Site redesign - overhaul of theme... what will happen?

Hi there,

I'm currently having my website redesigned on a fresh WordPress build in a completely different folder.

I'm changing up the categories and setting up some new features - the content will pretty much be the same, just re organised. I will also be stripping out a load of plugins and doing everything in line or with JS if possible.

I will be setting up 301 re directs because i have a good couple hundred pages on my blog and they are all linked to from various forums and facebook pages.

My question is - what is going to happen to search rankings when i switch over the site? Just now i am on page 1 for quite a few terms - i'm worried that this change up might negativley affect my site.

Anyone have any experience here?

  • In theory: It should be fine to do redirects.

    But:
    I would never touch anything on a page that is on page 1 and gets traffic.

      Hmmm this will be tricky - as i say i will not be changing any of the content - just the skin and the location of it on my server and of course the URL is going to change but that will be handled with a 301 redirect.
  • One option is to build static html pages for the pages that rank and remove them from WordPress and upload them separately.

    As far as WP is concerned they do not exist but they are on the server as hard coded html pages. You might order (or build) a html template that emulates your blog.

  • Then go ahead and make it nice and lose the rankings. Been there. Done that.
