Buying websites procedure?

Hello All

I am looking to buy a few websites but not sure on the procedure, like hiding the whois right away

I was thinking of flippa but could someone advise me on what I do to transfer a domain to me?

For example, do i need to have hosting ready and as I mentioned, how do i have the whois hidden right away?

Many Thanks, I am bit lost

Dave

    Hey Dave,

If you're looking to buy a website, Flippa is the place you want to go. Typically, the seller will assist you with the transfer of the site. If you look in the description of the auction, sellers usually list what comes with the site. For example, many of them will offer you "x" months of free hosting with your purchase. Site flippers usually set these sites up to make the transfer process as simple as possible. They simply transfer the domain name into your name and then give you the passwords to access the site.

As far as hiding the whois. There's pros and cons to doing that, but I'll leave that for another thread. So let's say the domain was registered at GoDaddy. After you buy the site, the easiest thing for you to do would be create a free account at GoDaddy. Then the current owner simply transfers the domain from his account to yours. This transaction happens immediately, but it sometimes takes a 6 - 12 hours before the domain shows up in your account. Once it does, you can then purchase the WhoIs protection for a few extra dollars per year. If you choose to use a different registrar, for example NameCheap, you can also transfer the name from one registrar to another, but you will incur a fee in the process. That's why I suggest creating an account at the registrar where the domain is presently registered - most registrars allow transfer between accounts for free.

Good luck with you project and keep us posted on your progress!

rusty1027 advice was excellent... I just wanted to add that when you purchase a site at Flippa make sure you have the person you buy it from transfers it to your hosting account right away. A lot of sellers on Flippa offer free hosting. Since hosting is so cheap now there is no reason to keep your site on the sellers hosting account.

I kept one site I purchased on the seller's hosting and lost the site. One day I tried to login and couldn't. I tried to contact the person I bought the site from but never received a response.

One tip I have for you regarding hiding Who Is.
Never purchase the add on for Who Is via your domain registrar.
This is normally expensive and a rip off.

First find a company that will allow you to have a forwarding address or to scan your mail and send it to you via email.

For example I use a site called scanmypost in the UK. It costs around £10 a year if you dont receive a lot of post. If you are using just for registering websites then you shouldn't get a lot of post anyway. This is a one off cost and can cover hundreds of domains.

Compare this cost to some domain registrars that charge $10 or more for 2 years Who Is Protection.

      So Id suggest

Step 1 ) Set up a forwarding address
Step 2 ) Set your whois details to this address
