Anybody feel like giving up...

Has anyone ever given up or hit that low point where you think things are going nowhere with your internet marketing business?

I am not giving up. But for my blog, I definitely feel aimless. Trying to find what works seems to make things worse, for some reason.

Just want to know of anyone's experiences here and how they overcame it.

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.

This is an awesome sentence right here. I was about a year and a half into my business and was averaging right around $300 per month. I basically thought that was as good as it was going to get. then I took the plunge and got into list building. That was a little more than a year ago. This month I am going to have my best month and I am at a clip to make about $5200! Granted, it's still not where I want to be, but when I look back at where I was, I feel pretty good.

Bottom line - Never give up, and never stop learning and researching news ways to make money. If you aren't building a list, start building one. Once you get going, you'll find that it's really not that hard after all.

All of the traditional things that are supposed to make you a lot of money like blogging and article marketing, social media, etc, did nothing for me. It wasn't until I strated buying and selling solos and doing list & download page swaps that I really started to make money.

You have to find yourself a profitable niche and stick to it. For me, it was niche blogs & websites. Not building them and running them, but selling themes, templates, and plugins.

Come up with a follwo up sttartegy for your chosen niche, and market those products to your list. For example, I give away a blogging tutorial and some WP blog themes in exchange for subscribers. Then, I can market products like PLR niche blogs, plugins, and other blogging tutorials to them.

There are literally hundreds of great niches like that. IM is a good niche, and there's alot of money in it, but it's very competitive. I tried that, and it was only by chance that I came across the blogging niche.

I'm sure if you continue to try and don't give up, you are going to achieve success.

I can't even tell you how many times I have given up -- mostly because life gets in my way and I just bog down. I know I shouldn't do this but I do.

What works for me (because I like learning and truly believe that learning is accomplishing) is to search out an area in which I am weak and set out to learn.

I am an organization freak. I have an incredible amount of information on my hard drive dedicated to IM. I explore and retreat into my climb up that darn learning curve and before I know it, I am back on track.

Yes, definitely. There are so many times that I felt like giving up. but when I see that I'm earning money online, that keeps me going. It means that I'm doing something right.

Nobody likes hard work, including me. But IM business requires hard work. Just keep at it & rinse & repeat what's working. You'll be fine.

Yes, I definitely know how you feel. Trust me, you're not alone. Luckily, this forum is a great motivator and source of ideas.

BTW, your blog is really interesting. I'm not sure how you monetize though, so you may want to try different things.

I'm sure everyone has had the same feelings. I know I have. Just keep at it and take pride and find motivation in every small achievement. When you make a few bucks or get a new subscriber or come up with a great idea...Feed off that. Think about your desired outcome and how great it will be when you reach it.

Life is a cycle. Even the most intelligent, most successful, and ever respected person on Earth, I know, have experienced this much stress. As an internet marketer, I had the same kind of experience that you're having right now and what I did was: I believed in myself that I CAN. It's just within yourself where you can ever find hope. Cheer up!

I've been there a bunch of times. I just had to work through it. I looked at it like this: I could either do nothing and stay in the same position I was or do something to change it. I also had a burning desire not to be broke and like the idea of having skills not many others to that put me in control of my financial future.

I also learned that once I had set everything up properly, making money from my blog was all about traffic, which came from pushing out more content. I mean, I already knew I could write and stuff because I tried stuff out on free sites like Squidoo and Hubpages. Traffic was the thing that transformed my earnings.

More recently, my traffic and conversions have shot up, due to all the algorithm changes. I don't have to hunt for backlinks or anything anymore because I get them naturally. The even cooler thing is that they come from places I didn't know existed and those with high page and Alexa rankings. I can publish an article or review, and it gets traffic in no time. Don't give up! It gets better and is totally worth it!

Don't feel desperate. Take it one step at a time. One foot in front of the other. Just keep moving forward and don't look back. In other words, keep learning, keep trying, and keep moving forward.

I know it can be frustrating at times but I've found success in being persistent and having a goal. I know those WSO's and ads are really appealing and make you think and dream about how it would be like to have a life like that - but most of the time they can be really disappointing when things don't turn out the way you thought they would.

