True story.

Good for him, the enterprising squatter.

The only time I've done something like that I didn't get an offer, but a letter from an attorney. I even put the domain up for sale figuring they would rather pay a few hundred bucks than pay attorney fees. No deal.. they wanted to nail by butt to the wall. I ended up turning it over to them because at the time I had no bandwidth for a fight.

@scott: Yeah...but if you own it, you own it. Don't you? I don't see where they have a legal right to come after you?

The lawyer saw it differently. They played the "Similar to our Trademarked name" card. They may have indeed lost in court, but they won because they had more money than me. I could not have fought an expensive court battle to keep a so so domain name that earned me no revenue.

Its a really complicated area, I know of stories like this but also many where they have had law suits filled against them, they are usually scare tactics but they sure do work.

    Thanks

That guy got out really lucky compared to most squatters. Lucky he wasn't challenged for the domain, that's how they usually get them.

Its probably because you where wanting cash for it.

If you just flat out told them you wernt selling the domain and you where not using it for profit then it would have held up well in court ive had friends in similar situations.

Ya normally they don't just let you off that easy... I'm surprised.

And You definitely don't want to go to court with people who have deeper pockets than you..

I read an article that was similar to this story recently.. Apparently there was this guy who kept an eye on American Idol contestants and then went around and purchased their names in domain .com format.. He would then create nice turnkey websites with quality content about the contestants and attempt to become their agent/representation, he got fairly rich doing this and I thought, man that is where the money is!
