Will Google "kill" Mozilla?

Since the Mozilla Foundation 84% of its revenues (about $ 100 million) last year received from Google, which pays to its search itself in the Firefox browser, the big question is how will Mozilla survive without this deal, which expired in November and would not be extended. When ZDNet site asked whether was there a new deal two companies, in Mozilla responded that no new information.

Google, which has its own Chrome browser, which is better than Firefox, may decide not to renew the agreement in order to indirectly slow down the competition, according to ZDNet.

What will then happen with Mozilla and Firefox?

It may be in place Google "jump" Microsoft, which certainly is intended to provide significant Bing market share, and the two companies already collaborate on a project with Bing Firefox.

However, even if it does solve the problem Mozilla is only in the next year or two, and analysts have predicted that in future the main race of the browser market between Microsoft and run Google.

It is pretty simple, Google doesn't need them anymore. Google wants a monopoly over web browsers.

I'm not really sure how other web browsers such as Opera get their funding tho.

Google Chrome might be better than Firefox, but whenever I check the stats for any of my sites I find that Chrome has a much lower percentage of users and is usually the 3rd or 4th behind IE, Firefox and in some cases Netscape - depending upon the niche. That may change if more computers and laptops come preloaded with Chrome.

I have IE, Firefox and Chrome on my laptop but mostly use Firefox. The Google search box may be on the initial start up page but after that and in new windows or new tabs I get a Yahoo search box in the browser, which I prefer to Google. So perhaps the answer is there, maybe Mozilla are pre-empting and changing over to Yahoo. Good for them if they are.

People in this threade are confused by various news sites with incomplete headlines. Internet Explorer is still the number one browser being used. The Chrome reports relate to Chrome 15 ONLY.

So Chrome 15 compared to say IE8 is more popular but when you add IE7 IE8 and IE9 Internet Explorer in general is widely more popular than Chrome or Firefox

It is definitely up there but it is not the most popular web browser, yet. However, from the statistics shown, it won't be long until it consumes its one and only real competitor (Firefox):

I am involved in lots of very diverse niches and currently my data is 'skewed' in favour of IE and Firefox. Maybe the use of Chrome is growing but I hope not because Google has too much of a monopoly as it is.

Those stats are not reliable across the board as it states on the site

"W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to the browser that comes preinstalled with their computer, and do not seek out other browser alternatives. These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is a more popular browser."

Truth is Internet Explorer is still the most popular (way out ahead) and unlike earlier years its a pretty good browser. liking 9 quite a bit.

Browser Statistics[/QUOTE]Those stats are HIGHLY skewed.

The people who use w3, are typically technical people. Who tend to use FF or Chrome. Many/Most people use the default browser. (I switched my mom to FF 'cuz FB runs better. She loves that FB.)

My stats still show IE above and beyond the other. Chrome isnt in the running.

I'd like to see Amazon, Yahoo, Google, MSN, ESPN, Wikipedia, Facebook, Youtube, etc. stats.

Although, stats also indicate that IE has been experiencing a steady decline for years. And, Firefox has started to show consistent decline this year. Google Chrome continues to grow.

I have been using IE since I first started online YEARS ago, but in the last 6 weeks or so, it just keeps stopping, and restarting which is SO annoying.

I decided to try chrome, and I'm reasonably happy. The thing I don't like is I believe passes alot of data back to google.

FF still has better plugins for it than Chrome, depending on what you want to do.

If Chrome wanted to totally dominate, all they have to do is to create a browser that can use a different proxy in each open tab all at the same time (no switching). this would be a dominating factor for many in the IM area to make a permanent move - also for software devs to target Chrome rather than IE.

I am not holding my breath on that one, because Google likely sees such a feature as a license to spam accounts, bookmarks etc.

So the Google monopoly will extend to web browsers. Even more targeted adverts for the users? More info gathered about your web browsing habits. Do you really want Google to completely dominate the internet? It's not a case of which is the better browser it's the fact we have a choice. Long may we continue to have a choice.

What i haven't seen mentioned in this thread.

There are millions and millions of people and companies still running
older operating systems. the older operating systems cannot run
google chrome. If i remember properly even most win xp cannot run it,

That gives both IE and FF a huge leg up, for a long time to come.

OS conversions is a slow process, for large companies, and those in the middle to lower class economic households.

Based on that alone, it will be literally years, before chrome can truly claim
      market domination.

    Will Google "kill" Mozilla?
I don't think so since Google pays Mozilla for a reason, not out of the goodness of their heart. If they stopped paying Mozilla they would lose access to a huge amount of market data, costing them untold millions of dollars.

It would also give Microsoft an opportunity to potentially cut into their market share.

I was reading an article, don't have link, Saturday that mozilla made a new deal with google for over 300 million for default search engine placement in Firefox. Yahoo I believe it was, backed out when the bidding got too high. Microsoft I think is the company that caused the bidding to go high for it's bing SE.

Haven't read the article in the OP but thought this was a strange thread after reading about that this weekend.

Edit - I see, article dated December 10th 2011.. This new 300+ million deal came after that, still don't have link to that though.

I don't necessarily think Chrome will kill of Firefox. It will definitely take a lot of it's market share.

Most of Firefox's downfall is it's own doing, lately, it's been really buggy. I have been a faithful Firefox user for several years. Because it crashes so much, I switch to Chrome, a lot more stable.

The browser usage depends on the audience. Less computer literate groups tend to use what they are handed over by the operating system and they mostly use IE (and Safari when they happen to use a Mac), while those who are more aware and informed, use Firefox or Opera.

Since Chrome is more of a snooping tool than a browser, i don't consider it as an option. Well, maybe I will give it a thought if I have to choose between Chrome and stop browsing the internet.

G can have all the monopoly they want, if Mozilla and MS can serve a small crowd between them, I would always be a part of that minority.

To answer your question, I don't think it is in the hands of Google to "kill" Mozilla. If Mozilla is smart enough, they will fight back even if they lose Google's business. They have a very good product.