It took me 3 years to earn my first $100 from Google adsense -until I finally got the hang of it and once I did, everything changed again. I wrote an info product ebook and gave it away for free. I built a list of 300+ in a month and reached a thousand in a few more months - but i didn't know what to do after that and lost my list. Even forgot to pay iContact and got my account cancelled.

Internet Marketing is a very hard profession. Not everyone makes it. People selling WSO's only make money form selling WSO's. Sometimes they don't even practice what they preach. My point is, find your own way. Learn from your own mistakes and learn to trust the right people.

Learn, and apply it from your point of view. Write an info product ebook, spend some time on it and make it worthwhile to read. Be genuine and people will know you and like you. Then create something else and then sell it. You'll be surprised.

    Hope this helps,
    Artemis

Of course. MOST of the people here have thought to give up even just for once. But look what they did. They worked hard. And look at them now. They are successful and financially stable. So, no matter how many times you think of quitting, don't do it/ It's all in the mind.

Im currently 1 1/2 months into IM and i feel like giving up, working on 3 Niche websites with 2 painfully sitting in the second page in google for keywords - no matter what im doing they just aint shifting to second place. I feel like dropping it all because it just feels like im churning out 1,000+ word articles for nothing, then IF i get to the front page of google, there is no guarantee I will be making anything worth my invested time - so yes, i do feel like quitting.

Will i quit though is a totally different matter, the only person i have to blame at my lack of success is me. Maybe these 3 nitch sites will fail - but I would probably open another 3 nitch sites, im desperate so im willing to throw everything i have to succeed in this game - working from home is my dream and more importantly the entire idea of making money online excites me.

I think that is why it is so important that when you have a blog, it has to be something that you are passionate about. Otherwise it is too easy to lose interest. If it is your hobby or passion, it is much less likely that you will lose interest, no matter if you are making money or not.

I started 3 years ago. I made a few small sites, and put Adsense on them. After a couple of months, I managed to make my first $100. Fast forward to 6 months ago, I was in the mid XXXX. 1 month later, Panda hit me. 80% of my 100 sites were in the top 10, and after one of those Pandas only 10% remained. My income went BOOM... but I was still making some. A month later, my Adsense account was banned for no reason.

100 sites could be the reason for your account getting banned. 100 sites to me would suggest MFA. Google only wants quality sites these days.

I've been making money online now since 1997, and have had glorious years and lousy years and amazingly enough, the last 2 months has result in finally *everything* clicking.

My secret to success is simple, and it leverages my unique talent:

Create quick easy reports at under 40+ pages, start them as a dimesale, provide great customer care, build my list and promote as needed.

That uses my skill (quick product creation).

What are *your* skills that you can leverage?

    Do you sell well?

    Do you talk well?

    Do you make deals well?

    Can you drive traffic well?

Do you want to become an authority blogger?

    etc.etc.etc.

Do NOT do what everyone else does....because you have no idea if that works for you!

Find what you do *well* (and ideally enjoy too)...and then see how to monetize *that*.

Never follow the gurus. Always follow what works for *you*.

We all have our moments and to be honest xmas is just around the corner - have a break over christmas and return bright and fresh and full of new ideas in the new year.

I haven't had a bad day like that for a while - though what normally puts me in that mood is when my laptop decides to crash on me or I don't get a decent click through on a new solo advert that I have paid for.

Interesting post; l have a successful product that took me about 4 years of hitting a brick wall to get together amongst several dead ends, etc.

The interesting thing is a recent video showed what l suspected about free traffic and paid. In that free traffic from developing a website or blogs, etc is that only about 7 to 12% of people who try it succeed, (make a profit from adsence, etc) and the vast majority hit their heads against a brick wall.

Paid traffic has similar results, as it takes time to figure out how to create a clickbank type campaign, sales video, etc. I created the best product l could come up with after thorough research, and campaign that rivals the best Clickbank campaigns out there, (excluding lofty sales stats, because l am still trying to sort out the best traffic source) to create a successful product!

So the point l am trying to make is creating a website, and working hard to get limited results, and reading multiple posts on forums of the successful 10%, tends to play on your mind?

