Should I protect my e-book?

Hi, very inexperienced warrior geek here, working on my first e-book. I'm wondering if I need to try to generate unique passwords for each pdf I sell, to try to protect them from being copied and given away. The few e-books I've purchased do not do this, so I guess we just assume that we can't prevent copying and we don't worry about it?

Any advice is appreciated.
Brian

    hi Brian,
i will advice you not to do it because if your e-book gets circulated in the internet, then more people will come to know about you and they might also go to your website to op-in into your mailing list.
this will give you a better exposure in the world of internet and also bring traffic to your website.

People can easily share their copy of the PDF including the password. What's the point? You're not going to protect your eBook using that technique.

You can sell the book as a Kindle ebook. I heard they're pretty hard to 'crack.'

If you're just starting out... no. Don't worry about protecting it. Just get it out there for sale!

That's completely true. Your goal right now should be to gain experience and make some profit. Later on, when you're more experienced and handling much more customers, you can start thinking about protecting your book and making more sales.

That does not make any difference. A person that is willing to share an ebook is willing to share its password too because it does not require any effort at all, they simply paste the password into the post/page where they offer it for share.

It will only make it annoying for people to reenter the password each time they open it up so I would not do it.

Also as someone said before, you'll make yourself a good reputation if your content is good so in the future it will be easier for you to sell something so don't worry about this, if people want to share it, they will (after all, we did send a person on the Moon you know).

Did you hear about "The Best Spinner"? It's a popular software for IM. The way it works is that you receive an unique code and together with your email address that acts like an username you log in connecting to the mother server. I know people that managed to make the software not wanting it to access the server so they could use it. This is just an example to show you that if you have great content, then nothing can stop it against being shared on the internet.

Yes, I wouldn't really worry about it especially if you cross promote a little in your ebook and let readers know what else you offer.

Other than that... to completey protect your ebooks... disabling the select, copy, paste... the print screen key etc... then gdgsoft.com do some software particulary for this. If you know a little basic PHP too you can verify the purchase upon the ebook / app being opened. It's worth checking out.

Don't do it. Matter of fact, write a few more and give them away.
