How to choose affiliates

I am thinking of possibly using affiliates with one of my websites. However, some of the stuff that I have seen (following links from sigs etc) - is a complete turnoff for me (as well as my target audience).

I'm talking about the use of loud, garish colours, flashing signs and "in your face" advertising. The audience I'm targetting are mostly high powered professionals and this kind of "over the top" used car salesman advertising would be a complete turnoff.

I have two questions:

1. Where do I go to find affiliates/How do I go about attracting affiliates?
2. How do I filter through to remove the "obnoxious" types described above?

You list your product in affiliate program directories.

You can make it clear in the sign up terms what is and is not expected.

You can also provide what banners/advertising materials are acceptable.

Most people go and join bunch of affiliate directories "hoping" someone will pick up their product/service to promote.

Well, it's a good practice to find affiliate manually and build relationships with them. There's an exception to this rule. If you have a good reputation on the market place, then it's a good practice to submit your programs on some affiliate directory.

But, if you are just starting out - go manually, contacting affiliates of your competitors and help them out to make even more sales. That's how you build trust and connection with those people.

    Be their friend.

You don't really choose affiliates. They choose you. They might consider promoting your product if:

    1. It's really good and offers value
    2. It's selling (or in some cases, it has the potential to sell)
    3. It's something that's appealing to a currently hot market

There's more but those are the main items. Good luck.
