WiFi, VPN - Set me straight.

I've done some research here on the Warrior Forum. I want to make sure I'm thinking correctly.

I want great Internet security when I get on the 'net from an open WiFi source like McDonalds, etc. I want to be comfortable checking my e-mail or logging into my bank or PayPal, etc.

So I'm thinking I need to subscribe to a good VPN service. Preferably with servers in other countries. I have some trips planned in 2012.

Your input, ideas, and experience would be appreciated.

Choosing VPN is the right decision no doubt..But you also need to make sure that you use a secure protocol while connecting via VPN. Do not use PPTP if you want security. L2TP is better but the best of them all is of course SSTP or OpenVPN..so whenever you are connecting to a WiFi, use either L2TP or SSTP/OpenVPN.
As far as the VPN provider suggestion is concerned. I am using PureVPN for some time now and overall their service is good. You should give them a try. HMA and StrongVPN are two other major players of the VPN industry but I haven't used their pro services so I can't really recommend them to you.

    Hi Joe

The VPN is not a bad idea and you've already been offered advice regarding protocols.

Keep in mind however that on some public WiFi access points you may find port-blocking affects your ability to use certain VPN's. It really depends upon the provider.

And of course no VPN will protect you from the other danger of accessing your PayPal and bank account information publicly - the danger of someone literally looking over your shoulder as you type! 3M makes a film that you can place over your notebook or netbook screen, it allows you to see the screen but anyone looking at it from an angle will be blocked. It works great on airplanes too, a consideration now that WiFi is commonly available on longer flights.

    Happy Holidays

Get anonymous encrypted vpn service that is reputable. Often times vpn companies are the ones that have been known to intercept data.

Just make sure you spend a little extra money to ensure you get a good VPN service. You might as well make it worth it

I signed up with Witopia's personal VPN service, the pro package. It is $70 year, but it is a solid service and has run with no problems since I got it a few months ago. I got a choice of 75 different connections spread to choose from spread across different countries/cities. However, you essentially have an endless supply of IP address because each time you connect to one of these connections you got a different IP address.

The only thing is that it doesn't support automatic proxy rotation, which is something I don't use anymore anyhow, but it takes less than a minute to change from one connection to another, so you can go from one country/city to another in a snap - sweeeeeeeeet.
