Redirection of Amazon Affiliate Links?

When you make affiliate links on the Amazon website, they add a 1x1 px image (with your affiliate ID in its address!) after the actual affiliate text link. Like this:
HTML Code:
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0743234804/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=AFFILIATES_ID&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0743234804">NAME OF THE PRODUCT</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=AFFILIATES_ID-20&l=am2&o=1&a=0743234804" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />
It's probably a way to ensure that there has been an actual exposure of the link on the affiliate's website.

What I would like to do, is to put on my page links like /product-so-and-so which then my redirection module sends to the actual Amazon page. And, no 1x1 image file.

Is this possible (is anyone actually doing this?), or would it mean that Amazon will not count this referral?

That small image is mainly to track impressions, and such. Doesn't affect your referrals, as far as I know, but it wouldn't hurt to add it to your site footer, for example. Then you can perhaps see more detailed stats in your Amazon affiliate panel too.

Putting it separately is an idea, that way the text remains clear (for the SEO purposes and for the people who would take the ID out).
But, ideally I would like to minimize Amazon links altogether, since it has been been rumored that Google is pushing back sites with Amazon affiliate links on them. I see a good solution in putting every affiliate link into a nofollow redirect. This way every problem is solved.

I don't think you need the image. I get referrals with straight, cloaked, redirected, and even affiliate links I write myself.
