Ready to get started, so much to learn!

Hi everyone! I am absolutely brand new to the concept of affiliate marketing and am ready to jump in and get started. I only know from what I have read surfing around the last couple of days, and it is a minefield for a beginner like me! It seems like every advice article I read just wants me to buy a product....don't want to be scammed...I know a little about marketing, as I am a product marketing manager for a biotech company, so I can grasp concepts. However I know NOTHING about HTML or building a website. I was thinking of having Jennifer Clason build me one just to get started, to get my feet wet, so to speak. Is this a good way to start? She seems to get a lot of positive feedback. I will be relying on you all in the upcoming months to help me. ANY information, or good links to information, will be appreciated! There is so much to learn and it is overwhelming!
Thanks!
Jon

You should only rely on yourself, not on others...

This is the best advice I can tell you.

If I were you, before jumping in I would first find out how it all works (at least the basics). Learn about market research, keyword research, and product research. And a bit SEO won't hurt...

If you will treat affiliate marketing seriously, you should consider paying serious attention to your market research and product research. Those 2 are very important because you will get to know what the people in your market need or are trying to solve, and the product research will tell you what product is ideal for your target market.

When you get to know what your market needs and the product they should get, then it's just a matter of determining how you will reach your target market. And that's where keyword research comes into play along with some other traffic generation methods.

Always bear in mind you will be dealing with real people with real problems.

    I hope that helps.

Kudos to you for wanting to learn HTML! Smart marketers should always know how to get stuff into sales pages and the like.

Here are some of my fav resources for learning HTML:

Lissa Explains it All -- HTML Help and Tutorial for Kids
(ignore the offers that come up - the page itself has fantastic benefits!)

    HTML Tutorial
HTML 101: Back to Basics | WebReference

    Hope that helps!

    Welcome to the forum!

Yes, there's a lot of scams out there. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is read some neutral, unbiased information on affiliate marketing. Learn the basics about how it works, where to get traffic, the best ways to build a list and get conversions, etc. from someone who doesn't want to sell you something. Then, if you feel it's necessary, you can purchase a product or two in the future. To start with though, just read as much as you can but don't buy anything. All of the nuts and bolts of affiliate marketing are available for free.

I know a little about marketing, as I am a product marketing manager for a biotech company, so I can grasp concepts. However I know NOTHING about HTML or building a website.
This can all be outsourced if you don't want to deal with it yourself. I do suggest that you pick up a beginner book on HTML/CSS and PHP (or read free tutorials online). This is just so that you 1) know what your outsourcers are doing, how hard it's likely to be, and about how long it should take and 2) so that you can fix minor problems yourself or make simple adjustments to your site without having to spend any money on it.

HTML is simple to pick up and CSS is just an extension of it. Neither is anything to be afraid of and you can learn the absolute basics in an afternoon or two. PHP is closer to actual programming so it's a fair bit more complex. You don't actually need to understand either on a deep level though--you just want a very general overview of things. You don't need to be able to actually use any of it, but you should be familiar with them.

I was thinking of having Jennifer Clason build me one just to get started, to get my feet wet, so to speak. Is this a good way to start? She seems to get a lot of positive feedback.
I'm not familiar with her myself but if others seem genuinely happy with her work and her prices are reasonable then I don't see why you shouldn't do it. Just have a clear idea of what you want the site for before you spend any money. Simply having a site isn't going to make you any money--you still need to know how to get traffic to it, have an offer that converts visitors into buyers (or subscribers if you're building a list--which you should be), etc.

I will be relying on you all in the upcoming months to help me. ANY information, or good links to information, will be appreciated! There is so much to learn and it is overwhelming!
My advice is to learn anything and everything you can about traffic generation. Without traffic, nothing else matters. You could have the worst converting site in the world but if you send a million visitors to it a month, you're bound to make some money.

Once you can reliably get traffic to a site, then you can worry about all of the other factors that come into play such as converting that traffic to buyers.

I will advise you go for article syndication.

Simply write high quality article of at least 700 words.

First post these articles on your website or blog before submitting them to article directories to be republished by webmasters

Submit to ezinearticles and other article directories such as articlesbase, goarticles.

Make sure you have a highly converting product you are marketing

Make sure your blog is highly converting so that your visitors buy what you are marketing.

Its a bit more complicated than this but this is just for starters.Wish you the best all the same.

        Hi,

Here are some tips to help you:

1 - If anyone is selling you a 'get rich over night' product, close the window, those products are not worth your time.

2 - In the beginning use WordPress as your base, the sites you will be able to launch are much more professional and you can get plugins for almost anything you require.

3 - Put up a site, you can keep learning for years, but you need to take action ASAP, so after you have read this post, go and get any domain from godaddy.com, host it at hostgator.com and install your WordPress blog. It will take you less than an hour to get online.

4 - Once you are online, write about your hobbies and stuff you enjoy, just to find your way around.

5 - Once you feel comfortable with the whole thing consider a marketing strategy.

Stop buying products. Just find a profitable affiliate program, get a link from them and go out and promote it online.

Pay per click is one of the best ways to go because it gets you results FAST.

It seems every "advice" article I read has a Buy Now button at the bottom of the article I am just worried about the initial outlay of money required. How much should I be paying per month for web hosting for one or two websites to get started?
