Made my first sale today and it feels A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry and had to rub my eyes a couple of times, but when I opened up my Amazon affiliates account I saw a sale.

Now I'm certainly no whiz kid internet marketer. I'm very new but learning heaps quickly, especially from the WF (so I owe this sale to you guys really ). I just want other newbies out there to know if you put the graft in, it really does pay off.

My background is in recruitment (I'm a headhunter working freelance) but I've been tinkering with affiliate marketing since March 2011. Learning the ropes, reading, procrastinating, making a few half hearted attempts and all that stuff. However, it wasn't until early November 2011 that I decided to stop the tinkering and actually do some constructive work.

Within a couple of weeks I had managed to get 5 of my keywords on to the first and second page of Google, which is no mean feat especially with weight loss being my niche (that's a whole market in itself). I haven't even been backlinking that crazily, just around about 10 backlinks per day. I'm looking at dominating the top 3 slots for Google for these keywords and I'm not too far off.

I used to question what the heck I was doing - me a noob, trying to get anywhere with a weight loss site. It seemed the whole world and her sister was on to that one. But then one day everything just seemed to click. The key is in the keyword research, get that right and you will find profitable sub niches beyond your wildest dreams.

Thanks for reading my little ramble.

      1. Do you have only one website?

Just the one site at the moment but I'm building it into an authority site, with plans to create smaller sites. I just want to focus on getting this site to a point where I am making consistent sales before moving on with other projects.

      2. Do you promote diet pills?

Diet pills ... Although I do have a few on the site they are not what I focus on. Far too many sites already cover diet pills.

      3. How many products do you promote in one website?

It's a growing site so the possibilities are endless. At the moment I have 10 products.

      4. Do you make product reviews?

Absolutely! My reviews tend to be between 700 to 2000 words (Yes 2000 words for one review may seem like a like a lot but it was just the one and it was a 'top 10' list type review).

      5. Do you add your personel story?

I write in a style as though I were chatting to a friend, so yes I personalise the sell.

      Hope I've answered your questions

Absolutely Vlad. I know I have a lot of work to do and will not stop putting in the effort. I'm a long way from being a business success just yet. But what that one sale gave me was confidence and motivation to carry on.

      Hey there Deb, thank you!

I have just the one site so far and that has 30 pages excluding the legal pages and contact form (not a lot of content but I'm working on it). Some of those are full on product reviews. Some are informational with links to the reviews, some are just purely informational.

Tend to have one keyword per page but I've only concentrated on ranking about about 7 pages in terms of my backlinking strategy. I'm finding that the pages I haven't done much work with are also hitting pages 2, 3 and 4 of Google and I've not even started to rank for those keywords yet.

      Hope that answers your questions

I feel all warm and fuzzy lol and totally hear where you're coming from. I didn't quite get to the stage of thinking about giving up but I had serious words with myself, many a time.

My issue was and still is trying to stay focused on one thing and not listening to the little voices in my head that say 'hey you should build a site on this' or 'why not start something in that niche'. I'll get there all in good time, but for now I just need to really tune in and invest my time in scaling up whatever it was I did on this site to get that first sale. It may have been a fluke sale but it was a fluke sale which has given me great hope.

So don't give up, go out there all guns blazing and prove to yourself you can do this and that you deserve to be successful doing it.

      Wish you all the best.

      Haydn
      Sure Haydn

      - Forum posting and blog commenting on niche relevant sites with active traffic

      - Social bookmarking. I use Onlywire and Social Monkee.

      - Hubpages. I only have 2 hubs but both of those are on the first page of Google for their respective keywords and climbing nicely (I build backlinks to those too). Although I don't see much traffic from them I'm really using them for link juice and if I make a £ or 2 from the content then great.

I just set myself a target of getting 10 -20 backlinks each day. Nothing big, nothing fancy.

And that's been it! Talk about keeping it simple. But I do want to scale up the backlinking from other sources so I can stay on top. I'm also exploring RSS syndication (is that the correct term?) and social publishing sites like Scribd.

Really I guess I invest the bulk of my time in researching low comp, high volume keywords, so getting my pages to rank quickly and highly is fairly straightforward.

      Hope that helps.

    Its good to see results.

Just keep tracking and testing eveything, soon you will know what works and what doesnt. Then just spend more time and effort on the things that work....go to elance and video tape what you do, and get others to do it for you...meaning upscale and outsource and see even more profits. SIMPLE.

Wish you all the luck in the world and plent of more sales to come your way soon. :-)

      Hey SEObabe!

Congats!!! It really does feel awesome to have that first break through doesn't it? Now that you know your site has visitors, have you considered having an opt in form to get subscribers so that you can do email marketing to your list.

One way to get them to subscribe to you is to offer something free, maybe a free ebook on the basics of weight loss or a recipe book on weight loss.
