Do you focus on subscribing or on the free report?

When people land to your squeeze page/landing page designed for opting in, do you focus on the benefits if they subscribe or on the free report?

I ask this because I think that if you keep pushing on people that they should put their emails so they'll receive a download link will lower the email opening rate because all they want is the freebie.

Of course in the free pdf you tell them that this free pdf is just a piece of the puzzle and the rest is coming through emails but still.

I see this on a lot of websites, they focus mainly on the free pdf you receive and not on the newsletters and it should be the other way around or at least balanced.

That's because many people don't know what will they do with their newsletter list, or in other words, what will they send to their list... but they do know what is that report about...

I think you have a point here... everyone should know what benefits will subscribers get from being members of that particular list, and that should be listed on squeeze page... free report should just be an additional gift and not the reason for joining some newsletter...

I think also that people don't want to scare subscribers off by making them feel they will be bombarded with emails. Even (maybe especially) outside the IM space, people don't want to feel like they are being constantly spammed. So focusing on what they get for free makes it seem less aggressive in terms of what they might receive in their inboxes.

Good point though. There should be a way to blend the two for maximum benefit.

I focus on the benefits. If folks think I'm sending too many emails, they're free to unsubscribe.

      Someone posted this yesterday:

» 500+ Places to Syndicate Your Content

I saved it because I thought the feature box showed a good mix of freebie + benefits, though I'm going to add a picture of the freebie to it.

My most responsive lists don't receive a free report, or ebook, or whitepaper, or whatever you want to call it.

I have one list (it's not huge, but big enough to get some data) that I simply tell them to sign up and receive exclusive content through email that I don't post on the site.

I get open rates on this list of over 60% regularly. Just for a test I sent a survey monkey survey last night at 11:30pm, right in the middle of when people are winding down from christmas, getting ready for new year, and generally on vacation.

I'd say 90% of the people on this subscribe with their work email due to the market it's in.

Anyway, it's 9:30 now, and 20% of the list has already taken and completed the entire survey.

Sorry for the long answer. But I like to be the setting the expectations for my list. They know they're going to get awesome stuff, they know I'm going to sell to them, and they also know that if they reply to one my emails I'm actually going to answer it.

        Not sure if that helps.
