What's Most Ridiculous/Over-Hyped Claim In IM History?

by parker

What do you think is the most ridiculous, over-the-top,
impossible-to-believe, exaggeration of a claim you've ever
heard on a sales page or during a product launch?

From "This system was DIRECTLY, SOLELY, 100%
responsible for $xx million in xx hours" to "You're THROWING
MONEY OUT THE WINDOW unless you (buy) implement this
new system RIGHT NOW" ...what takes the cake?

Personally I can't get over the

"Make millions with no site/list/experience/clue/effort!"

claims. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I
see newbies falling for those...

When I see a big claim on a site for advanced marketers, it is a little hard to believe. But, you have to realize that there actually are people making thousands of dollars each day.

My problem is when sites geared toward beginners have CB screenshots of making thousands of dollars per day. I don't doubt that those people actually are making that kind of money, I do doubt that they achieved that success instantly, and think they should not claim to show newbies how to get rich that quickly.

It does take effort if you want to be a successful marketer. I don't have a problem with catchy headlines, as long as they are realistic for the targeted audience.

Yeah there's a fine line between cynicism and skepticism,
      especially in the IM world...

But some claims are just ridiculous, no matter who
      they're aimed at.

I love the ones that mention "$xx million generated
in one day!", despite it referring to membership
launches that won't see all of that revenue
for 12 months (not to mention affiliate payouts,
refunds, and a thousand other expenses...)

You make a good point, to an extent...

Websites that earn, course you can automate them.

You can automate processes within your business.

But automate your "entire business"...? Is it really a business?
Unless of course you own a company, but have no input
into operations, how else is it automated?

If you want to build a real IM business, you shouldn't
be thinking of automating the entire thing.

That would be "systemized," which is not the same thing that's implied (hyped) by the "on autopilot" claim that's so often made.

"Autopilot" implies that there's a button that, once pressed, will run the business.

It's a lofty goal - just like the multi-million dollar earnings claims. However, it's seriously over-hyped, and given the amount of research, testing, and tweaking that we all know any real system requires, yes, I think it's pretty ridiculous when a $37 product claims to be able to provide such a solution.

all those arbitrage SCAMS which claim that you can make big money w/ AdWords arbitrage.

All those "clicks for 1 penny" on AdWords

By the way.....i strongly think that "how i made" WSOs and campaigns are usually the most successful ones. Just look around and see for yourself.

Also..."autopilot" might be an old phrase for us IM since we see it all the time, but i think for the avg. customer "autopilot" might actually sound good.

MANY, MANY people look for "how i made...." advice and especially things which require LITTLE or NO work....so from that point of view "How i made...." and "AutoPilot" are good phrases in the "money making niche"...there's certainly a reason we have those phrases

If you already studied psichology then you know that the human nature own that to the achievement of something is looking for the shorter road always. I experienced this in my whole life.

The smart marketer build his/her marketing up on this. This not advisable unprincipled to use if you want to be in IM business, because it brings its own punishment.

        Scott,

"tosh" means "rubbish" as in talking rubbish.

Not exactly hype but there are certain people who say

        "you can unsubscribe any time"

        (1. If you can find the unsubscribe link 2. If I feel like letting you go)

      That's not a "tosh."

I use a system that requires no website of your own.

One of the most popular ways to start IM (article marketing) requires no site of your own.

      Anyway, my vote goes for:

"You'll See How a High School Drop-Out From Paducah, Kentucky Rakes In $1.2Million In Just 9 Months By Partnering With Google - All While He Built His Own List of 40,234 Loyal Customers That Produce Him Income For Years & Years To Come...Here's PROOF!"

My favourite is "Make A Million Dollars Overnight", yes it's a real headline, and for this priceless information it was a steal at $5. I mean come on people, if you have the secret to making a million dollars overnight you're not going to part with it for $5.

I never did purchase it because I could just imagine the report saying something like "now all you have to do to make your million overnight is to sell 200,000 of reports like these in the next 24 hours, piece of cake.

Any experienced marketer knows how to sell to an Opportunity
Seeker, the point is whether or not you feel comfortable with it,
and how long it's gonna last.

Some people would rather sacrifice sales in the name of integrity,
and some simply don't want their name associated with an over-hyped
      product.

Of course in the larger world of Marketing, the entire IM niche is
seen as extremely hypey to begin with, it's direct marketing afterall.

But still, even in IM, those that offer quality and integrity are
*usually* around a lot longer than those that don't.

      -

Whenever I hear a ridiculous claim, I keep thinking of an analogy
from Australian TV; Today Tonight vs. The 7:30 Report.

Two very different, nightly current affairs shows. One is gutter
journalism at it's best, the other is highly respected.

One gets 50% more viewers than the other, yet I know which
      one I'd rather watch/work for.

It's not so much a specific headline as just an overall theme... the theme that making lots of money online is easy and you can do it in your sleep, all automated, with no work. I am aware that it IS easy to make a little money online (just post something on eBay for example), but making a living on it takes work.
