Best Niches for the Recession

Dear Warriors,

I'm developing my niche and learning the ropes of IM as I go.

Considering the fact that we are in tough economic times and header into even tougher times, what do you think some good niches to investigate in the near future are?

Saving money, dealing with debt, asset repossession, etc., etc., how to make money in tough times?

I'm looking for another option to slowly build as we enter tougher economic circumstance?

Anything that teach people how to make more money, save the money they are making, and pay off any that they own is going to sell. After all, that is exactly what they are looking for in a recession. Just make sure you take your time with the product/website because if people are investing their money into it and are already in a tough spot, they are the same people who will be posting bad reviews when you don't live up to the sales letter

Look around in affiliate program market places for popular products that sell well. Also consider lowing your prices, because even if your pitch makes people want your product really bad, if they can't afford it they might not buy.

Selling to offline business owners. You'd probably make more also if you became a consultant for offline business owners. The "offline marketing discussions" part in this forum will give you all the information you need to start making money as a consultant in your spare time. Offline business owners are STILL paying even in this tough economy. Research it and see for yourself.

The "make money" niche is a big one, but there are other things people are going to be looking to do -- even though the economy sucks like lose weight or quit smoking -- not only is it unhealthy, but it will save them money that they can re-invest in other things.

    Good luck,
    Joey

Step one....change your beliefs. Accepting that as reality may cause you to accept that for yourself also.

Do you want to talk to people about "doom and gloom" or "hope and opportunity"?

      Dear Barry,

So many people are facing up to a stark reality at the moment, and I want to offer services that earn me money and assist them in their predicament.

I have no interest in ripping off people but am looking into upcoming market demands which include ways to deal with the current economic turmoil.

Doom and gloom makes people want hope and opportunity.

        Dear Haydn,

I know this is just semantics, but it is critical difference...

Hope and Opportunity help people to overcome Doom and Gloom. Doom and gloom often just lead people into depression, stagnation, and indecisiveness, which will equate to them not buying your product or service.

I am not belittling the facts of many people's stark reality, but I am suggesting people are more likely to follow someone who is filled with discussions of hope, opportunity, and belief rather than someone who is talking about the "tough economic times and header into even tougher times".

My belief is simply this...If you switch your message, you are going to make more sales, keep clients longer, and help them overcome their challenges more easily. In other words...you help them more and have more success for yourself.

        Sincerely and Joyfully,

        Barry

          Dear Barry,

I agree with your approach, but I figure those on the forum understand that in reality economic times are tough and there will be a market of people looking for solutions to the problem.

In copywriting terms there is both the carrot and the stick in this instance.

          Thanks

    What Recession???

    The recession is long gone!!!

Just look around: The malls are full again, Christmas trees were sold out 1 week before Christmas, new constructions etc etc.

Can't say as I agree that the recession is long gone. It doesn't matter if retailers had great Christmas sales or not and construction starting. The effects are still here, and there are an incredible amount of people hurting, who will continue hurting financially for a long time to come, and they really want an opportunity to rebuild fast.

Actually, what I intended to mention is that you should not forget niches of interest for the many that survived the economic downturn in style and have money to spend.

So, you really have two different markets here. The ones who need to get their lives back in order financially quickly, and the ones who want to add an extra cushion just in case they fall. The ones who made it through financially in comfort could be very receptive if you have the right stuff to offer.

Exactly what you need to offer, I can't really advise on that. A lot will depend on your careful search to home in on appropriate niches, and your marketing of these products.

The economic times are so tough, indeed, that Google is making billions of dollars each year. And millions every day.

The economy is oh so bad... How about, stop using economy as an excuse... and learn to provide value to people who need it.

No matter how "tough" that economy of yours is, people's desire for value and authenticity are ever present.

What will you do if the economy was booming? What will you choose to be your scapegoat then?

I don't care how good or bad the economy is doing, either way, it's very difficult to run a successful business. Because a successful business is not about economy, it's about ideas. Can you create ideas? Can you put them into action?

I think we are still in tough times, im over in Europe and things are still tough for people.

There are still many offline businesses to target but not only are their wallets tighter but the competition for their business has grown considerably.

An accountant friend of mine says he gets on average 5 to 10 letters a week from new SEO companies plus a load of emails as well.

Like metioned by other warriors I would stick with health and fitness, weight loss, debt control niches etc.

IMO the formula does not change regardless of whether the economy is struggling or lush, the best niches are ones that don't have a lot of competition but have a lot of searches.

I can appreciate arguments for and against the question, "Is the recession done."

From my point of view, as a marketer, it doesn't matter! My niche is income creation. Recession or boom, everyone can use more money, right?

My best advice is, focus on finding a niche that will work if the bottom drops out in the recession, or...if the economy takes off.

I am of the belief that, Yes, people are going to spend money at Christmas, no matter what! They will do whatever they have to to make it happen. NO ONE wants to wake up on Christmas morning and have their children approach a vacant floor, perhaps with no sign of a tree even, much less a present!

