Is Craigslist a good way to generate traffic?

Is Craigslist a good way to generate traffic? I have read that Craigslist does not like when you place a lot of ads on their site. Is this true?
Also what are some other ways to generate traffic to my website?

Craigslist is a great way to get traffic IF you can get your ads to stick. Once you have the traffic you also need to know how to convert it. (Think CPA offers)

It works well for offline business offers and CPA offers.

As a local offline business owner, I agree that Craigslist can be very effective. For 2 years now, my #1 form of advertising has been posting in CL 2x a week. Prior to that, I was advertising my service in an area newspaper.

The difference in response? Was almost immediate, like night n' day....
To the tune of 500% increase in phone calls, not to mention email inquiries.

Last spring, I added a Google Places page and put the link to it in my CL ad. Over time, the number of inquiries continues to grow.

To boot, Craigslist is free to post whereas the newspaper costs.

With a portion of the money saved, I found someone who loves being on the internet, to do the posting for $5/week. It only takes 7 or 8 minutes a week to do, so my "outsource help" is effectively earning $50+ per hour for their time.

So as far as CL goes, it's been win-win!

Macmiller, hi, do u use craiglist. I intend to promote a CPA offer. Can I put the url of a landing a page on the craiglist ad, further explaining the offer. Or is it better i put my email and set up an autoresponse. Thanks

Yes you can put your landing page link in the ad. I use image ads.

Craigslist is a snap. To place multitudes of ads you simply buy several no-contract phones and you will be allowed to post 2-3 ads per day per phone number. example: 10 numbers = 30 DIFFERENT ads = TRAFFIC = You're welcome.

Instead of a prepaid phone, could you just use a virtual number? Skype has them for $3 and phone dot com also has numbers for $5. Just curious if that would work as well?

Craigslist would be a good way to generate traffic if they were tolerant of people using the site for that purpose.

Although it can be useful if you don't need to post a lot of ads.

I'm afraid it isn't nearly as simple as that. I don't recommend battling CL on the spam front. They are so stringent that even regular users often complain of running into limitations.

Craigslist is hard to get any huge amounts of traffic. They block you from posting in other cities.

You can get a bunch of vps and post from other locations. But this takes some skill.

Post wherever you like - Hint: -ProxyServers-
Also, you will need to post DIFFERENT ads from different accounts (1ph# + 1@ + 1proxy = CL gets pWNd) , as in "same ad, different text".
Craigslist works but YOU have to work Craigslist.

Example" It's about noon, I made my post this morning at about 8 for one of my cafepress feeder sites and already sold 4 t-shirts, 1 wall clock and 1 complete sweatsuit, which just earned me $38 USD which is actually better than my avg. $35 USD ph revenue rate so I can take that extra $3 from the 8am-9am time frame and spend it at in/out burger for lunch.

Last week Thursday I posted to CL for a local plastic surgeon (Here in the west they are like blades of grass, as in there are a lot), she called to confirm a lead just now and I will get my $250 from that once the lead pays for the service.

That is the power of CL

wow this just opened up a lot of ideas for me, I never attempted to use craiglist for traffic because of all the loops you have to go through, but I think it is worth it because the traffic is already in "buy mode" and if you know the "buyer lifecycle" this is a big plus.

        Thanks for the tip Hardnova.

My first internet marketing job was posting on Craigslist and it is like pulling teeth to get your ads to stick!!

Yeah, even 'regular users' run into problems because Craigslist is incredibly picky on that.

Here's what I had to do:

        Rotate my IP address.
Create 5 gmail accounts, which is all that Gmail would allow before rotating the IP address again.
Convert those 5 gmail accounts to Craigslist accounts.
Post the ad in 5 places.
About 2 of the ads would stick.
Rotate my IP address again. Rinse and repeat.

To get that many 'believable' Gmail accounts, I used the names of Magic cards. (me geek...)

Luckily for that, I didn't have to write the ads myself. The guy I was posting them for did that, but we had to spin them up the wazoo.

