383,xxx in rank -- so it's still sneaking in there. Hmm... maybe I should add something to that lens. I've got 3 that are in the 300K range. Think I'll go add a poll (or something) to each of the ones in the danger zone.

In the beginning I had abandoned my attempts to create Squidoo lenses because I found them too complicated and I didn’t know how to get traffic. When I learned what I needed to, I created a lens explaining the basics to everyone. I did it basically in order to attract traffic from internet marketing to my field.

Learn how to easily create perfect business lenses and get traffic at:

    http://www.squidoo.com/passive-income-website-traffic-squidoo-beginners-guide

Squidoo pays you depending on Tiers, which are based on lensrank. If you have a leans on Tier 1 you get paid $24 for it every month, but this lens must have a lensrank from 1 to 2000. If you have a lens on Tier 2 (lensrank from 2001 to I don’t remember how much…) you get paid around $8 for it, and if your lensrank is higher than 85.000 you are not paid. I don’t remember the numbers exactly right now, but you make money with Squidoo when you create quality lenses and you know how to get traffic. Of course, you make more money when you also sell various affiliate products.

I’m using Squidoo basically to send traffic to my websites, but it also is a passive income.

    All the best!
