I dont know whats going on.

I know my ISP sucks, but this is just getting ridiculous. My Skype works, but nothing else does.

Yahoo Messenger wont sign in, AIM wont sign in, my web browser doesnt even work unless I use a proxy..

I am posting this right now from one of my private proxies. Otherwise I wouldnt be able to connect.. I dont know whats going on man..

Which is strange.. you have to have a good internet connection to connect to a proxy, right??

I've always had problems with my ISP randomly dropping the connection, but for Skype to work and nothing else, that is just weird.. Especially when everything works when I use a proxy..

Thoughts? Suggestions? Should I call the ISP? Reset my modem?? I dont know what to do.. This is the 3rd time this has happened in the past 2 weeks

If you have the option, get another ISP provider.

That sounds funky to me. Yeah, definitely call the ISP on that one. I have FIOS and they have been stellar on the support end when I needed stuff fixed.

As a FIOS support tech (my work-from-home day job), it's nice to hear. All I ever hear are the complaints about how FIOS and Verizon are so horrible. And Monday, I had the WORST call of my nearly 10-year call center career. (And that's saying something!) She was vulgar and profane to the nth degree. I've never heard so much hate.)

OP, definitely check with your ISP. Verizon and AT&T are both very reliable.

Hope you get it worked out!

Oh I am glad. I am really sorry you got ripped a new one though. That is the downside of customer service I'm afraid.

Now if you could just have a word with the marketing dept instead. They are ALWAYS calling me to "upgrade" my TV for a lower price. It's kind of funny when I tell them I get it for free from the antenna on my roof haha :p

There is no other ISP in this city, its pretty much this company or no company at all..

    This really sucks man.

I've had the actual President of the company out to our old house on a service call, just to get them to fix a "node" at the top of the pole.. Its like a big circus act with these people.

Now this.. Which is REALLY weird to me, because its working right now for the browser only because I'm using my proxy.

My AIM/Yahoo! wont sign in, but my skype is online and people are talking to me.. But my skype isnt using the proxy - only my browser..??? LOL wtf..

    I'm really clueless about this..

It could possiblly be a bad DNS. Look for some alternatives close to you to see if that fixes the issue. You will need to at least reboot after changing your DNS.

I would also try another device/computer on the same network to make sure it isn't just your computer. I't could also be your router... but try new DNS first.

Thnx frag, my PS3 says DNS error when I try to connect so thats probably the problem.

Im not really sure how to change the DNS though.. I think its done in the router configuration, but I dont want to mess anything up even worse. LOL!

And it just started working, my AIM & Yahoo signed in so I think its back up.. I'll disable the proxy on the browser & see if it loads a page. Thats just really weird though..

Did you power off your modem and router?

This sometimes helps. Maybe not in your case but worth a try.

you might have a virus go to msconfig in your start menu and turn on "Normal Start Up" under general and click ok. restart your system and see if your internet is working again.

Try download a free trial of Kasperky internet security & scan your system. If your other devices (which are not connected to your computer) are having issues too then its probably your isp.

i suppose you have tried the "repair internet connection" function or "network trouble shooting" options depending on what operating system you are using.

most browsers also have some connection settings you can play with. sometimes these get changed when you get spyware stuff on your cpu, but you did mention your ps3 is having a similar problem, so thats not likely your problem.

it does sound like either an isp or a router problem, but it may be hard to tell which one.

depending on your router type, you could try typing in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 into your browser. that will get into the "admin" area of most routers. from there you should be able to find a "reset" feature that you could try without risking screwing things up.

Not a virus, I have a 80 year subscription for NIS (friend of mine works at Symantec)

And it seems to be working now..

I dunno what could have caused it though.

I know someone just up the road from you, who this happens to, just as you described.

He has to turn off his modem, disconnect the cable from the modem, then also reboot his router to get his internet working again.
