Hey warriors,

I have a client and she wants to move her website to wordpress. Her original website designer I guess doesn't know how to make that happen. My questions are, Roughly how much would that cost for a html/php guy to make that switch? The website is tiny with only 4 pages including the homepage and has little content.

Also, when it does get transfered is that it? Can I add new wordpress themes and make changes just like a site originally created with wordpress?

Thanks

With a site that small I would just copy the graphics she has (if that's what she wants) and re-build it from scratch. It's just a matter of Copying and pasting the content over to new WP Pages.

If the programmer is strong in Wordpress and PHP, and it's a small site as you wrote, it could be done in actually 30 minutes - an hour at most. That's that my teacher is telling us anyway. Personally I'd probably take me 2 hours or so, but then again, I also spend most time marketing and writing ebooks

$50 is perhaps the right price, but be willing to pay $100. But do yourself a favor, choose one with experience in wordpress, since even skilled PHP programmers need to overcome some kind of a learning curve to be able to utilize the power of the wordpress framework.

And theese additional hours of learning how Wordpress works, shouldn't be paid by you, or your client

[edit] Can't post links yet but here's a tutorial that once helped me, before we were taught about this in school: h t t p colon dashx2 line25.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-simple-wordpress-blog-theme

      Thanks for the replies everyone!

Any advice on how I should collaborate this between the person I hire and the guy she currently has hosting her website.

What will the contractor need from the person hosting the site to implement the change?

He'll develop it locally on his own computer using XAMPP or something similar. He just needs the HTML files and images. Basically all the files placed in your clients root directory for that site, just zip them

He'll develop the theme, and you or your client simply needs to install wordpress on the server, and upload the theme. Btw what hosting provider are your client currently using? Most but not all servers supports PHP and MySQL which is needed!

          Thanks for the help Soren

          He uses GoDaddy

          Ok, so

          1. Have her web guy zip the root directory of the website.
          2. Give that zip file to the contractor I hire
          3. Once he does his magic, I will just install wordpress like I would any other site

          Are those steps correct?

Why are you selling a service that you know nothing about?

I would be pissed off If I was the client & you were practicing on my sites. Learn new things with your own sites, on your own time, good grief.

Yukon, who said anything about selling her this as a service. Yes she's my client but she's also a friend and I'm making no gain off fixing this problem for her.

I understand were your coming from but you are just making assumptions.

Also, even if she wasn't a friend and I was after profit I would have still taken the same route.

Try to find quality advice from other marketers and outsource it. I personally would never go in and practice anything on her site. I believe in outsourcing and doing your research to finding quality contractors.

        Here's her website,

        Home

I'm really only charging her for monthly SEO services. They have a small budget and I don't want to deal with her current web guy, in regards to making updates and educating him so I explained to her why wordpress is superior and she agreed, which makes both our lives easier and more efficient.

The layout will not be the same. Im completely redesigning here site with a wordpress template. Probably striking from theme forest.

I have seen the website and the headway theme could surely imitate this one.

Anyway, good luck my friend and more power to your business.

He's getting the job done.. geez.

yukon, to your information some people have NO clue who to turn to, in order to improve their online presence, and get it done. Sometimes there's a need for a "middle" man.

If Ray knows a little about marketing, social media and seo, and gets the big picture but might not be as strong when it comes to programming skills, it doesn't mean he's trying to cheat his client or anything.

Unless he markets himself as a webdeveloper, which you have no reason to believe.

Actually asking what a resonable price might be sounds reasonable enough. So take it easy, he's not pretending to be an expert in this specific field. For all we know, he'd be offering this service for free

Copying and pasting content over is one thing but you really need to share the design with the developer before giving or guessing a quote.

I have two wordpress/php/css experts that could rewrite wp from scratch if they wanted to. We convert an average of 5 sites a month to wp from various platforms. Even they average a good full day to slice up the designs and set them all up.

Usually, there is a home page design, then a second design layout for the sub-pages, then even a 3rd slightly different layout for the blog section. It's almost like setting up graphics and css inside wordpress...3 times! And, then you will usually have two or three additional css sets for multiple browsers and browser versions to consider.

I don't know where these $50 guys are making these comments from. Just saying the last thing you want to do is have to go back to your client saying, "Well, sorry, we all thought a four page conversion would take 30 minutes but we didn't count on your graphics taking so much tweaking to get right inside the wp templates. Would you mind please giving us another $500?" OOPS!

What would it take ($$/time) to convert that to wordpress? That's how we landed on 30 minutes - 1 hour / 50 - 100$

Why are you even talking about design, photoshop slicing and 3 layouts? I agree that more information would be preferable, and this would be how to create a typical website, but really what he asked us was just "what will it cost to take this existing HTML website, and incorporate it into the wordpress CMS?"

If we stick to this question, and stick to the facts, they already have a single page and a front page design in HTML/CSS (yes creating a design, slicing it up and setting up the css takes time, but why reinvent the wheel?) - most likely they don't have a blog layout, so we'll create the simplest blog layout for them? (should be a rutine matter) If you know wordpress, you know how easy this can be done..

      You nailed it.

I had few clients too who wanted to convert their html built webistes into wordpress, normally I just used the headway theme with advance customization. I was able to copy almost the same look and feel and layout of the original websites and my clients have approved them.

I am not sure if it's okay but perhaps the OP should consider pasting the link of the website so that we can see the real appearance of it.

      Sincerely,
      Louie Tugas

There's a WSO that sells a plugin that converts HTML to Wordpress quickly and easily, you may want to check that out:

    ~AzSno...

P.S. I've used it on over 25 of my sites and never had any problems converting HTML to Wordpress

Probably a good idea to get a redirect plugin too. Make sure you redirect the html pages to the WP new url for exactly the same page titles otherwise you will loose your indexing. I have recently moved 700+ pages from HTML to WP you need to be careful of pages vs posts.
