Need advice on embedding videos to our DAP membership site "Nothings working"

Hi Warriors

Please can someone help us out because we have tried all the plugins under the sun now for our wordpress website, we have seen this which may be the last resort but I hope not because it's pricey: VideoRebel - Add Video To Your Website Without Headaches, Hassles or High Costs

Video hosting is a nightmare if you don't use a 3rd party hosting system that reformats the video into several versions and serves up the right version depending which device you are using.

The ideal method seems to be to host the videos on an Amazon s3 server and then use 3rd party systems to embed onto wordpress. No easy options when you want to control and hide content from general public view.

Please can someone help us out and let us know about any types of free alternatives. It would be greatly appreciated as we have racked our brains with this now.

Cheers

-Lee

I'll know more when I have finished something that I am working on right now. I should have a proper answer within 24 hours, but ...

I'm using OptimizePress for my Wordpress template (but it's so much more than just a template), DAP for my membership management, AmazonS3 for storing my material and S3MediaVault for protecting my material so that only members can view or download my videos. When I play videos on the site I use EasyVideoPlayer.

All these things link up really well (at least they have done so far), but by this time tomorrow I will have completed all the tests and functionality.

It's not a free solution, the costs are:-

    OptimizePress $97
    DAP $167
    AmazonS3 - very cheap
    S3MediaVault $27
    EasyVideoPlayer2 $127

All of these systems have great documentation. I personally spent weeks trying different packages and I don't think that you can do better than this combination.

S3MediaVault is made by the people who created DAP.

    Hope that helps

      I meant to add...

If you choose these systems then I would be happy to help if you struggle with setting them up or integrating them, as I have just set it all up myself.

      Hi Kate

It would be great if you could PM me and let me know if it's all worked out for you, I appreciate the list of things you are using as well, fingers crossed you will be able to get it working and I'll then implement the same techniques.

      Cheers

What Kate described is a best in class solution. I also use OptimizePress and EVP. I do not use S3 Vault and im not sure why it is needed.

      Why not use YouTube ?

      - It's FREE
      - You can keep your content PRIVATE with an UNLISTED link
      - They give you the embed code at the click of a button

Break any video over 10 or so minutes into multiple parts.

      Hi Chris

If your not using S3 Vault, how do you actually protect the content, without it being easily shared etc....

Lee - I don't have a membership site today so I don't protect my vids. But with DAP the vids wont show up unless someone is logged in as a member, so shouldn't that be good enough?

        Kate?

          Kate?
You need to move them (the actual video file) over to the protected side though. If you don't do that they're wide open for search engines and anyone who goes fishing for free content on your paid site.

Personally, even though there is a free embed WP plugin, I bought and use Easy Video Player. It just rocks.

DAP + EVP + any WP theme = a kick ass membership site with video content.

For video encoding YES use MP4. Use a free program called Handbrake. It's a gem. I encode using "constant quality" and I find a setting of approximate 25 works well to reduce size without killing quality. Depends on the type of video you have, really. Screen capture? Full motion with people? Talking head?

YouTube for sure is free and easy to embed on any website...

But screws up the quality of the Video

but it's still a fair free alternative and doesn't require much tech knowledge

Yes, but as mentioned I am hosting private videos for my membership site, YT is no good to us because we need the members to be able to login via our website, not the YT channel you see.

      Thanks anyway

Just to answer Chris's question about why S3MediaVault is required ...

You only need to use it if you want to ONLY allow your subscribed members to view or download your material.

So if your material is hosted on Amazon S3 and your file or bucket permissions are set to Public, then anyone can view your videos (sometimes that is what we want), but if you want to restrict viewing then you need to set your permissions to only allow Authenticated Users, to have access.

I couldn't work out how to set up Authenticated Users directly on Amazon S3, so when I found S3 Media Vault, it was an absolute Godsend, as it allows me to only enable my members to view or download the files that are protected by S3MediaVault.

        hope that makes sense.

          Hi Kate

Thank you for taking the time to get back to us it's greatly appreciated indeed, we actually have MP4 HD videos would that be an issue, do they need to be flash when using that platform.

You can use the free video embed plugin:

WordPress › Embedded Video « WordPress Plugins

You can then use a 3rd party video service, you can upload your video directly or just use your S3 account too.

S3 bw is cheap. Copy the URL from of your video from your S3 account then select the "video URL" tab and paste the Amazon S3 video URL there.

The plugin will embed the video for you. Make sure you're protecting your content so it's not wide open.

    Hi Lee

MP4 is probably best actually. However, I would recommend that you do the best you can to make the file sizes as small as possible, without compromising quality, and it should also be encoded at the lowest possible bitrate (again without compromising quality). You might already have the optimum output or you could do some work to optimize it.

As we're both in the UK, it might be best to have a quick chat. I'll PM you my phone number.

I too have DAP, easy video player using amazon s3. Not built out my site that DAP is for though!!!

Re YouTube though, if one has a professional site, membership or otherwise, I reckon using YT on site is less than professional...great for traffic, but for me a no no onsite...

First of all I would like to thank you Kate for taking the time to speak with my business partner Steve on the phone yesterday, lastly guys thank you for replying, I will be waiting for my tech savvy business partner to read these comments and get back to me.

I'm afraid I'm some what shall we say detached from the functionality of how this all works, I can rank up websites to #1 spots but when it comes to things like this I leave it with him.

Will report back when I hear back from him this morning.

    Cheers

I am looking into a video membership site too and was wondering if anyone had looked into using Vimeo Pro to host the videos (not the Plus version?

It's $200/y, but I believe the Pro version now allows you to protect content and your videos won't be listed on the standard Vimeo site.

Since their quality is great, did anyone consider them?

Also for those using S3, could anyone give me a rough idea about the budget required for that?
E.g. #videos viewed * average video file size = total bandwidth per month = ???$

      Thanks

I'm interested in this option too. Seems like it might be a good alternative to Amazon S3. Anyone have any experience with this?