You understandably start to think, that everything is against you, but it is just that the 90% that cant get it to work, Yet, couldn't be bothered putting up a post, since most posts seem to be positive!

The 20 year old making massive sums of cash online is almost becoming a cliche, but if it was the norm, generation Y, would all be internet millionaires?

As others have said, internet marketing is hard, but doable. And the Google-Witch-hunt doesn't help. And average individuals do get there.

Most of the time it is one step forward and two back.

So my best advise from someone who is on the tipping point, between making it online, is don't believe all the SEO free traffic tactics out there. It may work out well for about 10%, but taking luck out of the equation, and Google it could take weeks, months or years to bring in worthwhile results.

Paid traffic to your product, (as l have found) does give you more options, and a greater chance of success. If your first product doesn't convert use it as a bonus for the one that does or give it away with several affiliate links in it.

And it doesn't have to be a Clickbank high quality campaign, a simple site with a graphic or two, and text is enough to convert.

I tend to go overboard with my campaigns, but you don't have to.

So it may take you longer to make it, and many others may fly past you or make it look easy, but dogged-determination, flexibility, ability to think creatively when things look bleak, and refusing to give up, even if you are concerned about your mental health, should get you through the mental barrier or achieve the holy grail, in the end!

      Shane

P.S. l heard from a reputable marketer today that most forms of advertising won't be as effective as they usually are at present, and may take until mid January 2012 to come good, because of Christmas and the holidays. So if something doesn't seem to be working at the moment that could be the reason?

Maybe it's a self esteem issue. I mean, calling yourself a douchebag in your sig. And then the stuff that follows when you click the link.

How big a market do you think there is for this approach? There are some people who might appreciate it but there are MANY more that think it's sleazy and overdone. You say you're about personal development and yet you call yourself a douchebag. Perfect.

Sure, the first person I want to model to feel better about myself is someone who holds himself out as a douchebag. Maybe you need to rethink your approach to marketing and choose a wider target audience. Good luck.

      ^^ This.

Alden, read the above post again. "Douchebag" and "self improvement" are incongruent. And I think it's probably hurting your business.

I kind of have the feeling that you tried to do the "Rich Jerk" thing. The Rich Jerk works because a lot of people secretly believe that rich people ARE jerks. Now think about the way you're branding yourself. Not so congruent, right?

You say you're a douchebag who writes about self development. That's like saying "I'm a deer hunter that writes about veganism." Or, "I'm a pedophile who writes about raising children." Or "I'm a pastor who writes about gambling in Vegas."

      Incongruent. Off putting.

Just something to consider if you're struggling.

Pay attention to whatever he's said.

"Most people quit just a yard shy of success", or so the saying goes. The market it seems you're working in (personal development) is very competitive and it's extremely tough to get any traction.

Having said that, it's not impossible. You need to rethink your positioning and perhaps come up with another angle. I went through some of your content; your site and the marketing angle can definitely do with an overhaul. Take a look at some of the leading blogs in the same market and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Taking a few days off can help too. Stay away from all this for, say, a week or so and when you come back, you'll have a better view of things and what you may need to change. I make it a point to take regular breaks. That gives me more insights into how I can improve whatever I'm doing.

I was going to say just that. Take a few days off, recharge your creativity and come back when you feel inspired again.

I sometimes like to take a break and just check out what other people are doing, watch a couple of webinars etc. This often sparks my brain into life, because I can take what someones doing, re-work it and sometime simprove on it.

Every single successful person in ANY industry has a story of a struggle long before they reached success.

For me personally... I HAD to hit rock bottom BEFORE I finally truly had the motivation to PLOW through the many problem I faced when trying to become successful at building a profitable business online.

It is totally natural to have the feeling of WANTING to give up, but if you give into that want and actually give up for good you will just become aother statistic of this industry.

They say 97% of people fail at business online... That should MOTIVATE you to be in the top 3%. If that statistic is depressing to you and makes you have doubts that you can succeed... you may be in trouble.

This industry will TEST you and teach you a lot about who you really are and what you are willing to endure in order to reach your goals.

