Is Using 'Incognito' In Chrome The Same As Using Proxies? There is a new feature on Google Chrome called 'Incognito'. I am wondering if it acts as a proxy. Any techie types out there know how it works?

Thanking you in advance

No, "Incognito" mode just means that your browsing history won't be stored locally, and your current cookies are all hidden from sites you visit while in that mode. It's like installing a brand new browser temporarily on your computer.

Proxies, on the other hand, are other computers that you can connect to in order to route your traffic through them. Then, when you visit a website via a proxy, that website thinks you are visiting from another IP address instead of your own. It's sort of like bouncing a signal off a satellite like they do in the movies.

Also, whenever you use any Google product, no matter what you do you can pretty much be assured that they are always gathering and storing your information in order to better their search results.

That is 100% correct, and by "any Google product" he does mean any Google product, including Google.com, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Talk etc.

And to answer your question, no, it is like "Private browsing" in Firefox, it just does not record anything in your browsing or DL history, so it provides local protection only.

However, it does let you surf porn without the wife being able to check the web history... not that I would know anything about that.

I use that mode to check Google search results without any effects of Google personalization. Works well.

I use scroogle.org to check Google search results. (be careful, I said the dot org...)

Scroogle will also keep you amused at their paranoia - the foundation of their business is precisely who they lampoon at every chance.
