Bad Economy Creating Competition for Internet Marketers?

Hi all.

There are so many people that are out of work today with the economy the way that it is. I've noticed several people on here saying that they just lost their job, or that they lost it not too long ago. This makes me wonder, have the floods of layoffs and low hiring statistics turned more people on to internet marketing?

I'm sure that the economic climate has contributed to the surge of people looking to earn some money from the internet. As far as calling them competition? I wouldn't think so. There will always be the small minority that understands what needs to be done to be successful; and the majority that runs around trying anything that promises a pretty penny.

I totally agree, in fact, I think it has made internet marketing easier due to all these people trying to earn some easy cash. It has definitely increased internet marketing product sales.

It may have turned more people to internet marketing. But I doubt it has created competition in internet marketing for people already in the game. There is a big difference between people who are looking to make it in internet marketing (trying it out) and people who take action and take it seriously.

What the bad economy has done however, is increase the amount of sales people are making in the MMO and internet marketing niche.

It has effected things negatively as far as sales go, I'm sure. But I'm not very worried about someone coming online after losing a job and taking money out of my pockets. Just like I'm sure a carpenter wouldn't put too much thought into me losing my online income and picking up his trade.

Yes. Trouble is, the kind of person who trades time for money needs a lot of education on the path to running a successful business, and the overwhelming majority of them will never bother to get it.

It reminds me of the "computer programming" craze of the 1980s. If you just learned computer programming, you would never be out of work and you would always make good money. Except none of that is really true, because the people who are never out of work and always make good money aren't the people who learn programming, but the people who are programmers.

Internet marketing is the same: anyone can learn it, and anyone can do it, but what makes you successful is more than just the learning and the doing. It's a way of thinking about things, an understanding of how things work - you have to "get it" before it really works for you.

The good thing is, this makes us (established / old in the game) internet marketers more money as more and more people will be looking for ways to make money online and since they are clueless, they will start buying courses.

The bad thing is, after those new-comers educate themselves, the competition will increase, which makes it hard for everyone to make money.

This is precisely the mindset that creates the problem for most people.

They think "I have two years experience, so I will get the job before someone with no experience. But in two years, they will also have two years experience! OH NOES!"

Except now you have four years experience. And if you are not just jacking around marking time until the next paycheck, you will still be the most valuable employee. As long as you continue to improve yourself and your work, the guy two years behind you can NEVER catch up.

Of course, many people don't want to improve themselves and their work. But those people already have a problem; they just can't see it until it's too late.

Terrific points made by Caliban here...

There's never any reason to fear competition as long as you're focused on providing great value and improving yourself and your work continuously.

I did not think about the experience factor. You guys are right, someone starting out really isn't going to be competition to someone who is a seasoned marketer. Also, a fairly large percentage of those who are just "checking this out" will probably not put forth the time and effort to get on the same plateau as those who do this for a living.

It's like the SERPs, you're not competing against the 100,000 results...just the first 10.

Don't forget too that a good percentage of those getting laid off are above the age of 55. Age factor definitely plays a role in one's ability to wake up one day and decide to start an online business.

In fact, knowing what I know about web marketing today, if I was to be at a corporate job right now thinking of just-getting-started online, I think I'd keep the job. Just too many things to have to learn in a short amount of time unless you have some bank to play with.

if so the way I built my business that is a good thing, I never look at someone as competition in a negative way, they are always a potential JV, affiliate, or a promotional partnership.

For me to be successful I do not need to take away from anybody as there is plenty for everyone. Each person has the opportunity to build the other up and create a long term and profitable relationship.

A small percentage of the people who are driven by circumstances such as job loss will be successful in the IM space as they would be in any entrepreneurial area. It may open their eyes to how unsuited they were to their old environment.

However I think the mindset that most of them bring over from working there 9 -5 is completely wrong and will hinder their progress. The idea that you have to invest time and money without an immediate financial reward is completely different to having a job.

Yes. In addition, the desire to work at your own terms is luring more people to IM.

I don't feel that it matters how many people jump online to make a living. I don't look at other Internet Marketers as "competition." Neither do I look at newbies as "competition." Like many sports and talents like writing and being an artist. You find your own niche. You learn and do. It's the "doing" the "taking action" that separate you from the pack of others.

You can learn a lot from other successful Internet Marketers. And you can also learn from those who jump on and don't do well. They help us learn what to Not to do.

I agree with the mindset as well. You have to be able to leave the 9 to 5 mindset behind and take on an entrepreneurial mindset. Otherwise you'll feel frustrated. The same way I would feel frustrated working a 9 to 5 and only being able to make a certain amount of money.

Online and offline as an entrepreneur I can work a few hours and make a lot more than any 9 to 5. I can also set up income streams that keep working once they are in place, thereby increasing my income without increasing my work.