On the bright side... if you can hang in there and get through the many learning curves, this can be THE BEST industry in the world.

There have been many times I have felt like giving up, just like everyone else gets at some or many points. You just have to have the determination that you will "do what ever it takes".

Think about your reason "Why" and that will help you push ahead. "Life" gets in the way some times, but you have to just keep plugging away and you WILL GET THERE!

Everyone feels like giving up at some point man.

You have to remind yourself why you are doing your blog, what are you trying to accomplish, and what are you trying to avoid as a result of having a successful blog. The frustration comes as a results of "not knowing what to do."

You have to get out of your head for a moment and see how much you've progressed and see how other people have it worse than you (still not having a blog for example). You are beating yourself up for no reason.

If you think about it, you've got more to lose giving up than not giving up. Just think of the reasons why you got into this in the first place and what you wanted to get away from... That's what gave me the drive to succeed.

Sean Donahoe, a very successful internet marketer said this "People don't fail, they just give up too soon before they see success".

Providing you've got a proven plan of how to make money online, you WILL get there... Just takes time that's all.

I think most people have experienced this to some degree or other at some point. It's certainly happened to me--more than once, in fact.

I overcome it by refocusing on what I know works. Even if "what works" only brings a small success at the moment, I know that I can expand on that success if I put a little more effort into that area. Seeing that little extra success in that one area tends to make me reexamine the thought of giving up and usually lets me get over that little hurdle.

    For sure been there.

I overcame it by doing IM stuff with friends. The competition and help in person really helped me get over it. That and just being able to talk about CTRs and stuff like that in person always kept the gears going in my head.

All I can say is I've read enough times about how success is usually right around the corner from giving up. I've also read many posts on here about how some of the successful marketers tried for months, or years, before they figured out what they needed to in order to become successful.

You're so far ahead of so many since you've actually taken action! When you are actually doing things, you learn first-hand about what works, and what doesn't. Learn from what you do. Try new things and see how they pan out.

Keep reading, posting, and asking questions and, of course, putting what you learn into action, and you will find success before you know it!

I have been doing IM fulltime since 2007. But I can tell you that since then, there have been times that I felt like giving up and going back to a good day job.

I went fulltime in IM when I succeeded in doing PPC with Amazon and it well great for a couple of years, until... Amazon decided to kill off the PPC affiliates. So Amazon closed my account and suddenly my income stream went to zero.

That's when I felt like giving up. It was tough trying to rebuild my income stream from IM. Google Adwords weren't that friendly to affiliate marketers either. So I had to try to re-develop my IM income stream.

It needed persistence and belief. Knowing that I had succeeded before gave me the confidence.

Today, I am happy to say I have not got back to a day job, and am still doing IM fulltime.

Just want to know of anyone's experiences here and how they overcame it.
I started out in 1999 and for the first few months I felt like giving up. I'm glad I didn't as it completely changed my life.

You can read more about it by clicking here.

If you're not making sales then that means you need to get more traffic. If you're getting traffic but not enough sales you need to tweak your conversions.

I've got some questions for you:

    1. Do you have a business plan? What about a rough outline of one?

    2. Who are you targeting? In other words, if you had to describe your perfect customer, what would they be like? Where would they live? What do they earn? What are their hopes, dreams, needs, and wants? (If you can't answer that you're working in the dark).

    3. What 4 things are you consistently doing each day to promote your business (at least 5x a week)?

    4. Are you building a list? If not, what's the reason?

    5. What are your 5 predominant habits? This is critical and I ask this of all my clients because those 5 things will give you a good idea on what's holding you back.

    6. Do you spend time with people that support you?

    7. How many hours of TV do you watch a week? Video games? Hobbies?

    8. Do you set aside specific hours each day at least 3 to 5 days a week to work on your business with as fewest distractions as possible?

    9. How many infoproducts or products have you purchased in the last 3 months? Six months?

    10. Have you written down your 90 day, 180 day, and one year goals?

Of course this happens to most of us, key is continous work on mindset, I find reading/listening to personal development reignites my passion, in fact, I was reading Think & Grow Rich today, and I found myself reading a page I have read before, and today that's when it kinda sink in.