If the economy is truly improving in some areas, I know for a fact that it is NOT in many. I'm seeing jobs that would routinely always have new openings just about every week turn to ones where people are sticking it out, no matter how bad, because a job is better than no job.

One thing to remember, if you are planning to cater to those struggling financially, you will always have an audience, no matter how GOOD the economy might be. Why is that you ask?

        1. Many elderly have to live on meager amounts of SSI. As you know, if you listen to the news, that is always an area that the govt. always has on the chopping block.

        2. Newly married couples are always under the false pretense that living together is cheaper than living separately...and it is in some ways, but it is not a resolution to all the other costs involved.

        3. New parents trying to get a grip on the cost of raising children. Poor things, they don't realize that it just keeps getting more expensive over time.

        4. Divorced/single parent who single-handedly raised their children with no child support or outside help.

        5. People saving up to purchase their first house or a better car, so they cut corners in other areas.

        6. Uneducated people or under-educated individuals who can't compete for jobs in the marketplace.

        7. Those over 40+ who are age discriminated against. Yes, it does begin as early as 40! And unfortunately, no matter how well educated, it is next to impossible to get work in their chosen field. Why? Because companies can hire someone straight out of college for half the cost!

        8. There are those loyal to the companies that they worked for up until retirement, only to find that just before they retire, they get kicked to the curb for NO REASON. Why, so the company doesn't have to pay them what they deserve, their PENSION!

        9. Take a look on the forum. Every day, I see more and more newcomers seeking to make money in whatever way they can. When you see such an influx, pay attention.

        10. Try this one on for size...a 25 year old young unmarried woman with her CNA and CMA license who couldn't get a job as a babysitter for the following reasons:

        *
She was discriminated against and ridiculed, because the woman had a problem with the fact that this 25 year old unmarried young woman did not have children herself...therefore unqualified to baby sit. Since when is it not a good or wise thing to wait to have children of your own? Better yet, this young lady has already saved many lives through her work. She was the only one on staff who could administer CPR and did many times! Now, I ask you, who would you want to baby sit your child!

        *
Now keep in mind, she (25 year old) has her CNA license to care for the elderly (since 2005), and her CMA license (since 2007), so she could dispense medication, perform CPR, insert a catheter, treat wounds no one else wanted to, but she's not qualified to babysit! This is someone who could truly save her 8 year old child's life is something came up!

What is my point in all of this? While it is true that in this economy jobs are harder to find, these same situations don't apply just in times of a down economy. They are just intensified and gain our attention, waking us up in disbelief, unless it happens to US!

Think about those 10 situations above. Whether it's 1910, 1960, or 2012, throughout history, it remains the same. They are all evergreen situations! There's 10 angles to pursue right there!

There are many more that you can gather by paying attention to your surroundings, TV, news, newspapers articles, magazines, EVERYTHING! Those will provide you with lots of avenues for targeting your next product/audience.

Decide who your TARGET audience is and deliver valuable information that they truly NEED, not want necessarily, but NEED. "Want" goes out the window when finances are low, but if it is a determined NEED, they will buy it. So, start with need first, then wants. I wouldn't rule out either, because those not financially strapped can afford their wants!

So, anyone pursuing this field...do it FOR REAL! Truly make a difference in someone's life. The rewards will come.

Remember to "Pay It Forward" in whatever way you can, no matter your current financial state. It means so much!

I tend to focus more on evergreen niches that aren't too dependent on what the economy is doing.

People are still concerned about their health, family's health, and even their pet's health. People will always look for a mate. People are still getting married. I met a lady at a seminar last year who knew how to plan weddings on a budget, but also knew how to make them spectacular.

People still need to find places to live, need advice on how to write a better resumes, how to interview for a job, how to make money, how to save and protect money, how to save for retirement, how to remodel their own [insert any part of their home here], etc.

Follow where the money is and where people are spending it and that's how you'll find a recession-proof niche. Hone in on their wants, needs, and desires, then use your copy to show them why you're product or service is the solution to those things.

Sure wish you guys would stop talking about "industries" as if they were niches.

      Niches are not:

      1) Make Money
      2) Health
      3) Debt Relief
      4) Education
      5) Job Boards

      These are "industries"

A niche is a tiny little piece of an industry that has been ignored. THAT's where the money is.

      1) Make Money - Fine, that's the industry. The "niche" to make your millions in would be producing a product for teaching parents of unusually young talented singers how to "make money" by getting booked to sing Christmas songs to retirement communities between Thanskgiving and Christmas.

      2) Health is the "industry." The "niche" would be a 25-minute workout for sit-skiers who are paralyzed from the waste down and are wanting to get in shape for ski season.

      3) Debt Relief is the "industry." The "niche" would be how you too were a single mom with a child under 12 with an incurable disease who has finally lost the battle of life after years of heroic effort...and now you've moved on to get your feet established again and rebuild your credit.

Do I need to go on? Sorry, I'm spewing. But, I'm starting to see a trend in these posts why so many fail at affiliate and niche marketing...because you're really not niche marketing!! You're picking gigantic "industries" and wondering why you can't sell anything against the thousands of people who are trying to sell the same exact thing to the same people using the same broad product approach.