Craigslist has since 'fixed' this, but one technique we used to create text that Craigslist would accept as non-duplicate was this: we had a program that would take random Wikipedia text, color it white, and stick it under the ad. This was my very first web job, and is pretty much why I don't do spam at all. Spam doesn't work very well and is not any easier than 'real' advertising!!!!

The most annoying thing to check for was 'Green Ghosting', where Craigslist would give you the 'green' for 'your ad is up', but it actually wasn't. It was just up if you put in the address to the ad itself, it wasn't on the list locally.

Very irritating experience, especially because what we were doing was trying to sell a multi million dollar house to buyers across the globe, and Craigslist made it *really really really* hard.

No.. VOIP's and virtual numbers do not work with the phone verification.

Not necessarily. I don't use a bunch of VPS and I don't post from different locations, you just need to understand craigslist, and know how to make it work.

You're right that craigslist is powerful but many proxies do not work. You have to understand the different levels of proxies, and what works and what doesn't. Most proxies will still keep you ghosting. I post a ton of ads a day, with no proxy. Craigslist does not ban your IP, this is just misinformation given by people who don't know what they're talking about and suggest you need proxies in order to post multiple ads. Simply untrue. Most people that say craigslist doesn't work, are people that are too lazy to figure it out.

For beginners... I wouldn't recommend trying proxies. Craigslist has an automated system set up for ghosting. I'm tired of repeating the things to look for, so please use the search function in the forum and you will have enough info that a WSO can be made of it.

No, google voice does not work with craigslist. You can try a real landline service like attlines, but even then the numbers are 50/50 chance of working. My last order of 75 numbers, only about 20 I had no problems with. Still haven't had my other numbers replaced by them... Probably tired of me. lol.

Best thing to do is to hire overseas posters and not worry about posting at all. Or hire anyone! Just pay other people to do it.

Getting ads to stick on CL is a job. And if you want to do 50-100+ a day, it will take a while. Thats not the "internet lifestyle!"

Some CPA networks have a no CL traffic policy. Some don't.

Not against any government law though.

Go on fiverr and send a pm to people that have a gigs with good reviews (but not too many reviews, you want to find people that need work instead of people already swamped with buyers). Offer to pay them $5 for each ad (or 2 ads) they post for you in their city. You want to find people to hire that aren't already posting on Craiglist because if they post more than a couple times a day their ip/computer will get ghosted.

I've found gigs that give 3 ads for $5. Could be even better deals. Especially from other seas. Just because they have done a lot, doesn't mean you shouldn't order from them. Can mean they know what they are doing.

Make sure to message the person before ordering though, to find out how you will get the responses. One person I was interested in, said he would not forward any replies the ad got by email. So make sure to ask how you will get the leads.

sure, of course, craigslistis will bring you a lot of free target traffic. This is a wonderful promotional method by this kind of free classified ads site. But I think it is necessary to place too many ones on the site, just post several ones everyday for the update,It is enough.I think you may try the other sites which is similar to craigslistis to get more visitors.Like oodle.inetgiant etc.You can also get more traffic by posting quality articles to article directories and join forums.

Only way I have ever had luck with craigslist is to hire a CL poster to do my ads. I don't have time to sit there and repost and reword ect ads all day and try to get them to stick to 12 different metropolitan areas.
Yes there are hundreds of ways to get traffic, you know that though, that is what your signature is for, but I will humor myself anyways... Rent an email list to start your list. Some say they do not work, I dissagree, If you can find one that will do the emails for you and have been opened more than a year, then there usually legit. If they offer a guaranteed open rate for the email then there a keeper. A clickthrough rate is better though. Then you have forum and blog marketing, facebook and twitter.

I would like to say one thing though, except for the CL poster all ways take time money and lots and lots of effort, If you start from A 01/01/2012 and work your way to 12/31/2012 and don't get sidetracked and track your results, you will amaze yourself at your progress and your bank statement.

If you sell physical goods and services in your local community, or you hire people in your local community (offering a real job), then Craigslist cannot be beat.

If you are trying to sell internet-only products and services or use it for traffic, it really isn't much good for anything. Regular users are always on heightened alert for spam, and they usually knock it down in minutes, not hours.

That's the big problem with CL. Users can knock anything down. So if you have a service or product, even local and go by all of CL's rules, but some people don't like it, disagree with it, or are your competitors, they can knock it down.