What it is with accumalation of success, according to Napoleon Hill (the author) "The accumulation of great fortunes calls for power and power is acquired through highly organized and inteligently directed specialised knowledge, but that knowledge does not, necessarily, have to be in the possession of the man who accumulates the fortune!"

This made me think? I think if you ponder on those words you will find some clues that lie in there.

Really, giving up shouldn't be an option, no way! You see, these businesses that stand today, they wouldn't have been, if some men and women behind them chose to give up! However they didn't give up, and they are mere people just like you and me, if they made it, why can't I and YOU?

Success is a result of repeated failures, no business was birthed and all of a sudden florished and became a success. I think it's a qiestion of retracing and refocusing, and organizing and inteligently direct the specialised knowledge that you have acuumulated! All that is on your hard drive and what you can now do.

In the same book, there is a story about a man who gave up digging a mine when he was only 30 feet away from striking quality gold, what did he do, I can't quite remember if he sold or just gave it away to someone, and this someone had specialised knowledge, and with not much effort, the person struck the gold, boy how would you feel??

So, I think you got the message already from the so many positive posts, DON'T GIVE UP, winners never quit and quiter never win!

Warrior is a great source of encouragement!

I can't say that I've ever felt like giving up, the early days were tough, but I could see the potential of making money online and a relentless determination to succeed has kept me on track. The biggest problem is finding something that works and once you have found that you really can't go wrong.

From late October 2010 to present was where I really saw some good results with software I'd developed taking over $100,000 in sales. I did quite a bit of freelancing work for $2000 a time and made some great contacts in the industry. I'm currently involved in a couple of joint ventures and I'm expecting some spectacular results in 2012.

I think if you treat your online business the same as you would a traditional bricks and mortar business, starting with a business plan and setting goals, then I really can't see how you can fail. Too many Internet marketers fail I believe because they don't take their business seriously enough, they lack focus and the staying power to pursue a strategy through until they see results.

If you don't do well, then you're not taking your business seriously enough. Another important factor is building relationships with people, I am lucky to have worked with some well-known people in the Internet marketing sphere and it is these contacts who have really helped me on my way.

List building is incredibly important too as you undoubtedly know. I know that I can immediately make a couple of hundred dollars overnight just by sending an offer out to my list, its "on demand" cash, a "Virtual hole in the wall".

So plan, focus and work very hard and you will see results and giving up will be out of the question.

    Cheers

    Rob

this thread is unexpectedly quite popular when people usually prefer to hear fast success stories
gotta admit internet marketing is quite frustrating when your investment does not yield the returns you want
one cruel fact is that what you like, very often, is not easy money maker. Sometimes you need to find the profitable niche and then develop passion in it, but not vice versa

Yes I have felt like giving up, mainly because there is an unethical search engine running my life.

Hey Aiden - Totally understand how you feel. Since mid-2010 everything had been going in the right direction with my fitness website. Traffic was increasing every month, earnings were increasing at a faster rate than my traffic, life was good. It seemed like I couldn't put a foot wrong.

Then on October 14th 2011 I noticed my traffic was really down. I checked my traffic stats by hour and something seemed to have happened about 7am. My first port of call was The Warrior Forum and sure enough it looked like Google had rolled out a pretty big update.

I was pretty annoyed and worried initially but collected my thoughts and decided my current strategy had been working for over 4 years. No need to do anything drastic. Just keep doing what I am doing.

After about a couple of weeks it became quite evident that carrying on doing what I was doing wasn't going to bring the traffic back and this is the first time I ever really did feel like quitting. For a few days I just couldn't focus and was so mad about what Google had done. I thought; "If I had worked that hard for 4 years in a regular job I would have been rewarded, not punished."

Here is my advice for getting through it:

    1) Get Away From The Source Of Frustration:- The thing that finally stopped me thinking about my lack of blog traffic was getting away from the computer and doing something I enjoy (going for a jog). Do whatever works for you. Watch a movie, go to a bar, eat some junk food etc. Just get away from your blog for a while and treat yourself to something you really enjoy.

