How do you mean free? No upfront payment or no commission to pay? Define free please!

Otherwise, I use oDesk, eLance and PeoplePerHour.com

Then go for the ones I mentioned above...

    Elance
    oDesk
    PeoplePerHour
    Fiverr

What is your skill set? It can be difficult to make a name for yourself in the beginning. Helps if you have an active portfolio.

Dude, you gotta give more info to start with.

What kind of skill set are you looking for?
How long will the project be?
Are you happy to pay by the hour or by the project?

I am off to bed (quite late where I am), but I hope someone will come and answer your question in more detail.

But ask your question in more detail, and I'd be happy to answer it tomorrow.

If you're looking to hire, they're all free. You don't pay to hire. You pay if you're a freelancer and want to bid on projects (Elance, Guru.com) and on some pay commission when you win projects.

There is also freelancer.com. I've never had any experience with them, but they bill themselves as the "world's largest freelancing marketplace." Now, what criteria they use to back that up, I have no idea.

Depends on what you are looking to have done, oDesk is good or check out Fiverr. Or if you are looking for articles iWritter is about the cheapest for articles.

Try Freelanced.com. I've had great luck there when outsourcing and hiring.

Try Elance.com, I am vouching for it because of the success that it has allowed me to have in a short period of time. I work from home now and it is solely because of Elance. Figure out the ways to stand out and you will be doing the same. Good luck!

I don't like freelancer.com because I had a bad experience with them before (which I don't like to bring up anymore). I prefer using Elance, Guru or Odesk (my favorite). There is no free with signing up as far as I'm concern.