    1. Getting the ads to stick for any length of time. I like 23 hours at least.
    2. Keeping the ad at the top of the listing.

If you can do those two things you can drive alot of traffic to your site.
Best way to do it is hire an experienced CL poster. They have software that helps them. Like I said I only require 23 hour visibility but remember now Im hitting about 20 large areas on CL with the same link, I can generate quite a bit of traffic if its a great niche.

Craigslist has added a dealer option to several more Categories. They use to have it just on Furniture. I was able to get some add posted today with no problem. I used the dealer link instead of owner link. It generated alot of traffic. Has anyone else notice that?

I agree that CL is a good place for you to get more traffic. Make sure that you follow their guidelines in posting an ad, so that it will stay longer and you get some possible leads there.

The one thing I don't like about CL is, they don't allow you to crosspost. Which makes it difficult when you're offering services. I placed an ad about my writing stories gig yesterday. I put it up in the SF Bay Area(where we're from). Now, I'm looking at other cities & seeing what type of writers they're requesting.

I've been using CL for years, for many different purposes. It can be hit & miss. Definitely alot of fakes & flakes. I've discovered it's not just around here. Friends in other states & countries have said the same. There's also those on there who enjoy flagging listings. For example, last year, my husband & I were selling our car & I was being honest about our situation, but, I kept having people respond that my ad wasn't real. It takes time(which, when you're in need, you don't always have)& determination, but, it can pan out.

Used to be easy as hell. Now CL have tightened up its a bit of a nightmare to post without outsourcing it. If you have multiple phone numbers it somewhat works...I had two and still found a lot of my ads being ghosted...so I don't bother anymore.

Yeah this is really unfortunate, kind of ruins it for most marketers.

Here is a tip for you. You can go to the Dollar store and pick up what's called a Trac Phone...you will get 20 minutes for each phone you purchase. When you set up your Craigslist account and you place your first ad they will ask you to verify the account using your phone...this takes less then a minutes use of your 20 minutes that you have. You can change the phone number anytime you want, so you should be able to get 30 or more accounts with just this one phone. Give it a try.

        Hope this helps,
        Dan

      I completely agree.

At the beginning of the year, I was using Craigslist a lot, and it was more of a headache than it was worth.

Supposedly if you confirm your phone number, it was good for 90 days or so. I had 4 accounts going with 4 numbers. No big deal. Then after a couple weeks or so, I was confirming numbers almost daily. I was only posting 3 ads per day.

I also noticed if you were in a large area, like LA, there were competitors intentionally flagging ads to get them removed so theirs would show up more. So many others were complaining about it.

      Not worth it anymore.

Craigslist is still an awesome way to generate leads. The thing is you need a way to change your ip address. I fought through all the problems in posting on Craigslist and developed a system that easily avoids ghosting. I can even show you how you don't have to buy phone numbers ever again.

Craigslist is really hard to use for traffic generation these days. There are so many other ways to drive traffic out there that I wonder if it's really worth it to everything you have to do to post enough ads to make it worthwhile.

    Hey vjboc,

Craigslist is definitely a GREAT source for new business. You'll get alot of junk leads but if your aggressive you can land a few nice deals.

I closed over $20k worth of web design business just from Craigslist in 2011 - so no doubt Craigslist is a great traffic source!

    Consistency is important!

    Best of luck,
    Ahmad

If you can have thousands of ads posted per day then it can be ok, I guess.

Personally I think social media will weild the same results with less work.

In my opinion Craiglist is not worth anymore.
I tried it for 1 month, posting ads everyday on different zones, and I didn't get a single list submission.
I agree that it is a very fast traffic source to use as an addition to your strategies, you can post your 3 ads per day in less than 10 minutes but in my case in particular, it didn't work so I left it behind.
    Regards!

I would go for craiglist too , but wouldn't it be better for you to have ads as many places as possible ? Besides craiglist, I also go for UsFreeAds . It is a nice web and does not cost much . If you are not interested in it, you can always look up on Alexa and it will tell you which one has the most traffic !

Hope I helped, and good luck !
