How To Keep Your Downline Motivated?

A lot of internet marketers have built downlines and even newbies who have the motivation to do what it take to start building one have wondered this very thing. Most of them end up getting people in but never truly seeing any duplication and wondering why. Leaving then to wonder how to keep their downlines motivated.

I was asked this very question by some of the people in our business and had to tell them the unfortunate truth that most uplines refuse to tell them. The reality here is that people must keep themselves motivated! The BEST kind of person you want on your team is someone who is teachable, is ambitious, and who likes to serve other people.

One can have success with having only ambition, but they will limit their income because they aren't open to learning from you and other team leaders, and they'll have poor retention in their Downline if they treat their Downline poorly.

One can also have success with having only teach ability, but they will have slow growth without ambition, sometimes flattening out for lack of a reason to change their current situation. One can also have success with having only a liking & caring for others, but their income will grow very slowly without trying to learn new skills.

To be very successful in this industry, a good blend of ambition to drive their life in the desired direction, open to learning new skills, and enough care for people to put other's needs before their own is what allows one to create a full time income.

One of the best (and hardest) lessons I had to learn is that I can't make someone else want this, I can't make them ambitious, etc. I can't give them the desire to want to get out of their job, put in extra time, money, emotions, and energy into their business...

I CAN lead by example and show people what's possible for them, but it's ultimately up to them to make the decision to take control of their own financial future. As Jim Rohn says, "You can help 1,000 people, but you can't carry 1 on your back. You may be strong enough to carry 1, and someone with super human strength may even carry 2...but you can't carry 3..."

In summary, no matter how much you want to help someone else, if they're not willing to help themselves; if they don't have the ambition to learn new skills and work extra hours on their business or invest some extra dollars; if they won't create the emotional strength to be 100% responsible for their own actions...

They will fail at ANY business, and ultimately live a life of mediocrity. (Whether it's in this business, another business being successful at their "JOB" career, etc.)

    Find people who motivate themselves.

You can never really motivate people externally for more than a few minutes at a time.

So stop trying to motivate them, and find people who are self-motivated, then give them the guidance they need to be successful.

Funny Bill that is exactly what I said... You can only guide and spend time training people who are motivated to succeed themselves. All kinds of people might find different levels of success but only those who are self-motivated are worth the time to spend training and guiding to be leaders. Those are the people we work hard to attract.

      LOL

That always happens when I skim... :p

Another fallacy is that most people who think their job is to motivate others are the very people who cannot even motivate themselves...

If you're looking to motivate and inspire others, you MUST start with yourself first. People look for a leader. Be that person and make sure you're motivated and inspired to do the same to your downline. They look up to you. So it's important to be there for them and give them the leadership they are looking for.

You both have very valid points and I could not agree with you more. I feel that it is simply a waste of time to make an attempt to motivate others. I am simply not looking for people that need to be motivated to be honest.

I am looking for people who are motivated. As you mentioned before those are the true leaders and those are the people worth spending your time on. This is not to say that people cannot grow to be leaders but this is to say that the true sign of a real leader is someone who is self-motivated and that takes action without you having to tell them to do so.

These are the kind of people you want to attract and of course you attract like kind it is simply a law of nature.
