Would it be classed as "spamming" if I asked you all to add me as a friend on Facebook?

Please advise - I only really discovered this a couple of days agi and don't know for the life of me why I haven't used it before!

    With Today's internet that is a fine line...IMHO

    For instance sites like Linkedin (a professional networking site)

    people asking for invites without being classified as a "open networker"
    are looked down upon and not accepted and sometimes classified as spam.

    I would approach it with caution

    Hey, Rich -

    IMO... even though your question relates to the exact way people do it within the FB community [sending out friend requests to others] ... I think that is probably a decision only Allen can make... [as far as making a post to ask people to do it.]

    One caveat -- in my experience on FB, I get friend requests from people I don't personally know... and I first check out their profile so there are no axe murderers or "father rapers" [thank you, Arlo Guthrie] ... and then I look at the friends we have in common... and more times than not, it is the friends we have in common that is the 'bridge.'

    That said, making a blanket request post to hundreds of people here all at one time with no 'bridge' between you... well that might be interpreted as forum spam even if you are a member in good standing here and on FB.

    Again, IMO this is an 'Allen question.'

      I don't think Rich was asking if he should send friend requests to all of us, just tell us we could add him as a friend. Big difference there.

      It's hard to imagine a good objection to someone having a statement in their sig that says "Add me as a friend on Facebook" with a link to their profile. In fact I've seen some doing that. It's really no difference than a link to their site.

      Sean, how could it possibly be spam for Rich to say that it's OK to add him?

      Are we at the point where no communication is allowed?

        I agree with that. I see people with twitter links all the time "follow me on twitter". I don't really see a difference or a problem with having a facebook link in your sig. If people don't want to add you they won't.

        Hey Jelasco,

        personally i do not take issue with it...if someone pm's me a friend request I check them out and decide to acccept or not....unless it is blatant spam like porn etc...

        If it were in a sig file there is most certainly no issue.

        I am with ya as far as the communication thing but unfortunately there are scammers and spammers who provoke threads like this. These people are the ones that make it bad for everyone else....and keep people on edge.

        Reputable forums like this and social networking sites like FaceBook and Linkedin have people who do not like unsolicited mail...and will often times report it as spam....

        I may have misunderstood the thread.

        I was under the impression that he may want to be PMing everyone.

        Another suggestion would be to include that you are a open networker.

          Hey everyone - thanks for replying!!

          Just to make it crystal clear - I was going to post my profile link and say "ADD ME PEOPLE" or something to that effect. After all, "we're all friends here, aren't we"?

          It's quite a long story how I "discovered" it - was out clubbing and some kids from my old school asked me to "add them on Facebook" and I just like "okay, okay"....

          Got home and signed up... now I'm addicted!

          I even found this girl I knew with who left the UK for AUS back in 1998... talk about small world!

          Anyway, thanks for the advice... I guess it's up to Allen if I can put up my link and invite people to add me.

            Well, the most convenient solution is to add your FB link to the left and I actually send out a DM on my twitter asking followers to visit me on FB.

            I got wind they are going to lift the 5,000 limit. Not sure if that happened yet.
