The True Meaning of Christmas Rant...

I know that sometimes we get in discussions about the definition of free (as in having to provide an email address to get a report is not free), or the definition of value (as in sending only offers to buy things is not enough value and not what we had in mind when we signed up for a newsletter with valuable updates) or ethics (as in it's not a lie if it doesn't hurt anyone), etc. etc. etc.

But this one takes the cake for pushing definitions to the edge and hurling them over. I received an email with mention of a late Christmas gift. Wow!

Know what it was? A guru decided to reopen his recent product launch because people couldn't get in due to being busy for the holidays.

There is no way that anyone with any sense could say that this is any kind of Christmas gift. If I wanted it bad enough I would have put off my shopping for 10 minutes to make the purchase and so would everyone else.

No I'm not going to unsubscribe because generally there's some good stuff I get from this guy. Which makes it even more curious - why would you call this a gift? Did the launch really go so bad or the post Christmas credit card blues are so bad that we have to claim that the opportunity to buy something is a Christmas gift? Reeks of desperation to me.

Even though I said "rant" I'm really not worked up about it. Doesn't matter to me what someone else does in their business for the most part.

What I do is take situations like this as learning experiences.

Copywriters use a "swipe" file that they use which has helpful phrases, headlines, and wording that is proven to work.

Maybe we need an "unswipe" file - things to avoid like the plague in our own businesses.