    2) Reflect On The Situation Positively:- Your instinct will be to keep focussing on the problem but I found when I started to think more positively I became a lot more productive. If this is the first time you have hit that low point then you must have some previous mini-successes with your blog. Think about these. For example, my positive spin was that although Google had killed my traffic currently I was smashing it earlier in the year. I've done it before so really there's no reason I can't do it again.

    3) Don't Quit:- What it all boils down to for me is that I would rather do IM more than any other regular job. I would rather spend 80 hours a week writing about what I love and earning the bare minimum than working 40 hours a week in a job I hate that pays me very well. If it's the same for you then you won't quit.

    Tom

      Hey Alden,

I have a recipe for you; if you feel like giving up, then move away from the Internet for about 1 week. Don't even touch your mouse. I'm sure you'll get the energy back.

I think every single person considers quitting at some stage. Personally I have begun and stopped Internet Marketing 4 times. This is my 5th time, and I am seeing some great results now.

The bottom line is never give up. It sounds lame and obvious, but its true. If you focus on one thing diligently for long enough and learn everything you can about it, you will eventually get results.

I think I've given up a least a dozen times. Granted internet marketing is not a profession for me, and hardly a hobby, so when "life" gets in the way, it usually takes priority. The way I look at it, is that it takes money to make money. So if you're trying to go from "zero to hero" you're taking the long way.

When I'm down, (which seems like it happens all to often), I usually go read some of the free WSO's I can find, and occationally purchase the popular ones. For myself, I like the ones that present ideas, not full systems, because I can build off of their ideas, hence the fact I like the free WSO's because they usually don't go into much detail. It's just that small step I need to get the creative juices flowing again.

    My two cents.

    Yes,

I think most of us have felt what you're feeling now.

Ask yourself: Have I done everything in my power
to get the blog successful and earn a good living from it?

    Are you performing:

    • List Building
    • Product Creation
    • Utilized Social Media(Including Forums) for Traffic
    • Building Relationships
    • Establishing Yourself as an Expert

It will take a lot of work but it can be done!

After 2 and some ears, dreaming, procrastinating and waxing lyrical about all the possibilities that IM can bring, I've made $48 as an affiliate for JV press and their multimedia theme. Probably did my wordpress learning curve through that( still on the curve).
When I'm away on 'tour' I don't have that regular access to the net, so I don't push forward, and when I get back, home and online, the passion comes back.

Never feel like giving up though, as I know I've pushed the door open more and more. The time spent earning nought, has nit been frustrating as such, but has enabled ne to learn more about what's possible, forge a path, undersand more about the dynamics of what I can do.

  • If you feel Dardenelle one of the things that you can do is try to figure out one thing that you can accomplish write it down and didn't do it in the reward yourself. By doing this in moving slowly towards your end goal you are going to start getting more self-confidence and more self-assurance and that will propel you more and more to get to the goal that you have set.

Often what happens is we don't see any progress bye-bye writing it down and checking it off the list and moving forward day after day eventually you see progress specially if you write it down.

If you keep doing this for months is very difficult not to have any kind of progress and then the doubts and thoughts of giving up they suddenly disappear. Good luck.

I will speak from experience. Back in the 90's I would kindly ask people via snail mail if I could hyper link to their web pages. Well, I got back some nasty letters threatening to sue me. Well, how times change as many of those same clowns now beg me to link to em.

People who are nasty rarely taste success. I know about the rich jerk, but he did declare bankruptcy I believe, or are we wrong. Still, being nasty will cost you customers in the long run.

Right now, reviewers on you tube will post snippets of a movie. There are howls of protest from the movie company. Then they take down the review. These are the "Don't copy that floppy" clowns that belong in a circus.

When will they ever learn of the power of FREE press - probably never. I believe that people who steal my resources help to popularize me. Fact is, most people who worry about the money they are losing do not ponder on how those copiers would never have bought their product any way.

I once saw a man say that when movies first became popular he went to a cola company. He asked if he could use their product in his movie. They said no. Also, they threatened to sue him and he went with pepsi. The rest is history as we say.

There is a book author that is threatening to shut down libraries for giving away free content that he says costs him money. Hey, I am not making this up.
