Realistic Goal-Setting For Newbies

Hello Newbies,

I made this post to help you stay focused and motivated on the new online business you plan to start or have already started. Goal-setting is so important that it could be the major factor why your business will fail or succeed.

When you are starting out, it is very easy to dive in thinking you will make $10,000's right from the start. This is because sales letters and income claims deviate you from being realistic.

Don't get me wrong. Many business models can make you rich. Probably the business model you are following can make you rich, but it doesn't happen over night. You have to go one step at a time and that's what I'm going to help you with in this post.

I am going to help you keep things in perspective while you learn your way towards riches.

Realistic Goal-Setting (one step at a time)

1st Goal: Start by making enough to cover your start-up expenses.

Ask yourself: "What are my start-up expenses? How much do I need to invest in order to start?"

Let's say your start-up expenses are a domain name and a hosting plan. Let's assume you invest $10 on a domain name and $10 for your first month of hosting. That means your goal for the first month should be to make enough money online to cover your domain and hosting expenses ($20).

Note: I am assuming you've never made money online. $20 may not be much, but it is a meaningful milestone for those just starting out. If you make more than you invested, consider it as a bonus or count it towards your next goal.

2nd Goal: Make enough money to cover your internet service.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying you will actually pay your internet service bill with the money you make online. You will only consider it for goal-setting.

Let's say your internet service is somewhere around $50. Well, your 2nd goal will be to make $10 to cover this month's hosting expense, plus another $50 that "covers" your internet service.

Note: It doesn't need to be your internet service. You could cover any other monthly expense you have. I repeat, I am not saying you will pay a bill with the money you make online. You will only consider it for goal-setting. I encourage you to re-invest the money you make online into your online business.

3rd Goal: Make enough money to cover each household monthly expense.

If you have completed your 2nd goal, you should already have an idea of how to multiply your income. So your third goal will be to multiply your income little by little until it covers each of your household monthly expenses.

Note: I repeat, you use monthly expenses for goal-setting. I am not saying you will pay your bills with the money you make online. At this point you should consider re-investing some of the money you've made to expand or improve your business. You could start investing in autoresponders, software, or any other tools that will help your business grow quicker and stronger.

4th Goal: Make enough money to cover ALL your expenses.

Once you have reached the 3rd goal, it should be fairly easy to complete your 4th goal. If you have followed my advice to re-invest your money on tools that will help you grow your business, this 4th goal should be a piece of cake.

Also, by now you should already have enough knowledge to know how to increase your income with your new tools to the point where it covers all your expenses.

5th Goal: Double your income.

I don't need to tell you much at this point. Probably all you need to do is find a new niche and do the same you have already done. Probably you just need to launch a new product or find new JV's. Whatever you do, your 5th goal is to double your income.

From this point on... The sky is the limit.

This is where interesting things start to happen because it could mean you will now be able to quit your job, spend more time with your family, do the things you love, you can afford more vacation time, among other great things.

Conclusion:

I hope you see things from a new perspective now. It's not about $100/day. I mean $100/day is a great goal and you could get there. But when you are able to make a relationship between your online income and the real world around you, it makes much more sense.

Every single one of you is different. Each of you have different needs and circumstances. So I made these goals attainable for anyone, based on their own situation.

Frankie, I think you just helped a lot of newbies today. And maybe given some hope and perspective to some not-so-newbies who might be discouraged. Well done...

I've been on this forum since 2006; mostly lurking.

You've hit the nail on the head. So many times we IMers are looking to make that $10,000.00 a month goal when in reality we need to take baby steps that are achievable and do-able. It is so easy to feel like a failure for not making a gazillion in one month "like everyone else." I'd much rather focus on do-able goals such as covering basic expenses as outlined in your post. Your goals are realistic!

Thank you for bringing reality back to the new folks and those of us who have been online a while. Great, common-sense advice!

Very good advice. I think it’s so important to have baby steps. The hardest part is getting that first sale. After that it’s just a matter or rinsing & repeating!

Thank you all for your great response to my post. I hope this helps everyone who reads it to realize that being realistic with goal-setting will be a great way to stay motivated, focused and feel successful even when you have not made $10,000/month.

Really good advice OP. I find that setting out small steps as realistic goals averts failure. More importantly I am always amazed at how quickly adding all the small steps together gets you where you want to be (if that makes sense?!). Thanks again for reinforcing this fundamental mindset.
