Funny Money. Louis CK Invades Internet Marketing

That's right...

Certified funny man Louis CK is trying his hand at Internet Marketing and it's working out rather well indeed.

You can read his earnings claims in the link below...

Any lessons in here my brothers and sisters?

I think so... but I'm on deadline, so you go first :-)

I read his post. Fricking awesome.

Everyone wins. He gives it at a true "WSO" price or should I say Louis CK Special Offer (LCKSO?) price and he makes bank doing it. $5? Great deal for his fans. I have no reason to buy it but really nice to see him succeed with this, indeed.

Obviously he's not your normal internet marketer and he has a large, large established fan base after years of work already, but still cool nonetheless to see a celebrity comedian do something like this.

Being a huge Louis CK fan anyway, I bought it. You should buy it too, if only for the principle of the thing.

I'm buying it! I heard his interview with Terry Gross a few nights ago where he talked about his decision to sell this one via the Internet. Spectacular!

Interesting marketing indeed. It looks like a success from the outside but if you take him for his word he says he could've made more money had he went the traditional route. Hopefully sales will continue to pour in and maybe we'll start to see a trend where we can get discounted products right from the artists.

Either way, the marketing plan worked for me. I can't pass up anything Louis C.K. at $5.

That would be great to see.

The thing is, it seems as though these methods can and do work, they don't generate quite as much profit as traditional methods. One could look to Radiohead for a similar example: they released one of their albums (In Rainbows) digitally on a "pay what you want" model. While it got a ton of attention and they were happy with the results, they didn't do this for their subsequent release(s). It seems as though this is probably the future, but maybe not the near future.

These kind of results would be great for an unknown, but then again, unless some type of video went viral it wouldn't have any success at all.

Yeah, I remember all the hoopla over Radiohead doing something similar. There's a beauty to cutting out the middleman.
